Chapter 320 The Case Was Closed
The next day, after Donovan went to the company, Chloe started looking up news about Paisley.
Normally, she didn't pay much attention to entertainment news. So, if she didn't go to the office and no one reminded her, she definitely wouldn't have known about Paisley's comeback.
She saw a photo of Paisley standing among a group of children, smiling brightly.
Chloe recognized the elementary school; she had been there before. It was the place where she donated computers on behalf of Andrew.
Now it had become a place for Paisley to promote herself.
And this place was chosen by Donovan for her.
Chloe felt deeply upset. She tried hard to focus her thoughts back on work, but she just couldn't do it.
Her phone's battery had gone flat, and she was too unmotivated to juice it up. She didn't want to deal with Paisley anymore, and she certainly didn't want to see her hypocritical face.
In Donovan's office, the police sent him the closing statement.
The investigation concluded that a deliveryman accidentally put a piece of white phosphorus into Barbara's parcel. After it was delivered to Barbara's house, the parcel hadn't been opened yet, and the white phosphorus ignited spontaneously. It was nighttime, and Barbara first noticed the fire in her room. She then woke up Daniel and the others, but by the time they got to Walter's room, Walter had already been burned to death.
The police had also detained the deliveryman. He said it was an accident, that the white phosphorus was for his own use at home, and that no one had instructed him to do it.
Besides the company's fine, he would also face criminal penalties, though the punishment would be relatively light.
"Mr. Blake, that's the entire result. Barbara harbored no intention to murder, and she rejected the accusation of letting the fire escalate, so we can't record it in the statement or convict her," Mr. Turner said on WhatsApp.
Donovan carefully read the closing statement, feeling that something was off.
Logically, Paisley was not clever enough to come up with such a method. She probably didn't even know when white phosphorus would ignite, or that it could spontaneously ignite at all.
If it wasn't an accident and someone did it on purpose, that person must be really smart.
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in," Donovan said.
It was Victoria.
"Mr. Blake, could you contact Chloe about the NexInnovate Technologies Company case? I tried messaging her on WhatsApp and calling her today, but she didn't respond. I'm worried something might have happened to her." This was almost the first time Victoria had entered Donovan's office, and she looked very nervous.
"Hold on." Donovan frowned slightly and called Maya.
"Is Chloe at home? What's she doing? Why isn't she answering her phone?"
"Oh, Mr. Blake, she's sorting out the kids' clothes. Her phone is probably dead. She watched news for the entire morning."
"Got it." Donovan could tell that Chloe was in a bad mood.
"She's fine. Her phone is dead."
"That's a relief. When you get home, could you please ask her how the Elevate Structures Group project is going? They've been pushing for it."
"I will." Donovan guessed that it was probably about work-related matters that Victoria was trying to contact Chloe, and Chloe didn't reply.
Chloe had been upset with him these past few days, so Donovan brought the closing statement home in the afternoon.
Chloe's thoughts had been drifting all day.
When Donovan came back in the afternoon, Maya was still cooking in the kitchen.
He went into the bedroom and placed a stack of documents in front of Chloe.
"What is this?" Chloe asked.
"The closing statement."
Chloe frowned slightly. She had read in the news today that Paisley had just signed a contract for a new drama series and was preparing to hone her acting skills on stage. 'How could the case be closed already?' she thought.
