Chapter 274 Chloe was Pregnant with Donovan's Child
Paisley slapped Barbara hard across the face with a resounding "smack."
Paisley had recently harbored a grudge against Barbara for not being content with her current situation. Barbara, who was supposed to be her assistant, had always dreamed of acting. This was absurd, considering Barbara had no talent, no formal training, and no connections. Yet, she still didn't want to be an assistant and aspired to act.
The slap was quite satisfying for Paisley.
"Is this what you got when I asked you to borrow a high-end dress?" Paisley pointed to a hole in the dress.
Paisley was furious about Barbara's constant attempts to land acting gigs. This slap was partly an outlet for her accumulated frustrations.
Barbara felt humiliated but couldn’t afford to retaliate.
"Are you still committed to being my assistant? If not, I can let you go," Paisley said.
Barbara had angered her once again.
"I want to stay," Barbara replied. She was extremely patient and determined to achieve her goals. If she could appease Paisley, there might be opportunities for acting in the future. But if she failed to do so, Paisley could easily end her career and leave her jobless.
So, she had to endure working as Paisley's assistant.
Moreover, the producers of the film "The Aristocrats" were currently in talks with Barbara.
Paisley, despite her much higher status and being a top-tier star, had not received any offers.
Barbara had no demands regarding the size of her role; she just wanted to appear in "The Aristocrats." Doing so would earn her recognition in the acting community.
Barbara dreamed of instant success. Being an assistant for life was unpromising, but acting offered the potential for overnight fame.
Actors nationwide were eyeing this film because it was a major production, and more importantly, the producer was Pamela Adams.
Pamela, born into a scholarly family, was naturally beautiful and exuded an air of nobility. She became a nationwide sensation at the age of 23 but disappeared at the peak of her career to start "Pamela Film Company," one of the top film companies in the country. They produced only one or two films a year, but each one was a massive hit.
Paisley was anxious about this matter.
"Even if you succeed in auditioning for 'The Aristocrats,' you'll just be a minor character," Paisley said harshly. "And if you go, you can forget about being my assistant!"
Barbara remained silent.
Recently, Barbara's mother, Betty, had asked how she was doing in Maple Valley. If things were going well, she and Daniel were considering moving to Maple Valley. Sunshine Bay City was a small place with many people leaving for work elsewhere, and the county was becoming increasingly desolate.
Ever since Barbara had played a supporting role in a film, Betty had been bragging to everyone that her daughter was going to be a big star.
People would say, "Oh, your daughter is going to be a big star. Are you moving to Maple Valley, too?"
Moving to Maple Valley had become a burden on Betty's mind, weighing heavily on Barbara.
Barbara desperately wanted to act in "The Aristocrats." If she succeeded in the audition, she would quit working for Paisley. But for now, she hadn't succeeded yet, so she had to continue dealing with Paisley.
"Chloe is pregnant with Donovan's child!" Barbara suddenly said.
Paisley frowned slightly. Why did Barbara always say things she didn't want to hear?
She slapped Barbara again.
"Do you have to cause trouble?"
"No, I saw Chloe yesterday. She was in a BMW, taking Sofia back to her dormitory. Chloe’s belly was very big. I got curious and had a taxi follow her. She went back to Serenity Springs Estates, and I saw Donovan’s car there too. Given Donovan's status, he wouldn’t support a child that wasn’t his. The BMW probably wasn’t Chloe’s either; Donovan must have given it to her. If Chloe were pregnant with Brayden’s child, Donovan wouldn’t be so generous. I remember Chloe telling me when we were kids that she wanted to 'marry only one person for life.' She wouldn’t be pregnant with another man’s child while still married. Barbara's arguments were logical, making Paisley’s eyes widen in disbelief.
