Chapter 276 He was Very Calculating

Maria went to Brayden's room. Recently, Brayden had been locking himself in his room after returning home, feeling very down.

"What's been going on these past few days, son?" Maria asked Brayden.

"Oh, nothing much, just work stuff," Brayden replied half-heartedly.

Lately, Brayden had been having a tough time. His proposal had failed, and work was more frustrating— Virgil, provoked by Carol, had impulsively become the largest shareholder of the First Accounting Firm. However, Virgil didn't understand firm management and had all his projects intercepted by Donovan, leaving Brayden frustrated. He and Virgil had different philosophies, and he was preparing to leave the First Accounting Firm.

"Are you also worried about Chloe?"

Brayden was taken aback, then answered, "Yes."

After a failed proposal, he didn't know how to approach Chloe again. He was stuck in this awkward situation.

"Son, let me ask you, is Chloe's child yours?" Maria asked.

Brayden knew that if he said it wasn't his, Maria would definitely not let Chloe into the house in the future. So, Brayden said, "Yes!"

Maria nodded thoughtfully.

"Are you sure? After all, in such matters, a mother would know best," Maria said seriously. She had to find out whose child it really was.

Brayden then recalled that day when he went to Chloe's house and saw the human-shaped impression beside her. Although he felt a pang of jealousy, he still said, "I'm sure. This child was conceived when I first went to Suncrest State. Although she's living at Donovan's house now, nothing has happened between them. Donovan is connected to Chloe's mother's death, and Chloe hates him."

"Really?" Maria asked. Jacob had mentioned that although Chloe was at Serenity Springs Estates, she wasn't in a good mood.

"Really. I went to propose to Chloe, and she refused."

"So, that’s why you've been feeling down lately," Maria asked again. "But if she likes you, why did she refuse your proposal?"

Brayden thought for a moment, "It wasn't exactly a refusal. Just as I started to propose, her housekeeper came back."

"Shall I propose on your behalf?" Maria suggested.

Hearing Brayden talk today, Maria felt much more at ease. Given what happened to Chloe's mother, Chloe wouldn't look back.

Maria had Brayden tell her the address of Serenity Springs Estates, and she planned to go the next day.

Brayden said that most companies opened on the eighth, so Donovan would probably be at work the next day.

Early in the morning, Maria stood at Chloe's door. But when she knocked, it was Donovan who opened the door.

"And you are?" Donovan didn't recognize Maria. She wasn't there the last time he picked up Chloe.

"Mr. Blake, you're here. I'm Brayden's mother," Maria said, her tone naturally unfriendly, seeing Donovan as her son's biggest enemy.

"Please, come in," Donovan invited Maria in.

Chloe was sitting on the sofa reading a book about raising children. Hearing someone come in, she looked back.

"Mrs. Perez, what brings you here?" Chloe saw it was Maria, hurriedly put the book down on the table and stood up to greet her.

"Your belly is so big now!" Maria walked to Chloe's side. "My dear grandson."

Maria touched Chloe's belly. Chloe felt a bit awkward.

"I'll go to my room, you two talk," Donovan said. Although he wasn't happy to see Maria, he knew his place. He should avoid women's conversations.

"Oh, Mr. Blake, no need. Some things are meant for you to hear," Maria said to Donovan, not as fawning and flattering as Dylan, since she didn't know what Dylan had done back then.

Donovan sat on a single sofa nearby. Maya came out to pour water for Maria.

"No need! I won't touch anything from the Blake family!" Maria raised her hand and said.

Maya looked at Donovan, who signaled her to leave.

"Mrs. Perez, thank you for the cross you brought me from the church last time. It's beautiful, I really like it," Chloe said some polite words first.

"Cross?" Maria frowned slightly. She didn't know anything about a cross.

"Yes, the one for protecting the child," Chloe said.

"Oh, that one. I forgot. I did bring it. May it protect my grandson," Maria said vaguely.

Seeing her confused expression, Donovan realized that Maria had not brought the cross from the church. It was just an excuse Brayden used to give Chloe a gift under the pretext of protecting the child so Chloe wouldn't take it off.

It seemed Brayden wasn't a simple person either; he was very calculating.
