Chapter 224 Not Like a Loving Couple at All
Tonight, Donovan transformed into a savage beast, leaving numerous marks on Chloe's body. He caressed Chloe's smooth and flat abdomen, which showed no signs of pregnancy. It was clear that the child was not his, as they would have been much older by now.
After they concluded their encounter in the wee hours of the night, Chloe was drenched in sweat.
"Mr. Blake, don't forget about the divorce." Chloe lay on the bed, exhausted, with her eyes closed. She was sweating all over, but her mind was unusually clear.
Donovan was already dressing himself when he announced, "Tomorrow night, I'll be serving you with the divorce papers."
With those words, he got up and exited the room, leaving behind a heavy silence. Chloe remained lying on the bed, her breathing heavy.
She had managed to secure the divorce papers this time, unexpected though it was.
Donovan had not been part of her strategy this time around, but Matthew's unexpected arrival had thrown a wrench into Chloe's plans.
Chloe feared that Matthew might spill the beans to Donovan about the evening's events, possibly leading Donovan to mistakenly believe she was pregnant.
Worried about facing Donovan's inquiries about infidelity, Chloe hastily packed her bags, planning to switch hotels for the night to avoid a confrontation.
She dreaded the idea of encountering Donovan, fearing it would only complicate matters and cause heartache.
As she made her way down the hotel corridor with her luggage, she passed by a cleaning lady and caught sight of a discarded pregnancy test stick in the trash can.
Realizing that she couldn't run forever, Chloe knew Donovan would eventually track her down. She couldn't bear to be in his presence – he was her nemesis, leaving her breathless and haunted by nightmares at the mere thought of him.
He might inquire about Sofia's whereabouts or if she was expecting a child. Sofia, being timid and anxious, would disclose everything to Donovan.
To avoid any complications, she discreetly obtained someone else's pregnancy test. She made the decision to deceive Donovan into believing she was pregnant.
Donovan, a prominent figure in Maple Valley, would not want to be associated with a woman carrying another man's child, leading to an inevitable divorce.
She was able to achieve her goal. Donovan may have already been disenchanted with her.
Her exam was scheduled for three in the afternoon, and she spent the entire morning resting in the hotel.
In the afternoon, she walked into the exam room feeling completely confident. Unless something unexpected happened, she was sure she would pass the auditor exam. Later, back at the hotel, she received a call from Donovan.
In the past, Chloe had always ignored Donovan's calls, but this time, she decided to pick up.
"Come home to pick up the divorce agreement and take a visit at Kenneth. He misses you," he said.
"Okay," Chloe replied.
Chloe made an effort to dress nicely, attempting to appear poised and composed like a lady.
She hailed a taxi to Hillside Villa where Kenneth had been waiting in front of the door since early morning upon hearing of Chloe's return. Seeing Kenneth, Chloe was taken aback.
After just a few months, Kenneth had lost all his hair and appeared significantly aged. Describing him as old was an understatement.
"Kenneth, how did you end up like this?" Chloe held Kenneth's hand.
Kenneth's hand felt like a withered tree.
"Aging is a natural process, just like Chloe rising like the morning sun," Kenneth said to Chloe. "With you back, Kenneth can rest assured."
"Kenneth, I'm sorry," Chloe said.
" Don't say that, Chloe," Kenneth said. "I'm hanging by a thread. I can't let you both put your futures on hold for me; that would be selfish. I heard you completed your final exam. How did it go?"
"Pretty good. Barring any surprises, I should pass," Chloe forced a smile and said.
"Looks like we have a new auditor in the family," Kenneth remarked as he gently patted Chloe's hand. The two of them carried on their conversation from outside the door and into the living room. Donovan, seated in the living room engrossed in a book, glanced up as Chloe entered and quipped, "Back already?”
"Yes," Chloe replied.
They appeared to share an unspoken agreement. Chloe feigned surprise at seeing Donovan for the first time since returning from abroad, and Donovan played along as if it was his initial encounter with her as well.
However, their cold dynamic did not reflect the affectionate bond of a loving couple.
