Chapter 387 You're Too Stubborn
Chloe glanced around her room and said, "Scholars always face hardship. Studying is tough, and life isn't easy. If you live in luxury, you might forget your goals. My grandpa's place wasn't fancy, but he was a great scholar. Wade picked this place because it's close to work. We don't see anything wrong with it."
Donovan's view of her shifted with those few words. He walked towards her slowly. Chloe's heart started racing. The alcohol was kicking in, and her face turned red.
"What are you afraid of?" he asked.
"Afraid? Why would I be afraid?" Chloe tried to sound relaxed. She walked to the window and drew the curtains, worried the men in black suits might be watching, which could spell trouble for both Donovan and Francis.
"Why are you drawing the curtains? You just can't wait for it, huh?" Donovan teased, knowing someone was watching her.
Chloe's room was small. After drawing the curtains, she walked past Donovan, who sniffed the air.
"You've been drinking?" he asked.
"Yeah." Chloe sat wearily on the bed.
"Who with?"
"A friend, you..." Chloe started to say, "You don't know," but remembered he knew Cynthia. She didn't want him to know Cynthia was also in Verdania.
"Man or woman?" Donovan asked casually, looking around her room with interest.
"Woman. Why are you in Verdania?" Chloe asked.
"I missed you." He finished looking around. There were no signs of another man. Her scattered books showed she was a diligent student.
Chloe's face turned slightly red.
"Why didn't you come back during Dreamscape Day?" he asked, sitting down.
"I'm busy with studies."
"You have time to drink but not to visit Francis?" Donovan sounded annoyed.
Chloe felt guilty and moved further onto the bed.
"The person after you is Pamela," Donovan said. "I've dealt with her. You can go home without worry now."
Chloe sobered up instantly. "How do you know?"
Donovan smiled faintly. "So it's true. I thought you were heartless enough to abandon me and Francis."
"How do you know it's her? I have no grudge against her. Why would she target me?" Chloe was confused, recalling seeing Pamela at Whispering Pines Inn. Pamela's elegance made it hard to believe she had a dark side.
"I had someone investigate. I warned her." Donovan smirked.
Chloe's heart raced, trying to process everything. What seemed impossible for her was a small matter for Donovan. She regretted listening to the man in the black suit and impulsively coming to Verdania. She had always wanted to study there, but Donovan had disagreed. Now, she couldn't even go home. She realized she had underestimated Donovan's power. She thought if those people could make him lose five million dollars, they could take more from him.
"Did you go abroad for me?" Donovan stared into Chloe's eyes.
Chloe's words were evasive, her eyes darting. "You're overthinking it. I've always wanted to study in Verdania, but you never let me. You're the one who didn't let me come back!"
"Now it's allowed. You're too stubborn!" Donovan said.
"I want to see Francis! I want to video call with Francis!" Chloe demanded.
Just then, there was a knock on Chloe's door.
