Chapter 99: I Feel Sorry for Donovan
When Chloe went to see her mother, Riley told her some good news: Amelia's little finger had moved a few times a few days ago.
"Really?" Chloe couldn't express how happy she was. Her mother had been lying there for six whole years, and now she was moving again. "Are you sure you didn't see wrongly?"
Chloe found it hard to believe and wanted a more certain answer.
"How could I? I've been taking care of patients for so many years. I can still distinguish between peripheral nerve damage and instinctive reactions," Aunt Riley said as she wiped Amelia's hands.
"Thank you, Aunt Riley." Chloe's eyes welled up with tears. She believed that her mother's improvement was all thanks to Riley's dedication, and she was extremely grateful to Riley.
"Okay, this is what I should do," Aunt Riley said as she patted Chloe's head.
In the afternoon, she went to her sister's house with Sofia. It was a high-end residence, a comfortable living environment.
Logan opened the door.
"Why are you dressed like this?" Logan looked at Chloe, dressed like a high school student, slightly surprised.
Chloe just smiled and remained silent.
In order to highlight Sofia's maturity and beauty, Chloe was particularly quiet tonight, wearing plain clothes. Compared to her, Sofia looked like a fairy from heaven.
Sofia used the excuse of visiting her sister to come and meet her future in-laws early. Logan's parents were very impressed with her, and she was happy about that.
Logan felt quite depressed and rarely spoke.
After leaving Logan's house, Chloe and Sofia walked in the bright neighborhood.
"I destroyed my image in order to highlight you. Give me the money, a thousand dollars, and also another thousand for portraying you so beautifully," Chloe felt helpless when she thought about the image she ruined.
"Are you robbing me? Are all wealthy people so stingy?" Sofia knew that Chloe had sacrificed a lot, so she sent her a small red envelope.
One dollar.
"Sofia, you..."
"Chloe, you have such a wealthy husband, do you still care about these few dollars from me?"
As the two girls walked and played around, they almost bumped into a lady walking her dog across the street.
"I thought I was mistaken, but it really is you, Chloe. What a coincidence to meet you here," Paisley appeared in front of Chloe, wearing casual clothes and walking a large Husky.
She looked Chloe up and down, then laughed. "No wonder Donovan doesn't like you. By dressing like this, aren't you deliberately embarrassing him?"
Chloe was surprised to see Paisley here, and Paisley's words were not at all kind.
"So you live here," Chloe didn't really want to pay attention to Paisley.
Paisley smiled. "I didn't buy this house, it's...never mind, I won't tell you. But it's under his name. If I tell you, you won't be happy. He occasionally stays here."
"So you mean to say that the house belongs to my husband? We're already married, and his assets are half mine, so Ms. Torres, the house you're living in is also mine," Chloe stated confidently. "I have a say in when you need to move out."
Paisley was furious and felt a pain in her chest. "Look at you, so poor. Why would he be attracted to you?"
"Even though I'm poor, he's still attracted to me. He just didn't find the dazzling Ms. Torres appealing. Shouldn't you reflect on that?" Chloe clenched her fist, giving an unyielding response.
"Oh, by the way, there's something I want to tell you in private. Come over here," Paisley said, interrupting the conversation. She commanded Chloe.
Sofia grabbed Chloe's hand, preventing her from going.
But Chloe knew that whatever Paisley was going to say must be related to Donovan. She was curious, so she went over.
Six years ago, during the early days of Donovan's entrepreneurship, he got injured at a construction site. His eyes were blinded by lime powder and he had to get a corneal transplant. He waited in the hospital for a long time, on the verge of despair, when someone in the hospital passed away and voluntarily donated their corneas. Later, it was me who took care of Donovan during his surgery and until he was discharged. And then we started dating, madly in love. This is something you shouldn't mention to him. Donovan minds when others say that his corneas are someone else's. Don't slip up. If Donovan gets angry, don't blame me for not warning you," Paisley said, as she walked away, holding her dog.
Chloe stood there, stunned, her mind empty.
She had never brought it up since her father forbade her before he passed away.
She just never expected that Donovan also minded when others brought it up, just because the corneas weren't his own.
"Look at you, in such a pitiful state. I worry about Donovan more than you do. You're not worth it!" Paisley said, walking far away and looking back to mock Chloe.
