Chapter 189 Kids, Don't Ask

After organizing the materials, Chloe went to Donovan's office to hand in her diary and mentioned that she had retrieved all the documents.

"Matthew told me to go back and work hard," Chloe said anxiously as she glanced at her diary.

She had just written it after returning from Aurora Investments. She drew a solid pentagram at the end and wrote, "Donovan, you jerk!" She repeated it three times. Hopefully, Donovan wouldn't notice!

In the afternoon, Chloe went to Donovan's office for extra lessons. The diary was still in its original place.

Chloe was more focused during the class today. About halfway through, there was a knock on the door. Charles went to open it, and a ragged child with a runny nose entered, staring straight at Chloe.

"Who are you looking for?" Chloe asked the little boy.

The boy grabbed Chloe's hand. "Sister, Mom is sick and dying. She wants you to come see her."

"Mom?" Chloe was initially puzzled, but then she remembered what her mother had told her. Barbara and Paisley seemed to be setting a trap for her here, but she wouldn't fall for it!

Donovan watched the scene unfold as if it were a show. Chloe had mentioned this to him before, so he wasn't surprised. Charles was a bit puzzled.

Chloe took out two hundred dollars from her bag. "Tell me, who asked you to say these things to me? Sister will give you this money, okay?" Chloe squatted down and comforted the little boy.

Though the boy was only seven or eight years old, he knew the value of money. His eyes were fixed on the money in Chloe's hand, gleaming with interest.

Chloe knew it wasn't right to bribe a child with money, but she didn't have anything better at hand.

"It was a sister who asked me to say this! She told me to say that your mom is a dancer, and I'm your real brother." After the boy finished speaking, he took the money from Chloe's hand.

"And where is your mom?" Chloe asked him.

"She passed away a long time ago." With that, the boy turned and ran off.

In theory, Chloe had seen through the boy's tricks, which would expose Barbara and Paisley's scheme. However, Chloe couldn't find joy in the situation because, like the boy, she felt rootless.

If her mother hadn't warned her in advance, today Chloe might have dismissed the boy's words or been suspicious, but she wouldn't have been so calm.

Although Chloe was saddened, she couldn't continue with the class. She claimed to have a headache and wanted to end the lesson early.

"Donovan, what do you think...?" Charles asked Donovan.

"You can go home first," Donovan signaled to Charles.

Alone on the sofa, Chloe's tears began to fall slowly. Donovan handed her a tissue.

"Do you think I'm being weak?" Chloe wiped her tears, laughing at her earlier overreaction.

"Yes, you've always been quite weak," Donovan teased.

"I knew you'd mock me like this!" Chloe complained.

"Did you meet anyone at Aurora Investments this morning?" He lit a cigarette, blowing smoke rings that captivated Chloe.

Chloe was still pondering who her biological parents were and didn't catch on.

"What people?" Chloe thought, suddenly remembering Brayden.

Did Donovan know that Brayden had gone to Aurora Investments this morning? Chloe felt deceived. Did he know Brayden was going, possibly even arranged it, and insisted she retrieve the documents?

He wanted Brayden to see Chloe take the file, yet she couldn't show any anger. What was the meaning behind this?

He wanted Brayden to know that Chloe and Brayden belonged to different companies and would eventually part ways when it came to interests.

Of course, Donovan hoped for more than just a separation based on interests. He wanted Brayden and Chloe to part ways in every aspect.

Donovan was heartless!

But at that moment, Chloe didn't want to talk. She was immersed in the sorrow of being an orphan and didn't want to discuss anything.

Donovan only added to her sadness.

"Please, let's not argue right now, okay?" Chloe's eyes teared up, her face clouded with mist as she looked at Donovan. "I don't want to think about him now, and I dare not even think about him in front of you."

"Are you thinking about him behind my back?" Donovan didn't let her off the hook.

"When you're not around, of course, I think of you." Chloe looked pitiful, but her words were smooth.

Donovan softened. "Don't just say what sounds good to me."

"I'm not. I'm speaking from the heart," Chloe replied.

"I'll take you out for dinner tonight," Donovan said. "Do you like Western food?"

Chloe nodded, her mood quite low. This was the second time Donovan had invited her out to eat.

Chloe suddenly felt a sense of being a "couple."

After making a phone call, Donovan drove Chloe to Bistro Bliss, Maple Valley's most famous Western restaurant. Donovan ordered the dishes, and Chloe's only task was to eat.

The restaurant was located on a high floor with excellent views.

"Do you come here often?" Chloe asked, as the waiters had called him "Mr. Blake," indicating familiarity.

"I used to come often," Donovan said as he perused the menu.

"Which 'used to'?" Chloe inquired.

"Do you really want to know? It's best not to care about a man's past. It's too much to handle," Donovan advised.

Chloe thought to herself, "Who cares about your past?"

"Why did your mom suddenly want to talk to you about your origins?" Donovan was puzzled. After Chloe had mentioned this to him, the boy or Barbara had planned this.

"My mom called my aunt, overheard my uncle mentioning that Barbara was working as Paisley's assistant, and she thought Barbara might target me from this angle. My mom wanted to warn me in case I was caught off guard," Chloe explained.

"Your mom is quite insightful," Donovan remarked.

From the incident where Chloe returned the money, Donovan had seen that she probably didn't intend to play games, but it had that effect. At least Donovan had softened toward Chloe and viewed her in a new light.

"How could my mom be so insightful? Not even a tenth as much as you," Chloe retorted, slightly miffed.

Donovan chuckled deeply, "Kids, don't ask."

"Who's the kid here?" Chloe shot back.
