Chapter 448 You Certainly Won't Be Left Out
"And what?" Donovan asked Chloe.
"And she wants me to go too," Chloe replied.
"Are you going?" Donovan asked her directly.
"It depends on the time. I have classes and need to write papers. Besides, it's going to be you two old classmates catching up. What would I do there?" Chloe replied.
"Are you not going? So you turned her down."
Chloe was silent.
She thought to herself, 'Why do both of them want me to go?'
"I'm not that important. Why do you insist on me going?" Chloe said.
"Of course, you can't be left out," Donovan said casually.
"Then I..." Chloe checked her schedule on her phone. "How about tomorrow night? Are you going back to Maple Valley?"
"No. I just signed a contract and need to inspect the project," he said.
Chloe slowly nodded. "Is 6:30PM okay? Should I tell her?"
Donovan didn't respond, signifying his agreement.
Donovan knew Cynthia very well. She had harbored a crush on him for many years. Even the most subtle crush would be noticed if it lasted long enough.
A few years ago, when Donovan married Chloe, Cynthia's unrequited love became a source of ridicule, making her the subject of gossip. Despite her PhD and academic achievements, she felt deeply humiliated. In her despair, she married a man who seemed more interested in her credentials than in her.
They got married, but he had a girl he truly liked. That girl went to teach in a poor area, and the man told Cynthia he was going there to teach, but in reality, he went to see his first love.
Later, the man passed away under scandalous circumstances. Rumor had it that he died in a cave while having an affair with his first love, the result of overindulgence. Since he was a teacher, to protect his reputation, the cause of death was not made public.
Though Cynthia lost her husband, being a widow was still preferable to the humiliation of a lifelong unrequited love, especially with Donovan married while she remained single.
To save face, Cynthia began telling everyone that she no longer had feelings for Donovan and that she had genuinely loved her late husband.
Donovan, however, remained wary of Cynthia. He always found her thoughts disturbingly twisted, making him uneasy around her.
Yet, this time, it was Chloe who invited him.
Donovan first dropped Chloe off at school, and then he went back home.
Chloe thought Barbara's car might be not far behind. Jeffery had said he would "find her at school," and it would be troublesome if he really came. So, she quickened her pace and went back to her home in Willow Grove Estates.
She had always wanted to know what the relationship between Jeffery and Donovan was, but in the end, Donovan never told her.
When Donovan got home, Francis had just fallen asleep.
"Why did you let him sleep at this hour? What if he's up all night?" Donovan asked Charles with a frown.
"He got tired of playing with the water gun. Besides, whether he sleeps at night is your problem, not mine," Charles replied nonchalantly.
Donovan was silent.
Charles saw Donovan's speechless expression and was quite pleased.
"Did you sign the contract?" Charles asked.
Donovan sat on the sofa, found a comfortable position, and tossed his briefcase to Charles. "Yes, I signed it. I’ll inspect the project soon."
Charles raised an eyebrow, teasing, "That’s supposed to be the job of the Commerce, Finance, and Legal departments. You’re doing everything yourself. Why bother having so many people? Signing the contract wasn’t your job, and neither is the inspection. What’s keeping you in Pearl Peak City? Feeling nostalgic?"
"Get lost."
"Fine, be nostalgic all you want, but don’t drag me into it. You’ve turned me into a babysitter. Do you think that’s easy for me? I’m a PhD from Evergreen University, for crying out loud," Charles complained.
"If you don't want the job, you can leave," Donovan said unhappily.
Charles stood there. "I must be a masochist."
Ignoring him, Donovan stood up to go to the bedroom.
"I sent you today's photos of Francis," Charles called after him. As Donovan shut the bedroom door, he heard his phone ping with a few WhatsApp notifications.
