Chapter 682 Adopting a Child

The two people walking over were Brayden and Carol.

Ever since they got married, they hadn't been able to have children. After getting checked, it turned out to be Carol's issue. She was very anxious about it.

Maria, who was religious and held traditional views, believed that a woman's duty was to have children. If a woman couldn't have children, no amount of money would make up for it.

Carol was already very career-oriented, which made Maria increasingly displeased with her. Her words became unfriendly. Moreover, since it wasn't Brayden who was infertile but Carol, Maria felt even more indignant. Brayden could have children, so why should the Perez family end with Carol's infertility?

In the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship, Brayden didn't help Carol, making her feel increasingly isolated. However, besides Brayden, she couldn't find another man as compliant as him in the entire Maple Valley. So, she absolutely couldn't get a divorce.

Even if she divorced and found someone else, she still wouldn't be able to have children. Not having children was a grave sin for a woman, and she might end up being kicked out.

As a result, the relationship between Maria and Carol had been deteriorating.

Not being able to have children put a lot of pressure on Carol.

Regal County was a very remote and poor place. Carol had the idea of adopting a child from there. Brayden had no objections. He had already lost in the matter of finding a partner, so he didn't care whose child it was.

They didn't want to adopt a very young child. Carol hated the crying and fussing of small children and also disliked older children. Older children had memories, and if they didn't raise them well, they would end up raising someone else's child. She wanted to adopt a child around two or three years old.

Maria had asked Brayden for his opinion. Brayden's stance was that as long as Carol didn't divorce him, he wouldn't divorce her. He didn't have big ambitions in this life. In his eyes, except for Chloe, it didn't matter whom he married.

Maria was unsettled. She even thought about having Brayden find a mistress to have a child with and pay that woman, but Brayden refused. He didn't want to do such a thing for the sake of having descendants. Maria was also at her wit's end.

Carol was quite touched by Brayden's decision. She certainly didn't want Brayden to have a child with another woman. First, the child wouldn't be hers. If the child came, Maria would take care of it, and it would have nothing to do with her. Moreover, another woman's child would be inclined towards their biological mother and would take away a significant portion of the inheritance in the future. Brayden would also definitely protect that child. So, Carol preferred to choose a child with no background, whom she could educate and keep away from Maria.

However, this time in Regal County, they hadn't found a child worth adopting. In Carol's eyes, these children were either too ignorant or didn't meet her standards. She was probably already quite averse to adopting a child, so she didn't like any of them.

From a distance, they saw Chloe and her family.

Carol walked over and looked at the two children throwing stones into the water.

"Doesn't Chloe have only one child? Why are there two now? Adopted?" Carol sneered at Chloe.

Seeing Chloe again, Brayden couldn't take his eyes off her. She had become even more beautiful over time.

"No," Chloe said, clearly disliking Carol.

"You two didn't come to Regal County to donate money, did you?" Donovan, seeing Brayden staring at Chloe, stepped slightly in front of her to block her from view. His tone was not friendly either.

Donovan's action made Brayden realize how inappropriate he had been.

Carol used to be afraid of Donovan, but now, years later, she wasn't as scared anymore.

"Of course not!" Carol couldn't let them know she was there to adopt a child.
