Chapter 154 Do You Have a Partner?
During the New Year period, public transportation companies did not take a break. Daniel still had to work, leaving Betty at home.
When Betty saw Chloe and Amelia, she also had an indifferent expression.
Chloe was very unhappy; after all, her mother had been lying in bed for six years. Their emotions were genuine; when Grandma saw Amelia, the mother and daughter burst into tears.
Betty gave Grandma a cold look, and the meaning in her eyes was clear to Chloe: 'Say what needs to be said, and don't say what shouldn't be said.'
Grandma relied on Daniel and Betty to get by, and she was very afraid of Betty, so she could only cry softly. When Amelia saw sores on her mother's back and the bedding was all dirty, she choked out, "Mom, let me wash the bedding for you."
Knowing that her mom had difficulty moving, Chloe carried all the bedding to the laundry room. Just as she was about to put them in the washing machine, Betty stared at Chloe with a strange look, "Are you going to wash them in the washing machine?"
"Isn't that how you wash them?"
"Her bedding is very dirty..." After saying that, Betty took out a basin. "Use this basin."
To prevent Grandma from being further distressed, Chloe had no choice but to wash them by hand. She spent the whole morning washing, and Daniel was reluctant to turn on the heating, so the house was cold.
Her hands were red from the cold, and she almost got frostbite.
At noon, Betty cooked three dishes for Chloe and Amelia.
"Chloe, are you working?" Betty asked Chloe sarcastically.
"Yes," Chloe replied.
"What kind of work do you do?" Barbara asked again.
"I'm just an ordinary accountant in a regular company," Chloe replied calmly, recalling what her mother had said.
Betty smiled smugly. "Our Barbara is now working at the largest paper mill in the county."
"That's great," Chloe said.
Barbara sensed insincerity in Chloe's tone and said, "In a few days, I will be working at New East Group, the largest conglomerate in Maple Valley."
Chloe's hand paused as she was eating. She was going to work at New East Group? She didn't much about job opportunities there.
Seeing Chloe's stunned expression, Barbara felt even more pleased. "Surprised, aren't you? I heard that financial positions pay around four to five thousand a month. Sales, on the other hand, offer commissions."
Barbara continued, "Yes, sales bring in the big bucks. By the way, do you have a partner?"
They say marriage is a woman's second life. Chloe hadn't had a good life herself, so if she married a wealthy man, she would be outdone. It would be best for her to find a man similar to her own family background, someone who relied on her for a living.
"I'm married," Chloe said, having finished her pasta. The food Betty made was hard to swallow, so she only ate a little.
Upon hearing this, Barbara thought to herself, 'Chloe is married?'
"What does your husband do?" Barbara asked nervously.
"He's just an ordinary person who runs a small company. It's barely enough to cover expenses," Amelia replied succinctly, not wanting to upset Betty.
Barbara suspiciously eyed Chloe and glanced at her clothes. Barbara was not knowledgeable about these things; she thought Chloe's clothes were simple and not worth much. With that thought, Barbara felt reassured. If Chloe's husband was wealthy, he would surely accompany Chloe to show off. Since he didn't come, he must lack confidence.
"Betty, I want to stay over with Mom tonight, is that okay?" Amelia asked Betty.
"I don't see the harm, but our house is so small, the three of you will have to squeeze in," Betty said with a sideways glance.
If Amelia's family were wealthy, her attitude would be different. Unfortunately, after being ill for six years and being extremely poor, even the son-in-law didn't dare take his daughter back to Grandma's house. They were probably so poor that they couldn't even afford an extra blanket to sleep with.
Hearing Aunt Betty's words, Chloe felt a surge of anger but held back. Grandma's bed was only one and a half meters wide. Two people would find it cramped, let alone three.
Betty didn't suggest that Chloe and Barbara share a room, and Barbara didn't express any opinion about it either.
" Chloe can stay in a hotel; her friends are waiting," Amelia said.
'Friends? What friends?' Barbara thought to herself. Just now, Chloe mentioned she was married; could it be her husband?
"Just friends from work," Chloe replied casually.
Betty thought to herself, 'Tonight, I must follow her!' Maybe her husband was waiting outside!
At six o'clock in the evening, Daniel came back. He was somewhat warm toward Amelia, but that was it.
At seven o'clock, Chloe had Sofia send her the location of the hotel so she could go there. Sofia had booked a budget hotel very close to Grandma's house.
After Chloe left, Barbara followed her.
