Chapter 512 She Left, She Came
When Chloe got to Stellar Corp, she kicked things off with a meeting with the staff to chat about some internal decisions. After that, everyone got all excited about picking out houses, and Chloe couldn't help but feel a bit jealous.
"I want the east unit on the eighth floor," the legal director said.
Timothy shook his head. "Sorry, that one's already taken."
"By who?" the legal director asked, "That's a big place."
"Who else? Mr. Blake," Timothy replied.
Chloe's heart skipped a beat. 'Donovan bought a place here too?' she thought.
"Mr. Blake didn't pay for this house, right?" the legal director joked.
"Of course not. Mr. Blake's the client; he paid to build himself a house. Why would he pay again? Both of these units are his," Timothy said, like it was no big deal. "And yeah, I don't have to pay for a house either."
Everyone went quiet. Comparing themselves to others could be such a downer.
"Chloe, aren't you buying?" Timothy asked.
Chloe looked a bit awkward. "No, I'm not buying."
Charles just gave Chloe a quick glance.
After the meeting, Charles saw Chloe off and then headed to a hotel. He called Donovan, "Donovan, did you see how bummed Chloe looked when she was at the house picking meeting today? Why don't you lend her some money?"
"No," Donovan snapped. He was still mad at Chloe; she had called out Derek's name in her sleep and secretly went on a date. She probably didn't even know that Donovan already knew Derek had been to Pearl Peak City.
'When it comes to borrowing money, she thinks of me. I am not her ATM,' Donovan thought.
Back home, Chloe was still a bit regretful, but she didn't have the money to buy a house, so she let it go. She started prepping lessons for the next day.
The next day after class, she assigned her students a five-thousand-word paper due next week. The topic was Determining the Validity of Trust Contracts.
After class, Chloe took a nap and then got back to her project. She was almost done with it; Isabel and Saoirse, her two grad students, were just handling minor tasks. Today, Chloe had them submit their work, and she organized it, finding a few loose ends to tie up.
Around five, Charles called her, saying he was heading back to Maple Valley and wanted to treat her to a meal before leaving. Chloe didn't turn him down; he was her former teacher, and having a meal was no big deal. Plus, she was tired and wanted to get out and clear her head.
Seeing that the project was almost done, Chloe saved her work, left the computer on, and got ready to go out.
Just then, Jeffery showed up. He said there was a book, an original edition, the only copy in the school, that Chloe had borrowed. He wanted to take a look at it, not take it away, just read it for a while and then return it to Chloe.
Chloe thought, 'Jeffery is quite the scholar, knowing what's in this book. And since he works in the library, it's not surprising he knows the book is with me.'
Charles called again, and Chloe said to Jeffery, "You can read it here. Just lock the door when you're done. I have an appointment and need to go."
"Aren't you afraid of things being stolen?" Jeffery laughed.
"I have nothing in my room, just a bunch of books. Go ahead and steal them. I'd be happy if you did," Chloe said as she left.
Jeffery quietly stayed there, taking photos of the book's contents to prep for writing his paper. Then Cynthia showed up, supposedly looking for Chloe but really looking for Donovan.
