Chapter 212 Alienation
After Amelia and Karen left, Clara also comforted Gordon back to the room.
Donovan and Chloe returned to the bedroom.
Donovan lit a cigarette and sat on the sofa.
He slowly exhaled smoke, looking sexy and blurred, his gaze seeming to be fixed on Chloe, yet not quite.
"Did you make my brother like this?" Chloe stood there, looking at him coldly.
Donovan flicked the cigarette ash nonchalantly and replied, "Don't blame me unfairly. I didn't force him to gamble. His actions are his own.”
"But you gave him money!" Chloe defended.
" Chloe, talk sensibly. I may have a lot of money, but I didn't gamble! I couldn't have foreseen his actions," Donovan responded.
Chloe was left speechless by his argument.
Jacob had never tried gambling before, and Donovan never expected him to start. Donovan gifted him money with good intentions, but Jacob ended up disappointing him.
Chloe's accusation against Donovan was reckless, even though deep down she knew it wasn't true. Donovan was sly and could have easily anticipated Jacob's gambling tendencies.
Jacob was broke to begin with. Then, out of nowhere, he came into possession of a hundred thousand dollars and didn't know how to spend it, so he went on a wild spending spree. And when it comes to burning through cash, gambling is the quickest way.
Donovan had a keen insight into Jacob's mindset. Due to their past encounters, Donovan already harbored a dislike for Jacob. As Chloe lay next to Donovan each night, she felt a sudden chill run down her spine.
"If someone wants to evict them, can't you do anything?" Chloe's tone softened.
"The house is already in his name. I can't do anything." Donovan spread his hands, looking helpless.
Although Jacob wasn't Chloe's real brother, he had been mischievous, but he had grown up with Chloe.
Chloe couldn't bear it.
She couldn't blame Donovan for his detachment, either. After all, this situation wasn't caused by him.
Jacob brought it upon himself.
"Let's go to bed." Chloe felt helpless.
She was somewhat worried about Amelia and wanted to ask about the situation over there.
However, Amelia had already sent Chloe a message: [Chloe, don't try to convince Donovan about this issue. He has already done everything he could for Jacob. Jacob and Karen can spend one more night at the house. Tomorrow, they will have to find a new place on their own, but it's for the best. Jacob needs to learn to be independent from now on. Try not to stress about it too much.]
Chloe: [Okay.]
As Chloe was tucking herself into sleep, a commotion suddenly came from downstairs.
"Sarah, she's definitely Sarah!" Gordon's voice was loud.
Donovan put down his book and went out.
Donovan's voice echoed from downstairs, "I've already mentioned this—she's not Sarah; she's Chloe's mother. Don't disrupt Kenneth's peace; otherwise, head back to Dreamonia.
After Donovan went upstairs, Chloe saw that he still had a furrowed brow.
"Did Kenneth get disturbed?" she asked Donovan.
"Probably, but he didn't say anything."
"Then don't be angry!" Chloe caressed his chest.
Donovan took a deep breath, then pressed hard on Chloe.
His stubble grazed Chloe's delicate skin.
"It hurts." Chloe moaned.
" It's painful even before we begin! We've gone through this countless times, and it still hurts!" His voice carried a hint of uncertainty and allure. As his lips and tongue lightly grazed Chloe's cheek, her ears flushed red.
"My face hurts," Chloe said.
"I haven't even started yet." He teased Chloe again.
Chloe playfully hit his back firmly. His words sparked mischievous thoughts in Chloe's mind. However, her attention was divided as she couldn't shake off her concern for Jacob. After all, Jacob's predicament remained unresolved.
She felt that maybe on the day of the engagement, Jacob had crossed Donovan's bottom line, so Donovan let him be, even schemed against him.
Perhaps Donovan felt that Jacob had received his comeuppance, which was for the best.
Despite being in bed with Donovan, Chloe couldn't shake off a sense of alienation that seemed to hang between them.
Marriage was a matter for two families, and now, because of the two families, there was a rift between them.
The next day at work, Amelia sent Chloe messages.
Amelia: [Karen and Jacob have chosen to stay at Karen's other house, which I didn't even know she had. It's been seven or eight years, and the house still requires renovations. They are asking us to foot the bill for the renovation expenses.]
Amelia: [Please don't mention this to Donovan. I don't want him to spend any more money. I feel guilty about it. It's really a hassle. I'll check out the house later in the afternoon.]
Chloe: [Okay, Mom. Come over around five, and I'll go after work.]
Amelia: [Okay, after seeing the house, I'll treat you to dinner outside.]
Chloe: [In that case, I'm in the mood for pasta.]
Amelia: [Sure thing, it's my treat.]
