Chapter 384 Stubbornness
Chloe always kept two cherished photos of Francis on her phone. She fought the urge to ask Maya for more, but she knew Donovan would find even worse ways to torment her if she did. Instead, Chloe focused on her studies. With Dreamscape Day approaching and a school holiday, she stayed home reading, rarely going out or returning home.
Donovan started to wonder if she didn't want to come back or if she simply couldn't. He thought, "Was it because I said, 'If she leaves, she shouldn't come back'? But Francis is here. Doesn't she care? And when has she ever listened to me like this?"
In the past, if Donovan didn't reply to her on WhatsApp, she'd ask Maya about him. But this time, she was completely distant.
Dreamscape Day wasn't a holiday on Aurora Isle, so Donovan called Sofia in. "What happened the night before Chloe went abroad?" he demanded, slamming his lighter on the desk.
Sofia was scared and surprised. 'Why is he asking about this now?' she thought. "Nothing happened," she said, feeling guilty. "Just Carol belittling Chloe, saying we were all undereducated."
"And?" Donovan pressed. "Tell me, and I'll promote you to deputy director and project team leader."
Sofia got excited. "Really?"
"You know connections matter too, not just education. Not everyone is as stubborn as Chloe."
Sofia thought about Chloe not returning since going abroad, Donovan's rumors about Janet, and what he said at Francis's celebration party. She was worried about Chloe. Chloe had once told her something serious had happened and not to tell Donovan. But if it was that serious, maybe Donovan could help.
So, Sofia told Donovan about the man in the black suit. "A business car?" Donovan asked. "What kind?"
"I'll send you a photo," Sofia said, then sent it to him.
"What did she say afterward?" Donovan asked.
"She just said she was going abroad. I didn't expect her to leave the next day. It was so fast."
"Alright," Donovan dismissed Sofia. He sent the photo of the business car to his assistant, asking them to find out who owned it.
Janet didn't just appear out of nowhere. First, her car broke down. Then, she went to the hillside villa with Jacob, calling him "brother". Donovan suspected her calling him "brother" wasn't just for show. Later, she said she and Jacob weren't a couple, but they made entertainment news headlines together. None of this was a coincidence. There was a big conspiracy behind it.
But what exactly was it?
He also asked his assistant to check Janet's recent call records. Recently, Barbara's luck had turned around, and she was doing well. All of this was connected.
