Chapter 696 Almost Got Exposed
"Mr. Parker?" Chloe was astonished. She was surprised at how small the world was; the "Mr. Parker" Betty had just mentioned turned out to be Matthew.
"Chloe?" Matthew was clearly surprised as well. "Long time no see. I almost didn't recognize you."
When Betty saw Matthew arrive, her face lit up instantly. She walked to the door, pulled Matthew inside, and said to Chloe with a beaming smile, "Chloe, I won't keep you any longer. You should hurry back to class."
With that, she closed the door, leaving Chloe outside.
Matthew saw Barbara sitting dejectedly on the sofa and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Barbara is throwing a tantrum, insisting on going to the film. I told her to take a break, but she wouldn't listen. She says she feels secure only when she's earning money. You see, Barbara has earned a house and a car from acting, but why is she so obsessed with making money?" Betty spoke highly of Barbara, trying to paint her as an "independent and career-minded" woman. The fact that Barbara had stayed out all night at Jeffery's place was something she absolutely couldn't let Matthew know.
Men like Matthew, who are extremely wealthy, place a high value on a woman's reputation.
Betty poured Matthew some water, cut some fruit, and then went to her own room, pushing Daniel out to leave space for Barbara and Matthew.
As soon as she got to the other side, Betty sent Chloe a message: [Chloe, you mustn't tell Mr. Parker that Barbara knows Jeffery. Please, please. If you don't want Barbara and Jeffery to be together, then pray that Barbara marries Matthew.]
Chloe had just gotten off the elevator when she saw Betty's message. She sneered and thought, 'Typical Betty, as long as there's money involved. She was quite curious to see Barbara and Matthew together. Matthew was wealthy and cunning; his treatment of his ex-wife showed he was a tough character. Chloe wondered, if the two of them got together and Barbara wasn't faithful, how would Matthew deal with her?'
Chloe was looking forward to the drama.
Chloe went to school.
While preparing lessons in the office, she sent Donovan a message: [Did you know Matthew is pursuing Barbara?]
[Is that so?]
[Yes, Betty thinks highly of Matthew as a son-in-law because he's rich. I'm quite interested in seeing their drama unfold.] Chloe added.
[Matthew treats you pretty well.] Clearly, Donovan was somewhat displeased with Chloe's attitude.
[Yes, he does. I'm not looking forward to Matthew's drama; I just think Barbara won't gain any advantage under Matthew's control. After all, we both know what happened to his ex-wife. I want Matthew to give Barbara a hard time.] Chloe said.
Barbara was Chloe's sworn enemy!
Donovan didn't respond.
In the afternoon, when Chloe got home, Maya asked where she had been all day. Chloe didn't want Maya to worry about Jeffery, so she made up a lie. Maya, still puzzled, said, "Didn't you and Mr. Blake go to the same place?"
Chloe thought, 'Oh no, I don't know what excuse Donovan made up, almost got caught.'
Just then, Jake came up and called out, "Mom, Mom, where did you go last night? Why didn't I see you this morning?"
To be fair, Jake was more sensitive and delicate than Francis. Maybe because he lacked love from a young age, he was very afraid of losing the people he loved, so he was more clingy than Francis. Who wouldn't feel compassion for such a fragile child?
"I went to a friend's house and went straight to school in the morning. That's why you didn't see me. Did you miss me?" Chloe's voice softened, influenced by Jake's tone.
Jake nodded, "Yes."
"Well, I'm back now, aren't I?" Chloe hugged Jake, feeling even angrier at Cynthia. How could she mistreat such a lovely child?
