Chapter 277 His Child
"Chloe, this time, I’m here to take you home. After all, the child in your belly is Brayden's. Some people, who aren't the biological father, should stop trying to claim you. Keeping you here forcibly is unreasonable! You should be with the real father of your child," Maria said, clearly directing her words at Donovan.
But Donovan didn't bother to argue with Maria. He merely lowered his head and brushed his forehead, completely disregarding her words.
"Mrs. Perez," Chloe's mind was in turmoil, unsure of what to say.
"Brayden told me that the child in your belly was conceived when he first arrived in Suncrest State. It's undoubtedly his. I may have had prejudices against you before, but please forgive me and come home with me," Maria said, patting Chloe's hand.
"Brayden told you this?" Chloe asked Maria with a slight frown.
"Yes, absolutely. The last time he proposed to you, it didn't work out for some reason. This time, he sent me. Chloe, please agree," Maria continued.
Chloe was carrying twins, which was incredibly fortunate.
Even though she had her reservations about Chloe, thinking she was being indiscreet, the children were the Perez family's, and Brayden was very fond of Chloe.
"I..." Chloe lowered her head, playing with her hands. "Can I think about it for a few days?"
Chloe knew Donovan would never let her go, but she didn't want to reject Maria outright, so she found a way to delay.
"How many days are you thinking about?" Maria asked.
Chloe held up three fingers. "Three days."
" Alright, I'll come back in three days for your answer. Some people need to recognize the truth about themselves. They know in their heart how Chloe's mother died. No one would stay with their enemy. This is confinement," Maria glanced at Donovan, then left.
Maria's mention of "Chloe's mother" stirred something in Chloe's heart.
After seeing Maria to the door, Chloe returned to the sofa and sat down, still feeling emotionless.
"When was the first time Brayden came to Suncrest State?" Donovan asked, sitting on a single sofa, leaning to one side, reading a book, and speaking casually.
They had been sitting in the living room reading since they got up in the morning, in complete silence.
Of course, it wasn't early when they got up.
Earlier, Maya had been busy in the kitchen, making rustling noises. In the living room, Chloe and Donovan were reading, with only the sound of turning pages. The bright sunshine outside made Chloe feel that such days were peaceful and serene, the essence of what one seeks in life.
"I forgot; it wasn't long after I went to Verdania," Chloe replied.
"Before your exam?" Donovan asked again, continuing to read and turn pages, as if he didn't care about the matter at all.
"Yes."
She now feared anyone mentioning Amelia's matter. Whenever it was brought up, she felt anxious and conflicted. Amelia was killed by him, yet she lived in his house, carrying his child.
Donovan was now ninety-five percent sure these two children were his.
According to Brayden, Chloe's child was conceived before the exam, but Donovan had ruled that out. Before the exam, she wasn't pregnant. After the exam, she lived with the Blake family, with no chance to be with Brayden. That time they ate pizza, Maya said she was pregnant.
Donovan now realized that Chloe's exclamation of "how could it be" wasn't to cover up having an illegitimate child but a genuine surprise; she didn't know she was pregnant.
So, the only explanation was that she conceived the day before the exam.
It was his child!
The reason for the ninety-five percent hope was that he wanted the remaining five percent to be confirmed by Chloe herself!
Donovan glanced at Chloe. She sat there, playing with her fingers, looking conflicted.
"What's wrong?" he asked slowly.
Donovan's expression was unusually gentle, but Chloe didn't notice at all.
