Chapter 279 Someone Like Karen Doesn't Deserve Children
In the afternoon, after wrapping up a yoga session, Chloe messaged Susan on WhatsApp to let her know she was on her way home. However, upon reaching the lobby, Chloe suddenly needed to use the restroom.
The first floor was less crowded, and the restroom there was smaller and less frequently used than those on other floors. After using the restroom, as Chloe was about to exit, she overheard two voices outside.
"Did you hear? Chloe came to the company."
"Yes, I did. She came while pregnant."
"Her mother's death was tragic, and everyone is aware that it wasn't an accident. Despite this, she went on to marry Mr. Blake. She even moved in with him and had two children with him! I just can't understand what was going through her mind. It's almost like she no longer cares about her family."
"If you had the chance to rise to the top like that, you'd have more children to secure your position too."
"But whose children are they really? Rumor said they're Brayden's."
"Are you dumb? If those were Brayden's kids, Mr. Blake wouldn't have brought her to the company. Plus, the HR department has set her up to start. She's even on paid maternity leave at the moment."
"Compared to Chloe, they must be fuming."
The voices slowly faded, and Chloe couldn't hear them anymore. Normally, she wouldn't pay attention to gossip like that. But the mention of Amelia's death hit her hard, making her heart ache.
Chloe also thought to herself, ‘I've been neglecting Amelia's death, closing myself off, and being too cold towards her.’ As Chloe left the restroom, Susan happened to call her. Spotting Susan in the lobby, Chloe waved, and Susan ended the call.
On her way back, Chloe couldn't stop thinking about Amelia. Since Amelia's passing, she had grown more mature, no longer the same person she was before. When Amelia was alive, Chloe was just a child. Now, things were different.
That evening, Chloe excused herself, saying she was tired, and went to her room early to rest, locking the door.
When Donovan came home, she heard him but didn't respond. He knocked on her door, and she said she was tired and wanted to rest, asking Donovan to sleep in his own room for the next few days.
This time, Donovan didn't kick Chloe's door.
The next day, Donovan left before Chloe woke up, and this became a pattern for several days. Donovan observed Chloe's peculiar behavior and sensed that she was dealing with some inner turmoil, so he gave her space.
After three days, Maria still hadn't shown up. It became evident that she wasn't interested in Chloe but was attempting to take custody of Chloe's two sons.
Donovan called Dylan, advising him to keep his wife Maria in check and not to trust everything she said.
Dylan, who was very afraid of Donovan, naturally complied. Moreover, Dylan blamed everything on Jacob, saying that Jacob instigated everything Maria did.
"Jacob?" Donovan suspected that someone must have influenced this situation; otherwise, Maria wouldn't have suddenly changed her mind.
"Yes, Mr. Blake, it has nothing to do with my wife. She was just misled by Jacob." Dylan shifted all the blame onto Jacob.
He was indeed quite good to Maria.
Donovan then called Jacob.
Donovan had a feeling that someone must have influenced the situation; otherwise, Maria wouldn't have changed her mind so suddenly.
"Do you know where Karen went?" Donovan's first question to Jacob.
"No! Donovan, don't try to deceive me; I don't believe you!" Jacob replied.
"Don't believe me? How about I have someone take a few photos of her for you?" Donovan's tone was both confident and intimidating to Jacob.
Donovan was much more dangerous than Brayden. Soon, Donovan sent a few photos. Karen was embracing a man who seemed to be in his forties and looked wealthy.
"Her child wasn't yours. I took care of it for you; you should be grateful," Donovan said.
"Donovan, you always know whose children belong to others. Why can't you figure out who Chloe's children are?" Jacob shot back with sarcasm and anger. If Karen's child really wasn't his, he was furious about being misled by Karen for so long. Thankfully, he hadn't handed over the money Donovan had given him; otherwise, he would be in debt now.
"The children are mine; I don't need to think about it," Donovan replied calmly, as if Jacob's question was utterly ridiculous.
"What do you want?" Jacob asked.
"Do something for me," Donovan said.
"What is it?"
"I want to know who sent you to find Maria."
"It was Barbara. Are you happy now? Inviting Barbara to Maple Valley was like welcoming trouble with open arms."
Donovan ended the call, thinking about the situation. If Barbara was involved, Paisley was probably not far behind.
Since Amelia's incident, he had always doubted that Gordon could have been the one to harm her.
Even though Gordon had mistaken Amelia for someone else before, how could he have known she was specifically at BlueOcean Estate Group?
Moreover, Gordon's mind had been severely agitated that day.
Donovan was pretty sure that Gordon had been provoked by someone on the inside, most likely Karen.
Realizing her big mistake, Karen had run off to another city, and Donovan's team was still keeping an eye on her.
As for Karen's child, Donovan had made sure that it was looked after.
He wasn't sure if the child was Jacob's, and he didn't really care. But someone like Karen didn't deserve to be a parent!
