Chapter 525 He Is Not Very Happy
A person listed as Ann in contacts was trying to add Chloe on WhatsApp.
Chloe was surprised; she hadn't been in touch with Ann for a long time.
After adding Ann, Chloe hadn't even spoken yet when Ann sent: [Chloe, what's the deal? You came back from abroad and didn't even talk to me? Are you too proud now that you have a PhD? You didn't even come to see me. If it weren't for Carol secretly sending that personal ad to Mr. Blake, I wouldn't have known you were back.]
Chloe saw it and laughed. Since she wasn't going back home, she didn't bother drying her hair with the hair dryer. She just grabbed a towel, drying her hair while replying: [ I've been teaching at Pearl Peak University, very busy with projects and getting tenure. I wanted to see you, but I was afraid I couldn't keep the promise. How are you? Still planning to stay single?]
Ann: [It's a long story. I wanted to stay single, but James moved into my place.]
Chloe: [Who?]
James Turner was Chloe's former financial director, her direct supervisor.
Ann: [You forgot, he's your old boss. This guy did three years in prison, got out, and his wife divorced him, took the house, money, and kids. I ran into him one day, then he came home with me, and we slept together that night. Now he's at my place, cleaning and cooking all day. He listens to everything I say. But why should I settle for a guy like this?]
It was clear that Ann was very frustrated and wanted to vent, but she had no way out. She was probably stuck with James. After all, it was hard to just dump a guy she had slept with.
It was somewhat similar to Chloe's predicament. Chloe didn't know their situation well and couldn't judge. She had heard that James had pursued Ann, and Ann had remained single all these years, so Chloe didn't know what to say.
Ann then detailed her story with James.
Ann: [ When I was a freshman, James was a junior. I was stunning and charming in my youth, while James came from the countryside and dressed very plainly.]
Ann: [I wouldn't have noticed him at all. But once, when I was getting hot water, I accidentally burned my hand. I almost dropped the kettle full of hot water when a plain-looking student passed by. Without a word, he helped me carry the kettle to my dorm and said, "Did you burn your hand? Run it under cold water; it probably won't leave a scar."]
Ann: [James was so ordinary that I didn't feel anything for him, and even thought he was a bit nosy. But the next day, he brought me some burn ointment, and I still didn't take a liking to him.]
Ann: [Throughout college, I didn't care about anything James did until he graduated and started dating a rich, beautiful girl. He started doing everything for this girl that he used to do for me, and gradually, we lost contact. After James went to prison, his rich wife left him, and he gets involved with me again.]
Chloe kept her head down, looking at her phone.
Ann's messages were long, and Chloe either smiled or pondered, her fingers flying as she replied on WhatsApp.
"Aren't you afraid of getting neck pain?" A sudden cold voice startled Chloe, almost making her drop her phone.
Clearly, Donovan wasn't happy seeing her on her phone all the time.
