Chapter 186 My Throat Suddenly Went Hoarse

Chloe's head was spinning, and finally, she collapsed in Amelia's arms and burst into tears.

"Chloe, don't cry. Between us, nothing has really changed, okay?" Amelia said.

Chloe remembered when she was young, Jacob always bullied her, while Amelia only bought sweets for Chloe and chased Jacob with a broom; in elementary school, Amelia hand-washed Chloe's clothes every day, but when Jacob went to high school, he would just throw his clothes in the basin when he came home and wash them himself, which made Jacob hate her; every time Chloe scored well on exams and received praise from others if Jacob happened to do well once, Amelia would think he had copied someone else.

Jacob's failed life had a lot to do with the comparison to Chloe's.

Chloe felt like she had taken Jacob's parents away and suddenly felt very sorry for Jacob.

"Mom, I'm going to bed," Chloe said to Amelia before returning to her own bedroom.

She didn't turn on the bedroom light, lying in bed, letting tears flow endlessly.

She used to think that as long as her mom was there, home was there, even if they were poor, she would make sure her mom's illness was taken care of.

Now, she didn't regret everything she had done for her mom, but she wasn't Chloe's real mom, and she couldn't help but think how great it would be if she were her real mom!

Why was life so unfair?

Chloe heard a knock on the door, and Amelia went to answer it.

"Donovan, you're here?" Amelia said.

"Yes, where is she?"

"Chloe went to her room to sleep."

"So early?"

Amelia didn't say anything, just sighed.

The door to Chloe's room wasn't locked, and Donovan pushed it open.

The light in the living room allowed Chloe to see his tall figure.

As he took off his coat, he reached for the switch.

"Don't turn on the light," Chloe said hoarsely.

Donovan hesitated for a moment, then closed the door to her room, leaving the room pitch black.

Chloe heard the rustling as he undressed, the sound of him washing up in the bathroom and getting into bed.

When he hugged Chloe around the waist, she was almost asleep.

"Don't you miss me?" his lips landed on Chloe's forehead, his voice low, ambiguous, and full of hormones.

"I don't miss you." Chloe's voice was already hoarse.

"Why is your throat hoarse if you don't miss me?"

"So I don't feel like talking."

Just as Donovan was about to press down on Chloe, she murmured, "Don't, not tonight."

Feeling like a rootless duckweed in this world, not knowing where her parents were, Chloe felt very sad.

She clung tightly to Donovan's neck and burst into tears.

Although Donovan didn't understand why, he knew she loved to cry and thought to himself, ‘it must be some little girl's matter.’

When he woke up the next morning, Chloe was still asleep, her eyes swollen.

His heart inexplicably ached for a moment.

Chloe got up to eat, and Amelia handed her an egg, rubbing Chloe's eyes.

"Look at how swollen your eyes are. Let Mom rub them for you, Chloe. Stop crying." Amelia said to Chloe.

She knew Chloe was upset about knowing this matter.

"Matthew's investment company is going to audit your department. Will you participate in this project?" Donovan asked Chloe.

Chloe nodded.

The name Matthew sounded familiar, but she couldn't remember who he was.

She needed to keep herself busy so she wouldn't have time to overthink things.

"After you go to the company, apply to Victoria," Donovan said.

"What if I can't get approved?"

Chloe knew her role as an assistant might not be enough; usually, audits like this required certified auditors.

"Don't you still have me?"

Chloe's heart warmed, and she nodded, saying, "Okay."

When it was time to go to work, Chloe said to Amelia, "Mom, I'm leaving."

A very ordinary "I'm leaving." In the past, Chloe would have said it with happiness, knowing that this home was her forever home, but this time it was different from usual.

When she arrived at the company, Chloe began to write in her diary before the official start of work.

Today, she didn't draw a solid pentagon after finishing her diary entry, which was very rare.

She didn't write anything negative about Donovan either.

She recorded in her diary all the detailed words her mom said yesterday, knowing that Donovan never read her diary.

After Victoria arrived at work, she was summoned to the office by Mario.

Chloe knew it was probably about the matter with Matthew's company.
