Chapter 287 She's Six Months Along, Didn't You Know?
Mario's office.
Charles and Mario had a fierce argument.
Charles spoke rapidly and loudly in his native language, seemingly trying to prevent Mario from understanding. Mario also spoke energetically, but he struggled to comprehend when others spoke quickly. Seeing Charles tense up only fueled Mario's frustration.
For a moment, Mario's office was a cacophony of various languages.
Donovan, the boss, did not play his part; he merely stood there, watching the commotion.
Chloe had finished her yoga session and changed her clothes.
Hearing the noise coming from Mario's office, she looked in that direction.
The door to Mario's office was open, and as she was buttoning her shirt, she caught a glimpse of Donovan with his back turned, lighting a cigarette and glancing at her. His gaze was filled with mischief, curiosity about Chloe, and a lot of interest in her.
Their eyes met for a fleeting, electrifying moment.
Chloe, who was determined to study abroad, was almost swayed by that single glance.
As Chloe watched the scene unfold, suddenly, there was a loud "bang" as Charles stormed out of Mario's office, slamming the door behind him.
"Crazy!" Charles cursed.
This was entirely unbecoming of a doctor.
Donovan was still inside, smoothing things over with Mario.
Charles walked past Chloe without saying a word, but then suddenly, he turned back.
"Chloe, could you lend a hand to the audit department for a bit? I need some help reviewing the finance department's work. Since you've had experience in both departments, you're the best person for the job. I've seen the new accounting approach you've been using, and it's really innovative," Charles said, looking at Chloe.
"Me?" Chloe pointed at herself, surprised.
"Yes. You."
“I probably can't. I'm about to give birth, and I'm going abroad for graduate school in January," Chloe responded, genuinely unable to offer assistance. Donovan stepped out of Mario's office.
"What's happening?" Donovan inquired of the pair engaged in conversation.
"I asked your wife to help me audit the finance department's work, but she declined," Charles mentioned, his anger subsiding. His frustration was never aimed at Chloe, and besides, Chloe was pregnant and Donovan's wife, so he had to be courteous.
Donovan glanced at Chloe and then said to Charles, "You'll have to find another way."
"I can't conjure up employees," Charles said, spreading his empty hands. "Why did you generate so many orders?"
"Enough, don't blame others for everything," Donovan said as he walked away.
"I know you care about Chloe and don't want her to be too tired," Charles remarked.
"She's six months along, didn't you know?" Donovan retorted angrily.
Chloe felt a warm feeling in her heart as she listened to Donovan's sincere words. With each moment, he was drawing her back.
Bringing her back from the edge of hating him. Because, deep down, Chloe had a heart.
"If you're tired, come to my office," Donovan said, turning to Chloe.
"Okay," Chloe replied.
Ten minutes later, Chloe was sitting on the sofa in his office.
'The child is yours!' This thought was stuck in Chloe's throat, but she couldn't bring herself to say it.
"Is there something you want to say?" Donovan asked, noticing Chloe's unusual demeanor.
"Oh, nothing," Chloe forced the words back down her throat.
"Work's over; let's go home," he said after a while.
"Okay," Chloe responded.
Once in the car, Chloe noticed that the sky outside was dark, as if it was going to rain. Luckily, they were already on their way home.
"Did Charles and Mario have a conflict today?" Chloe asked.
"Yes, the audit department is swamped this year and doesn't have time to audit the finance department, so Charles was upset.”
Chloe nodded thoughtfully. "Is the audit department really that busy?"
"Yes. It's getting busier, and it's hard to find good people."
"You..." Chloe hesitated for a moment. "You're not putting on a show for me, are you?"
"A show?" Donovan seemed puzzled at first, but then he smiled coldly. "Chloe, you're not that important."
"I..." Chloe blushed with embarrassment at her own self-importance.
She believed Donovan was just putting on a show to inform her that New East Group was extremely busy, causing two significant departments to clash. He hoped to persuade her to remain at New East Group instead of going overseas.
"You know yourself how foolish that idea is," Donovan said to her.
Chloe felt a pang of regret for her earlier words.
She believed that there were better ways for him to keep her around without having to sacrifice two important individuals. While Chloe had been following Brayden's instructions for her own benefit, she knew that intentionally causing conflict between Charles and Mario did not align with Donovan's usual behavior.
If it were truly his doing, it would mean risking the company just for her, something Chloe believed Donovan was too smart to do.
Chloe realized she had overanalyzed the situation.
