Chapter 701 Does He Really Have to Be Like This?
Matthew finished writing the check and handed it to Betty. "Here's five million dollars, just like Barbara asked for. She can pay it back if she wants, or not. If she has the money, she can return it; if not, no pressure."
Barbara felt like slapping herself. Great, now she was in his hands.
As soon as Matthew left, Betty tapped Barbara on the head. "Mr. Parker gave you such a large sum of money. What are you going to do about it?"
"I'll return the money another day."
"Return it? Do you think Mr. Parker, being so shrewd, will let you return it? What are you thinking? Are you out of your mind? That Jeffery, he probably won't be able to come up with that much money in his lifetime!" Betty said.
Barbara felt even more worried. Matthew was extremely shrewd, and he didn't genuinely like her. She was slowly falling into his trap. What would she do in the future? She was definitely no match for him.
Thinking of this, Barbara broke out in a cold sweat.
After leaving Barbara's house, Matthew went to Donovan's place.
On the way, he had already called Donovan, who said he would be home after work.
"Long time no see," Matthew said as soon as he arrived at Donovan's house.
"What brings you here?" Donovan asked, lounging on his sofa.
"I missed you, so I came."
Donovan, knowing better, asked, "What's the matter?"
Matthew, looking as if Donovan had seen right through him, said, "Actually, there is something. This afternoon, Mrs. Blake went out with a young guy. Did you know that?"
"A young guy?" Donovan frowned slightly. "What were they doing?"
He guessed the young guy might be Jeffery.
"I don't know. They came out of the Celestial Peak Building, and Barbara immediately hugged the guy. It made me very curious," Matthew added.
Donovan was even more convinced it was Jeffery.
Maya happened to come out of the kitchen and overheard Matthew and Donovan's conversation. She was startled and thought, 'Why is my intuition so bad? Could it be Jeffery? But isn't Jeffery supposed to be in the military now? How did he end up at the Celestial Peak Building? Although Maya didn't know where the Celestial Peak Building was, it was probably in the city.'
So, she stood inside her room, continuing to listen. She couldn't hear clearly, but she got the gist.
"What are you thinking? Of all people, why Barbara? She has character issues," Donovan said.
But Matthew clearly didn't take Donovan's words to heart. Matters of love were his own business; no need to heed others' advice.
"Mrs. Blake came out with that young guy, and you have no opinion on that?" Matthew casually shifted the conflict back to Donovan.
Although Donovan was annoyed, he didn't show it, except for a trace of displeasure in his eyes. "That was her former student. Why should I be jealous?"
Maya, hearing this, thought: A student? It sounds more and more like Jeffery.
Matthew knowingly smiled. "I hope you can truly be as indifferent as you say, Mr. Blake."
Just then, Chloe came back, and Matthew asked her, "Do you know who that young guy was today?"
Chloe, surprised to see Matthew at their house, frowned slightly and asked, "Where's Maya?"
Chloe's question confirmed Maya's suspicions. Why would she ask about Maya out of the blue? It must be about Jeffery. What happened to Jeffery? Why are they hiding it from her?
A mother's heart was both sensitive and worried.
"Probably in the backyard," Donovan said, squinting at Chloe. He was very displeased with Chloe for privately arranging a job for Jeffery today.
After all, Chloe and Jeffery had a history, and his old jealousy flared up again.
"I got him a job at Ann's firm. He starts tomorrow," Chloe said quietly, afraid Maya would hear. She never mentioned Jeffery's name.
"Chloe, since this guy was your student, why don't you set him up with someone else? Let Barbara be with me and keep your classmate away," Matthew said to Chloe.
"I have another classmate who really likes my student. He and Barbara are not suitable at all. Besides, my student doesn't like Barbara at all," Chloe said.
However, Chloe didn't express her opinion on Barbara and Matthew's relationship. First, she didn't know who was more capable. She hoped to see Barbara lose, but what if the two got along well? Barbara's character didn't deserve it. Second, if Barbara ended up manipulating Matthew, she wouldn't want to see that either. After all, Donovan had once said, "Matthew treats her well."
"I can guarantee my student won't bother Barbara. As for you and Barbara, do whatever you want," Chloe said.
"I saw you coming out of Barbara's house the other day. How do you know her?" Matthew asked again.
Chloe thought for a moment, her hand on her knee. "She's my cousin."
Matthew clearly didn't believe it. "Your cousin? You two are cousins?"
Chloe felt a bit awkward. After all, they were relatives, yet they seemed so distant, making a joke of themselves in front of Matthew.
She looked up at Donovan, who was staring at her with disbelief.
Chloe was startled; She just got Jeffery a job without telling him, and he's acting like this?
