Chapter 146 He Stayed, He Admitted Defeat
Chloe had just come out of the bathroom when Donovan swept her off her feet and carried her into the bedroom. Her heart skipped a beat. Donovan playfully nuzzled her chest before kicking the door shut and tossing her onto the bed, pinning her down.
"I have dark circles," Chloe remarked, breathless.
"So what?" Donovan's gaze was intense.
"You can't keep me up every night. I have a career," Chloe reminded him.
"I didn't bring protection today," Donovan whispered in her ear, his breath sending shivers down her spine. He thought, ’If it happens, it happens.’ He had accepted the reality of their marriage.
"I have it," Chloe said, producing a box of condoms she had bought earlier.
Donovan smirked. "I thought you weren't interested. Seems like you were prepared."
"Don't stay up too late," Chloe pleaded. Donovan turned off the light.
Chloe's bed, an old wooden frame, creaked with their movements. It was smaller than Donovan's, but it brought them closer. Chloe could smell Donovan's masculine scent, making her blush.
Afterward, Chloe's heart raced, and she couldn't sleep. Feeling suffocated, she got up, went to the window, and opened the curtains. The moonlight revealed her silhouette, captivating Donovan.
"The smaller room has its advantages," he remarked. The distance between the bed and the window at the hillside villa was vast. Donovan had experienced infatuations, but nothing like this.
"What?" Chloe, unable to sleep, asked from the bed.
Donovan leaned in, "Your family's house is nice."
"My mom loves it too. My dad used to be an engineer at the factory, and they got this house. They always lived here, except when Jacob was born, and I guess when I was..." Chloe paused, realizing Amelia had never mentioned her birth. At that time, Jacob had just started junior high, staying at the dormitory, and only coming home once a month. Then, one day, Chloe suddenly appeared in the family.
"And then?" Donovan inquired.
"What about my dad?" Chloe wondered if he had discovered something. But then she realized that neither she nor Amelia had said anything, so how could he know?
Chloe continued, "My dad found it hard to make ends meet with the factory's salary, so he went into business as a project manager. Then there was an accident. Let's not talk about it."
Donovan fell silent, his emotions for Chloe a tangled mess. He couldn't discern which was stronger: his love, gratitude, or resentment.
The next day, Layla made breakfast. "This is the best we can do. Donovan, please don't mind," Amelia said.
"It's fine," Donovan replied, sipping his soup. Chloe noticed how well Donovan and Amelia got along, as if they shared an unspoken understanding.
