Chapter 169 Mr. Montgomery, I am Mia
Grace held the scorching gift in her hand, unsure whether to accept it or discard it.
She decided to keep it for now and return it to Xavier when the opportunity arose.
Grace intended to head back, but noticing that the business hall was still open, she walked over. "I'd like to get a new SIM card," she said.
Grace quickly got a new card and, once she returned home, took out the gilded business card and saved both of Xavier's numbers.
It was only now that Grace realized the number she had saved earlier was Xavier's private number.
No wonder he always received her messages promptly. After saving the numbers, Grace took out the box Xavier had placed in her bag.
It was a red box adorned with lifelike carvings, the birds on it seemingly ready to take flight. The box alone looked incredibly valuable.
Grace opened it carefully, revealing a pair of earrings wrapped in velvet. The craftsmanship was unique, with golden threads encasing a red stone.
Upon closer inspection, each thread seemed to have intricate patterns, and the earrings appeared to have engravings inside. The design was opulent yet tasteful, truly stunning.
Grace was captivated at first sight, her eyes filled with amazement. When Xavier had put them on her, she hadn't seen them clearly. Now, she realized just how beautiful they truly were.
As beautiful as they were, she knew they didn't belong to her. They were too precious, unlike the painting she could donate to a museum. The earrings would have to be returned to Xavier.
If he insisted she keep them, Grace would find a way to purchase them at their original price.
Grace had no idea how much they cost, so she searched online but found nothing. She sent a message to Angela: [Angela, I saw a pair of earrings online that are particularly beautiful. Do you have any friends who know about jewelry and can help me check the price?]
Angela: [No problem, send me a photo.]
Grace took a photo of the earrings, ensuring nothing else was in the frame.
Angela: [These earrings are indeed beautiful, Grace. Are you thinking of buying them?]
Grace: [I'm just asking out of curiosity.]
Angela: [Alright, I'll ask around for you!]
With no immediate response from Angela, Grace sat for a while before taking her pajamas into the bathroom.
After a shower, she found a new message on her phone. It was from Xavier, simply stating: [Arrived.]
It seemed he had reached home safely. Grace typed a quick reply: [Okay, rest early.]
But as soon as she sent the message, her phone vibrated with an incoming call. Seeing the name, she nearly dropped her phone.
Why was Xavier calling her at this late hour? Had she left something in his car? Grace answered, "Xavier?"
There was no sound from the other end. Grace checked her phone; the call was connected.
"Did you dial the wrong number? Or is your phone broken?" she muttered.
A light cough came from the other end. "No, it was a mistake," Xavier said.
He had intended to say something but couldn't find the words. He wanted to tell Grace he hadn't gone shopping with Stephanie, but then he wondered why he felt the need to explain himself to Grace.
"Alright then," Grace said.
It was indeed a mistake; otherwise, why would Xavier call her?
"If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now. Good night, Xavier."
"I met someone in Oakworth whose voice sounds a lot like yours. Listening to you now, it seems even more similar," said Xavier.
"Really?" Grace's eyes widened, surprised that Xavier would bring this up suddenly.
"Maybe it's just a coincidence. There are many people with similar voices."
Xavier's light laugh came through the phone. "You both say the same things."
Grace's heart skipped a beat, but she pretended to know nothing. "Really? She said the same thing? That is quite a coincidence."
Hearing the forced laughter on the other end, Xavier quietly listened to Grace's act.
He didn't mind stoking the fire a bit more, continuing, "But that person said she would contact me, and I haven't heard from her since. I wonder if she broke her promise."
Grace fell silent. She had indeed hesitated about whether to message Xavier with her new number. She figured that since she had returned to Skigeth, she might not run into Xavier again and didn't really need to message him.
But the next moment, Grace heard Xavier say. "But it's okay. If I want to find someone, it's relatively easy. If she doesn't contact me, I'll just have to find her myself."
"She might be busy," Grace said. If Xavier decided to investigate her, he would surely find out!
Xavier seemed to agree with Grace's reasoning. "Yeah, you're right. I'll wait a couple more days before introducing you two."
Grace had no desire to introduce herself to herself; she feared it would only scare Xavier.
"Rest early," Xavier said from the other end.
Hearing this, Grace spoke with a voice that took on a hint of relief. "Good night, Xavier."
"Yeah." Before Xavier could say good night, Grace had already quickly hung up the phone.
Seeing this heartless act from Grace, Xavier merely smirked. He wasn't often hung up on, but he wasn't angry.
Grace was nearly scared to death; no matter what she did, it seemed terrible. She decided to contact Xavier tomorrow instead.
Although Grace had been on a business trip for the past few days, she had gotten enough sleep and wasn't very tired.
Feeling energized, she made a bold decision to shift her work focus to another city.
Marrying Ryan was out of the question, but Zach had already discussed her wedding date, leaving her with little time.
With no attachments keeping her here—her mother gone and this place not feeling like home—she was determined to leave.
Grace was preparing and investigating which place would be most suitable.
Oakworth was undoubtedly a good option, but Xavier's influence was strong there. If she truly wanted to make a clean break, she knew she couldn't have any further contact with Xavier.
For her, there was still time, and she didn't want to be so passive when the time came.
The next day, Grace went to the studio.
During the day, she used the new number she had bought yesterday to draft a message but hesitated to send it.
Thinking about what Xavier had said, if she didn't take the initiative, he might really investigate her identity.
But why did he want her contact information when they had so little interaction?
Grace wrestled with her thoughts all afternoon and finally, by evening, sent the message.
[Mr. Montgomery, I am Mia.]
