Chapter 59 You've Been Driving Me Crazy

Chloe had intended to spend the night in her dorm, but now she found herself in a bind. She'd leaked the news of her marriage, breaching the contract, which meant not only was the five-million-dollar payout in jeopardy, but she might also have to repay what she'd already earned.

Her only recourse was to apologize to Donovan.

When Donovan approached his car, he found Chloe waiting by the vehicle. He paused and asked, "What's this about, Chloe?"

"Mr. Blake, I spent last night in my mother's hospital room," Chloe said, the corners of her mouth being forced up in a rigid smile. "The nurse was overrun, and as a daughter, I had to fulfill my duties, right?"

"And so?" Donovan asked as he casually took out a cigarette and leaned against his car door.

"I didn't want Grandpa to worry, so I came to go home with you now."

"And when did Blake's family become some sort of hotel? What am I to you? Some kind of place you can come and go to, please, without a word?"

Even with a thousand retorts at the ready in the past, this time, Chloe had no ground to stand on. She'd broken the agreement, possibly incurring a significant loss, especially since Donovan held all interpretational power over that agreement.

She looked down at her feet, staying silent, her demeanor pitiful.

Donovan took a drag from his cigarette, his gaze falling on her. "Returning like this makes everything seem like child's play. You should at least make a vow like you can't leave again without giving notice."

Chloe thought for a moment, then raised her hand solemnly. "I swear, if I ever think about leaving Blake's family again, I must notify Mr. Blake in advance and get his permission before I leave."

"There's more," Donovan stated.

Chloe, surprised, asked, "What else?"

"Don't go around flirting with other men."

"I haven't flirted," Chloe responded defensively, her urgency rising. Was he really serious about using such a harsh term?

Donovan put out his cigarette, tossing it to the ground, and turned to enter his car. This was his non-verbal cue to end the conversation.

"Mr. Blake, Mr. Blake." Chloe hurried forward, blocking his path, "I swear, I won't flirt with other men."

As Chloe mouthed the word "flirt," she felt it was beneath her, but she had no choice.
"Get in." Chloe finally let out a sigh of relief.

"Where's the marriage certificate? You're not planning to give it back to me?" Donovan asked Chloe.

"The marriage certificate? It's in my dorm room."

Donovan pulled out his cell phone and made a call to the Human Resources Director, Winslow, asking him to clear out Chloe's room, 1507, and make arrangements for a newcomer to move in.

As soon as Chloe heard that, she panicked. It seemed that just when she thought she'd outsmarted him by taking out the marriage certificate, she was losing her dorm room.

Donovan didn't seem too bothered by everyone knowing he was married. He was going with the flow.

"Yes, she's married now, she won't need the dorm room anymore," Donovan continued on the phone with the HR Director, "You don't have to call her separately, she's in my car. I'll go with her to pack her things."

Once he hung up, he turned to Chloe and said, "They're assigning the dorm room to a newcomer. Go get your things."

Chloe's face was an indescribable mix of amusement and despair.

The car left the parking lot and stopped across from the company dormitory.

Frustrated, Chloe runs to her own dorm room.

When Sofia saw Chloe returning, she asked anxiously, "Did he give you a hard time?"

Frowning, Chloe stuffed all her things into a suitcase and said in disappointment, "I've lost the dorm room. He's making me move out, and you're going to have a new roommate."

Sofia flopped down onto the bed, cursing herself for sending the wrong message today. The new person coming in was a mystery, and she had no idea if they would get along well.

"I always said, you shouldn't have rocked the boat with him, it never does any good," Sofia said.

Chloe could relate but didn't say anything.

Back at the villa on the hillside, Chloe returned to her room to do her homework.

Donovan leaned against the headboard, reading a book. Chloe had a question she couldn't solve, so she approached him, carrying her book.

"Mr. Blake, I don't understand this problem. Can you explain it?" Chloe walked over to Donovan, bent down, and prepared herself to learn attentively.

"How do you manage a public relations crisis? Haven't I covered this already? You weren't sleeping in class, so why don't you get it?" Donovan frowned slightly at Chloe.

The light from behind cast her in silhouette, her cheeks flushed red and her ears translucent in the glow.
She licked her lips nervously, not daring to look at Donovan as she seemingly focused intently on the book. "So, go ahead and explain it to me."

"What will you give me in return?" Donovan's gaze was fixed unabashedly on her face.

"Um... What do you want?" Chloe suppressed the irritation inside her.

"Take good care of me tonight. You've been giving me a tough time these past few days."

Chloe was at a loss for words.

After a while, she licked her lips and relented, "Okay."

Satisfied with her response, Donovan proceeded to explain in detail.
