Chapter 225 Spending the Last Three Months with Kenneth
Chloe and Kenneth had a lengthy conversation. Kenneth didn't want Chloe to go, but he didn't voice his desire.
Around eight-thirty, Kenneth accompanied Chloe back to her room, holding her hand the entire way.
Despite being an older adult, he appeared childlike. Chloe, who had always seen him as serious, now saw a different side of him that resembled a child.
Kenneth's reluctance to see Chloe go made him seem vulnerable and childlike, causing Chloe to feel conflicted and somewhat guilty.
Coming out of Kenneth's room, Chloe saw Donovan still sitting on the sofa.
"Come here," he said to Chloe.
Then he went upstairs on his own.
Chloe suspected that he might be retrieving the divorce papers for himself, prompting her to follow him upstairs. Much to her astonishment, when they arrived in the bedroom, Donovan was seated on the sofa, smoking.
"Kenneth has at most three months left. Think about whether you want to accompany him," he said, looking at Chloe.
Donovan was her enemy, but Kenneth wasn't, so Chloe remained silent.
"This is the divorce agreement. I've signed it. Take a look," Donovan said, handing a stack of documents to Chloe.
"It's not a divorce certificate?" Chloe's eyes flared up.
"I don't want any surprises in Kenneth's final three months. After pretending for so long, you wouldn't want to give up now, would you?" Donovan remarked.
Chloe found herself in a difficult situation as divorce would impact both her and her partner.
If he objected, she would have no say in the matter. Adding to her distress, Donovan accused her of pretending in her past relationships.
As she reviewed the terms, she saw that by accompanying Kenneth for his final three months, she would be rewarded with two million dollars and two houses in Maple Valley at the end of the period.
It was a significant amount of money.
Two million dollars—an amount Chloe likely wouldn't have made even if she had been working since the last century.
At present, she was focused on her studies and not earning any income, depending entirely on the eight million dollars Donovan had given her. However, she had no desire for this money.
"I cheated first, so I don't deserve this much money," she said, putting the agreement down.
"You know you cheated!" Donovan stared at Chloe intensely, his gaze cold and seemingly capable of killing.
"So, since you know I cheated, why are you giving me so much money? I shouldn't be getting any," Chloe retorted.
Her chest heaved as she spoke, revealing the unsettling truth that Donovan had given her a large sum of money because he was responsible for Amelia's death.
His guilt drove him to offer compensation to Chloe.
"The money for accompanying Kenneth!" Donovan gritted his teeth.
Chloe turned away, ignoring him.
"I'm in pre-med," Chloe said.
"You can take online classes. I'll inform the teachers. I also know the professors at Suncrest University."
Chloe gazed at him in disbelief for a while, realizing that he was aware of her presence at Suncrest University. He appeared to be well-informed about everything.
Perhaps, after Chloe had enrolled at Suncrest University, he refrained from contacting her for fear of her relocating once more or being overwhelmed by frequent calls.
His strategies always seemed to be more cleverly devised than hers. There were no hidden truths between Chloe and him.
Just then, Chloe's phone rang, and it was Brayden calling. She turned around and picked up the call, her demeanor and tone shifting.
"I finished the exam, and it went well. If nothing unexpected happens, I should pass."
"Yes."
"But I have something to deal with now, so I can't leave temporarily. Please help me cancel the flight ticket."
"I don't know yet; I'm not sure how long this will take to resolve."
Chloe spoke to the person on the other end of the line. Donovan recognized that Chloe was conversing with Brayden.
Knowing that Brayden also went to Suncrest University, Donovan deduced that Chloe and Brayden had crossed paths.
He noticed the bracelet on Chloe's wrist, a gift from Brayden, and realized that the child she was carrying was Brayden's.
Despite Chloe's gentle tone during the call, her demeanor turned cold when she finished and rejoined Donovan.
"I agree," she said, "but before I agree, we must have an understanding. If you agree, I'll stay. If not, I can't."
"Go on."
“Firstly, because of the time difference between Verdania and the US, I need to sleep during the day and study at night. Secondly, I'm pregnant, so we have to sleep in separate beds. If anything like yesterday occurs again, I will consider drastic measures. Thirdly, when the time comes, you must provide me with the divorce certificate before I go back to Verdania. I trust that Mr. Blake's verbal agreement holds weight," Chloe declared.
"I agree. I'll have someone bring your things back from the hotel tomorrow."
Chloe turned and headed to the neighboring room to rest.
It was the same room where Donovan had once made her sleep alone, making her feel a bit uneasy. However, after witnessing Amelia's accident and enduring challenging times in Verdania, she suddenly found herself unafraid.
She realized that growth often comes with pain. As she lay in bed, covered by the blanket, she was plagued by recurring nightmares.
One particular nightmare, which had haunted her since Amelia's passing, resurfaced. In her dream, she saw Amelia falling from a building, covered in blood, with Donovan laughing on the upper floor. Chloe woke up in a state of panic.
Upon waking, she heard movement coming from Donovan's room, which continued for an extended period.
