Chapter 135 I Woke Up. Should I Go Home?
Chloe and Amelia chatted until late. Donovan waited downstairs. At 8:50, he received a WhatsApp message from his assistant that contained a Word document. The assistant had efficiently located Todd's former subordinates and his attending physician, inquiring about the incident.
After Todd's fall, he was taken to Maple Valley Medical University Hospital, where it was discovered he had broken his spine. Even if he recovered, he would be paralyzed. Todd privately expressed his reluctance to burden his family with his condition.
During a discussion with the doctor, Amelia learned of a young man in need of a cornea transplant. She mentioned this to Todd. In a conversation with Chloe and Amelia, he expressed his wish to donate his corneas anonymously. Both Amelia and Chloe decided to take care of Todd and not dwell on this matter.
However, a week later, Todd removed his own oxygen mask. After Todd's passing, his records mysteriously disappeared from the hospital. Donovan discovered that Tyler Torres, a patient at the hospital, had a daughter named Paisley. Tyler passed away a day after Todd. The hospital's director was Paisley's distant uncle. The dates of Tyler and Todd's deaths were manipulated, making it seem like Tyler died a day earlier.
Donovan was moved by the revelation. He couldn't imagine what Todd felt when he removed his oxygen mask, nor could he fathom Paisley's emotions as she orchestrated these events. If Amelia hadn't shared this information, Donovan would have remained in the dark. All the records from that time seemed flawless, and he had no way of knowing about another person named Todd.
As for the girl who held his hand, Paisley claimed it was her, but Chloe's secretive nature made it hard to confirm. The Word document also detailed Todd's preferences and characteristics: he loved garlic stir-fried pork, excelled at making mushroom cheese soup, considered his daughter Chloe his treasure, and disliked using umbrellas.
Donovan was suddenly overwhelmed by a strange emotion. He finally understood why Chloe cooked for him and gave him an umbrella. Her mysterious disappearance was on the anniversary of her father's death. Donovan realized why Chloe had come to New East to seek employment. It was because of her father's eyes, which were now in him.
Donovan was unsure of how he should treat Chloe, as the daughter of his savior or as his wife. If she were his savior's daughter, he would do anything for her. But if she was his wife, she had not been a good one.
Chloe's phone call broke the silence. "Donovan, my mom woke up. I want to talk to her tonight and won't be coming home. Can you go back first?" Chloe said excitedly.
"Make sure she rests. I'll leave," Donovan replied wearily and then left.
Chloe thought to herself, "We're not a real couple. He has no empathy." Of course, if she considered him her "main source of income," it was a different story.
Despite her disappointment, Chloe was still happy. She was afraid that Amelia would get tired or that she would say everything and then remain silent, so she told Amelia to rest early. She lay in bed, sending WhatsApp messages to Sofia, Jacob, and everyone she knew, almost ready to send a group message.
