Chapter 140
I was taken aback by the question. My husband, weak? I couldn't fathom where this was going. The curiosity gnawed at me, urging me to read on.
When Donovan came upstairs, I was already sitting by the bed, engrossed in a book. She stole a glance at him; he seemed troubled these past few days.
"What's been bothering you?" she asked as he settled onto the bed. She leaned in, her gaze fixed on his eyes, seeking answers. What Donovan once mistook for admiration, he now realized was her search for Todd's presence within him.
"Why do you keep staring into my eyes?" he snapped. I was at a loss for words.
Later, in the darkness, Donovan's actions felt like retribution. Scenes of their past played in his mind: her constant gaze, her request for mushroom cheese soup, a dish she had often cooked, and her imagined connection between Todd and the dish. Was she Chloe or Todd in his eyes?
He once mocked my taste, but now he found it ironic. He took his frustrations out on me. The next morning, Donovan asked her to go to work alone.
"Are you feeling unwell?" I inquired, despite the previous night's ordeal.
"I'm perfectly fine," he retorted. "Can you drive? Take a car from the front, it's difficult to get a taxi."
"I can't. I haven't learned to drive." Previously, Chloe's financial situation had made it difficult for her to afford treatment for Amelia, let alone a car.
After Chloe left, Donovan contacted his assistant, Jacob, and asked him to come over. Donovan had given Jacob a house, not only because Todd had saved his life, but also to prevent any embarrassing incidents in the company.
"When was the last time you spoke to Brayden?" Donovan asked, lounging on the sofa with one leg crossed over the other.
Jacob had already reaped the benefits from Donovan; the fully furnished house was a great advantage, and there were still many opportunities for development. Naturally, Jacob would side with the one who had the resources. "Brayden is just wishful thinking; Chloe doesn't see him that way," Jacob replied. "She admires someone with your capabilities."
"Has Chloe mentioned anything about our company to Brayden?" Donovan inquired.
"You mean the incident with James being arrested? No, she didn't mention it. The day Amelia woke up, Chloe explained why you couldn't make it; she was covering for you. Otherwise, Amelia would have had some complaints. Brayden and I were there; Brayden might have overheard," Jacob explained.
Donovan's anger subsided. Jacob also explained the situation with Ellie going to Brayden's office and the reasons behind Ann's exclusion.
"In the future, make sure Brayden and Ellie get together," Donovan's gaze, filled with hidden intentions, fixed on Jacob. "By any means necessary!"
Jacob thought for a moment, "Alright, I'll handle it."
"And if you ever face any difficulties, come to me."
"Okay," Jacob replied.
After Jacob left, Paisley arrived. "I went to your company, but your secretary said you weren't at work today. You're hard to reach," Paisley said, placing her bag on the sofa.
Donovan looked at Paisley's fiery red lips, sensing a hidden agenda. "Why did you suddenly remember me? You never called before coming," Donovan's tone was as mocking and cool as ever. But within that coolness, Paisley failed to detect anything amiss.
"I was afraid to call; you might not let me come," Paisley said, glancing at her grandfather's room. She wasn't really here to see Donovan today; she was here to check on her grandfather.
“How could I not let you come?”
"But you might. I have a big project this time, and the original investors pulled out. I promised the producer that I could bring in new investments. Donovan, you have to help me," Paisley said.
"We need to hold a board meeting for that," Donovan replied.
"Since when do you make decisions without consulting me? You weren't like this before."
"Investing in films is a new business, beyond our usual scope," Donovan explained.
Paisley feigned disappointment. She had mentioned investing in films to Donovan several times before, but Donovan was always cautious. He never ventured into unfamiliar territories, or perhaps, he had never intended to take an interest in the film industry.
Paisley knew that it was just an excuse. "Enough of this idle talk! I haven't even greeted my grandfather yet, wait here," Paisley said before heading to her grandfather's room.
