Chapter 470 Where Does My Dad Read?
It was a Friday, and Chloe had no classes, so she stayed at home to do research and write her paper.
Upon hearing a knock at the door, Chloe went to answer it.
"Francis?" Seeing Francis, Chloe was both surprised and delighted.
As soon as Francis saw Chloe, he snuggled up to her. He looked at Chloe with a hint of longing, and Chloe looked at Francis with deep affection in her eyes.
She squatted down and touched her forehead to Francis's. Tears welled up in her eyes, but Chloe fought to hold them back.
She didn't feel much longing during the three years she hadn't seen Francis, but now that she saw him again, she couldn't let go of him. So, when Donovan asked her to look after Francis, despite her reservations, she agreed.
"Francis, where's your dad?" Chloe asked.
Chloe was very afraid of Francis appearing in a blind spot where neither of them could see him.
"Dad dropped me off at the stairwell and then went down," Francis said.
"Okay." Chloe glanced at the stairs, but there was no sign of Donovan.
Donovan probably feared that if he stayed, she would refuse to take care of Francis, so he left Francis and departed right away.
Once inside, Francis noticed the large bookshelf in Chloe's home.
"Francis, do you want something to eat? Or maybe read a book?" After all, Chloe had never taken care of a child and didn't know how to keep them entertained.
"Wow, Chloe, you must be super rich to have so many books," Francis exclaimed.
Chloe smiled. "Yeah. Does your dad still read a lot?"
Francis tilted his head and asked, "You know dad loves to read?"
Chloe felt a bit awkward and said, "I know a little bit."
"Dad still often sits on the couch reading. I don't know if he reads in bed because I don't sleep in the same bed with him. Chloe, where does dad love to read?"
Caught off guard, Chloe stammered, "You..." She hadn’t expected to be questioned by a child.
"Of course, I meant your dad loves reading on the couch," Chloe said.
"Oh, yeah, he loves it." Francis seemed a bit disappointed.
"Francis, feel free to grab any book you want. If you can't reach it, ask me for help. Also, do you want something to eat?" Chloe assumed kids loved snacks and tried to play the "mom" role well, making up for the three years she had missed out on being a mom.
"Well. Chloe, I want to eat egg tarts, but dad never makes them for me. He also doesn't let the housekeeper make them for me, saying they're too high in calories and not good for kids," Francis said, feeling wronged. "Can you make them?"
"Egg tarts are easy; I can make them. Your dad is too strict with you," Chloe said as she checked the fridge.
However, there were no eggs or tart shells, because she usually ate out.
These two things were available at the campus supermarket. She thought about taking Francis out with her to buy them, but most people on campus knew her, and it would be awkward to be seen walking around with Donovan's child. It would undoubtedly stir up gossip and cause trouble.
She sent Isabel a WhatsApp message: [Are you available this afternoon? If not, could you help me buy some tart shells and eggs from the supermarket?]
Isabel: [Sure, Ms. Baker. Who are you making egg tarts for?]
Chloe: [A little kid.]
Chloe took a book and sat on the couch to read to Francis. Listening to Francis's gentle breathing and looking at his innocent face, she thought, 'I really, really like Francis.'
She couldn't help but stroke Francis gently and continued reading.
After a while, the doorbell rang again, and Chloe thought Isabel had arrived. She said to Francis, "I'll get it."
"Okay." Francis nodded.
When she opened the door, Chloe was startled to find Daniel standing there, her voice filled with surprise as she said, "Daniel?"
