Chapter 591 Keeping Promises
Donovan couldn't stand Chloe crying. Every time she did, it felt like he'd do anything—plucking the stars from the sky just to make her smile again.
"The marriage certificate is fake! I had someone make it. Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant? You went for an abortion by yourself?"
Donovan was both angry and frustrated, but it was too late to change anything now. The situation was already set in stone, and he felt completely powerless.
Chloe still didn't speak, just sobbed in one direction.
"Fuck!" Donovan cursed.
It mostly at himself, and a little at Chloe's slow and silent nature.
She wouldn't say a word, just cried, and Donovan didn't know how to handle her silence. Honestly, he didn't even want to try.
Chloe turned her head and stared at Donovan with wide eyes. She had never heard Donovan curse like this.
"Why are you yelling at me?" Chloe said angrily.
"I'm not yelling at you, I'm yelling at myself. I'm not going home tonight; I'll stay here."
"No!" Chloe firmly refused, "You're always touching me. I just had an abortion; I can't have sex for a month."
"I won't touch you, just sleep next to you." Donovan said, a wave of regret washing over him like never before.
"I'm worried Cynthia will get the wrong idea."
"Don't mention her. We're not married." Donovan became even more irritable.
Because of this unworthy woman, Donovan had lost a child.
"My mom is still outside; I need to put her to sleep." Chloe said, then stood up from Donovan's lap.
"Your mom needs you to put her to sleep?" Donovan was shocked.
"Yes."
As soon as she left the room, a smile spread across Chloe's face. Ridiculous! Donovan!
Paula didn't sleep well; she always curled up and woke up in the middle of the night.
Chloe patted Paula like she was soothing a child, saying, "Mom, don't be afraid, I'm here."
Paula slowly drifted back to sleep.
Chloe felt differently about Paula and Amelia.
She was much more affectionate with Amelia, who had spoiled her since they were kids. Around Amelia, she naturally let her girlish side shine through.
But with Paula, who had been spoiled in her early years only to lead a tough life later on, Chloe felt a deeper sense of responsibility.
Maybe as she got older, that sense of duty just grew stronger.
Chloe had to go to class and wanted to find a nanny for Paula, but it was hard to find one.
After all, Paula was different from most people.
After Paula fell asleep, Chloe returned to her room.
"Do you know anyone familiar?" Chloe asked Donovan as she closed the door.
Donovan was leaning on the bed, reading one of Chloe's books.
Donovan looked up at Chloe, "You want to find a nanny for your mom?"
Chloe was quite surprised at Donovan's accurate guess, "How did you know that?"
"I just had a hunch."
"So, do you know anyone?" Chloe got on the bed and leaned against the headboard.
"Send your mom to my house."
Chloe thought about it. Sending her mom to Donovan's house would mean she had given in to this situation.
This time, Chloe wanted to make Donovan suffer; otherwise, he wouldn't take the idea of "marrying someone else" seriously. If he got away with it once, he'd definitely do it again.
"No, I have to work. I just transferred schools and I'm very busy." Chloe refused.
"You can't find anyone familiar to be a nanny." Donovan seemed determined to make Chloe stay at his house.
Actually, if they really tried, it wasn't impossible to find someone.
After all those years with Donovan, Chloe had come to understand him pretty well.
So she said, "Let's sleep, we'll talk about it tomorrow."
This night, Donovan kept his promise. He just held Chloe from behind and slept, without doing anything else.
