Chapter 516 You're Just Going to Let Him Go?
"Tomorrow I'll go with you to Pearl Peak University. I have a meeting in the Pearl Peak City anyway," Donovan told Maya.
These days, Donovan didn't mind heading there at all; actually, he was looking for any excuse to visit.
"I'm just worried that even if I go, Jeffery won't talk to me," Maya said, looking stressed.
"Don't sweat it. I'm here," Donovan reassured her.
If Jeffery wouldn't talk, there was always Chloe. This definitely had something to do with Chloe.
"Dad, are we going to Pearl Peak University again? Does that mean we can see Mom?" Francis asked, all excited.
"Pretty much," Donovan replied.
Francis clapped his hands. "Yeah! That's great!"
The next day, Donovan, Maya, and Francis arrived at the school around noon.
Jeffery had offered to treat them to a meal, but Donovan insisted on hosting at the hotel instead.
"What's going on?" Donovan asked. Jeffery had always seemed like a steady kid, mature for his age. He liked Chloe a lot, but after finding out about Donovan and Chloe's relationship, he decisively backed off.
Even though Jeffery had pursued Chloe, Donovan didn't hold it against him because Jeffery was a guy with principles.
"Nothing!" Jeffery said, refusing to talk. He kept his head down, silently eating.
Donovan figured asking Chloe wouldn't help either; it was probably related to Chloe. He stepped out of their private dining room and called Cynthia in the hallway to get the scoop.
When Cynthia got Donovan's call, she was so happy her voice shook. "You're in Pearl Peak City?"
"Yeah, just got here," Donovan said.
Cynthia spilled everything, saying Jeffery had stolen Chloe's project and handed it to his advisor, Oscar. Oscar exposed him, and now Jeffery felt he couldn't stay with Oscar anymore. It was awkward with Chloe too, so he wanted to join the military.
Cynthia left out the part about her visiting Chloe's house. She just repeated the version going around school, making it seem like she was just an innocent bystander.
'Yep, it's definitely about Chloe,' Donovan thought. But he couldn't believe Jeffery would do something like that; it didn't add up.
After the meal, Donovan asked Maya to take Francis back to Kenneth's house first, and then he headed to Chloe's place.
Chloe had no classes that day and was at home revising her project, going over the original content again, as she was afraid that there was something wrong with the content.
When there was a knock on the door, she was wearing glasses and looked tired as she went to open it.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, surprised to see Donovan at her door, pushing her glasses up.
"You look more and more like a scholar," Donovan said, walking in.
Chloe went to pour him some water, thinking, 'He must be here because of Jeffery. Jeffery wants to join the military, and Maya must have found out. I don't agree with Jeffery joining the military, but he's very stubborn.'
"Do you know Jeffery wants to join the military?" Donovan asked, sitting on the sofa.
Chloe placed the water in front of him. "Yeah, I heard."
"And you're just letting him go?" he asked.
Chloe frowned slightly, feeling inexplicably irritated. "It's his decision; I can't control him. He's not a kid anymore. Why are you telling me this? Shouldn't you be the one persuading him?"
"Maya is crying at home."
"What does that have to do with me?" Chloe snapped, feeling a sudden surge of anger for no reason.
