Chapter 695 Found a Wealthy Partner
When Chloe arrived at Betty's house, Betty had a sullen look on her face. However, Betty didn't want Chloe to know about the disgraceful incident of Barbara going to Jeffery's house, so she sarcastically said to Chloe, "Ms. Baker, what brings someone as esteemed as you to my place?"
"Barbara got into Jeffery's bed. Jeffery doesn't like her, but she refuses to leave. It's so embarrassing. You need to get Barbara back. Barbara and Jeffery are not a good match; they're not on the same page. You need to take action," Chloe said angrily.
Hearing this, Betty felt as if Chloe had ripped off the mask she had been wearing. She had been trying to hide the situation, but somehow Chloe knew and was now mocking her.
"Chloe, stop talking nonsense. You found yourself a rich man, and now you're slandering Barbara. Do you feel proud of yourself? Let me tell you, Barbara would never be interested in someone like Jeffery, who has nothing. Even if she were, I would never let them be together. Don't think you can use this as an excuse to humiliate our family," Betty, who had always been a small-town woman, had reverted to her old ways after her stint as Barbara's manager ended and their financial situation became tight.
"That's for the best! Then let Barbara find a rich man, too. Jeffery is no good, so stop forcing yourself on him," Chloe said, crossing her arms. With people like this, you had to be tough.
Sure enough, Betty's face turned even more sour after Chloe's words. She was furious and out of breath. "You... you... Chloe, you're not Amelia's biological daughter. Daniel and I still treated you like a human being, and you should be grateful. Now you're repaying kindness with ingratitude by saying such things to me!"
Betty had never done anything kind for Chloe; she was just so angry that she didn't even know what she was saying.
It was Daniel who came out and calmed the situation, even pouring Chloe a glass of water.
The sound of the door opening signaled Barbara's return.
Seeing Chloe at her house, Barbara knew she was there to complain to Betty.
"What? Here to tattle to my mom? Chloe, it's the new century now. Arranged marriages by parents are outdated. I like Jeffery, and yes, I got into his bed. So what? Not happy about it?" Barbara said sharply to Chloe, standing in front of her. "The more you try to stop me, the more determined I am to be with him. I really like Jeffery."
Betty slapped Barbara across the face.
"Mom!" Barbara's eyes widened as she looked at Betty.
Couldn't Betty see that Chloe was the one she should be targeting? Even though Barbara was telling the truth!
"Mr. Parker is such a good catch, but you don't care about his money. Instead, you go for a poor guy. Are you out of your mind? Why can't you be more like Chloe? With money, you have everything. Look at how well Chloe is doing. What do you need love and romance for?" Betty was furious at Barbara's words.
But even after slapping Barbara, she was still her daughter. In her words, she couldn't help but mock Chloe. Chloe only saw Donovan's money and had no love; Barbara, on the other hand, ignored money and saw the person.
Chloe could hear the sarcasm, but she also understood Betty's attitude. Betty was strongly against Barbara and Jeffery being together. Today, Chloe would continue to pressure Betty. There was no way Barbara could ruin Jeffery's life!
"Barbara has no more acting gigs and no money. Jeffery has even less. You can tell by the place he rents. You should find someone to rely on," Chloe said, picking up her bag to leave.
Just as she reached the door, she saw someone about to knock on Barbara's door.
