Chapter 577: Xianglin's Wife

Cynthia's visit to Donovan this time was definitely not as simple as she claimed. Cynthia knew there was a misunderstanding between Chloe and Donovan, and she was eager to make it worse. If she could turn that fake marriage certificate into a real one, it would be perfect!

"Should I come by in the future?" Cynthia asked Donovan.

"I'll call you if I need anything," Donovan replied.

"Okay, I'll be at your beck and call," Cynthia agreed, appearing completely obedient, as if she was delighted to serve Donovan. In reality, she was thinking: 'For now, I'll play along. Once I completely push Chloe out, I'll have won.'

Cynthia needed to lie low and gather her strength.

Outside the New East Group building.

"Chloe, why are you running? Did you forget our agreement?" Victoria's voice called out as they approached the lobby entrance.

Chloe had indeed forgotten about it.

"Oh, I completely forgot," Chloe replied, her smile returning as she spoke to Victoria.

"Let's go, I've already booked a place," Victoria put her arm around Chloe's back as they got into Victoria's car.

Victoria had chosen a rather exquisite restaurant. The two of them sat by the wall, and Chloe inexplicably felt a sense of peace.

Chloe reminded herself: 'Maple Valley is still better. In Maple Valley, everyone is someone I know. Pearl Peak City may have Grandpa's house and his university, but it's not my home.'

"Chloe, I saw your resume from Nicole Winslow. I know you graduated from Emerald Isle Unity College. Not bad. You've been away for a few years without any news," Victoria spoke while eating.

Chloe usually brushed off this topic.

They chatted about some internal company matters.

Victoria rarely talked about personal matters with Chloe, possibly to avoid making Chloe uncomfortable. Chloe's personal matters mostly revolved around Donovan, and it was taboo to gossip about a superior. So, Victoria didn't bring it up, which made Chloe feel more at ease around her.

"By the way, Chloe, you know Ann, right?" Victoria asked.

Chloe paused mid-bite, "Ann? What about her?"

"What do you think of Ann?"

Chloe thought for a moment and replied tactfully, "She's quite straightforward."

"More like overly straightforward, right?" Victoria wrinkled her nose. "Last time we went to a meeting, it was a familiar circle, so everyone knew each other. During lunch, I was sitting there, and I kept hearing Ann complain about James. She wouldn't stop. But I don't blame her. James was our former CFO, and he was indeed annoying. No wonder he ended up in jail."

"Yeah, James's character was indeed a bit lacking," Chloe couldn't help but recall how James always sided with Ellie and tried to pin the "stolen bag" incident on her.

"Also," Victoria leaned closer to Chloe, "someone's been posting negative stuff about our company recently. I suspect it's James. After all, it was Mr. Blake who sent him to jail."

"What are they saying?"

"Just the usual complaints about our company making people work overtime, trading their lives for money. And," Victoria paused, "it's on our company's forum. You should check it out. Anyway, let's not dwell on unpleasant things. Let's talk about something happy."

They chatted casually for a while longer.

After parting ways, Chloe returned to her home at Hudson University.

By coincidence, she ran into James at the school gate. James was standing there, seemingly waiting for someone.
