Chapter 483 He's Almost Forty

After a long, awkward silence, Donovan finally trudged upstairs while Chloe was having a blast with Francis. The second she spotted Donovan, her smile vanished.

"Why the long face when you see me?" Donovan asked, then turned to Francis. "Francis, time to hit the sack."

Francis, not wanting to ruin their moment, headed downstairs.

After Francis left, Donovan slid next to Chloe and suddenly pulled her into a hug. Chloe leaned into his chest, listening to his heartbeat, wondering if he was feeling okay.

"Want me to go with you to the hospital tomorrow?" he asked softly.

"No need," Chloe shot back, instinctively pulling away. Even if she needed someone, she didn't want the guy who caused her issue to tag along.

"Don't be stubborn," Donovan insisted.

That night, he leaned over and kissed her deeply. Chloe tensed up, afraid he was looking for more. Her hands clenched tight.

"I won't touch you," he promised.

"Since when are you so sane?" Chloe retorted.

Donovan didn't answer, just kissed her harder.

The next day, Chloe's pain was worse. Donovan took her to Jane's hospital. Jane was an OB-GYN. Chloe figured it was a good chance to catch up. They hadn't talked in three years, and she was curious about Jane.

During Chloe's exam, Donovan waited outside.

"Chloe?" Jane's eyes widened. "Where the heck have you been?"

Jane looked her over. Chloe still had that pure beauty, but there was something deeper in her eyes now.

"Just went to Emerald Isle for a PhD," Chloe said, feeling a bit awkward. She hadn't reached out in years.

"I see. After the exam, I need to tell you something," Jane said.

"Something important?" Chloe got on the table, surprised. 'We haven't talked in years. What's up with Jane?'

Jane did a thorough check and said, "Who messed you up? Was it Donovan again?"

Chloe blushed. Everyone knew what that kind of red and swollen meant. She mumbled and nodded.

"I told you, Donovan's got a crazy drive. And now he's at his peak," Jane said.

"He's almost forty," Chloe pointed out.

"Forty? A guy like Donovan will be like this forever," Jane scoffed.

Chloe gave an awkward smile.

While writing a prescription, Jane said, "A few days ago, someone asked about your and Francis's blood types and wanted all your hospital records. No idea why. Chloe, does this have anything to do with your time abroad?"

Jane held a pen in one hand and Chloe's hand in the other.

Chloe felt touched. Jane didn't ask why she hadn't been in touch for three years but instead found an excuse for her.

"Chloe, haven't you tried to check it yourself? Or let Donovan handle it? He's got the skills."

"Yeah," Chloe nodded. Just then, her phone rang. It was Jeffery. "Hey, Jeffery."

"Ms. Baker, Saoirse and Isabel came back yesterday. Why didn't you? Everything okay?" Jeffery asked, concerned.

"All good. I'm in Maple Valley with Francis. I'll be back in a few days," Chloe said.

"Good to hear." With that, Jeffery hung up.

"Who was that? Nice voice," Jane commented.

"By the way, have you dated anyone these years?" Chloe asked Jane. "You're almost thirty."

"Don't even start. Every time my mom asks, I just want to scream, 'Where do I find the time?' I work all day, watching you guys have kids," Jane grumbled. "Alright, here's your prescription. Take care."

"Here's my new number. Let's stay in touch." Chloe said, calling Jane so she could have her number.

"Sure, call me when you have your second kid," Jane teased.

Chloe stayed silent.
