Chapter 608 Developing Doubts

"I just want you to have it. If it gets lost, then it gets lost."

Even though it was important to Xavier, he always felt like it was meant to be with Grace.

In Grace's hands, he felt a sense of peace.

Since Xavier gave it to her, Grace accepted it.

"I'll just keep it at home. You can get it anytime you need it."

When she got home, Grace put the crystal away, placing it next to her mom's crystal.

Though it didn't look particularly valuable, it was just as important to Grace.

After putting it away, Grace started searching around the house.

She pulled out a big box filled with her mom's things, rummaging through it but finding nothing.

Sitting amidst the pile, she looked up at Xavier, puzzled. "What do you think Jared wants?"

Xavier shook his head, equally confused. Jared wasn't short on money, so what could he possibly need?

Unable to find anything, Grace had to give up for now.

After putting everything back, Grace went to the hospital to see Chase.

Chase's health was deteriorating, and he was rarely conscious.

With limited visiting hours in the ICU, Grace stayed with Chase for a while, reassuring him that everything would be okay as long as he cooperated with the treatment.

Seeing Chase in such a state, Grace hesitated about agreeing to Jared's demands. If Jared could provide the antidote to save Chase, maybe she should let him have what he wanted.

She had only recently reunited with Chase, and their family had just come together. How could this happen now?

But Grace also worried that if Jared got what he wanted, it might endanger more people.

"Grace," Chase said, gripping her hand tightly, his eyes filled with reluctance.

"I'm here, Grandpa!"

"Grace, you have to take care of yourself, really take care."

Chase's biggest concern was Grace. He had only recently found his precious granddaughter and felt he owed her so much.

Even though he knew Grace was doing well, he couldn't rest easy without seeing it for himself.

"I won't be okay, Grandpa. You need to be here to watch over me, to keep me in line. Without you, I won't be okay at all. Promise me you'll stay with me, okay?"

Chase looked at her, his mouth opening slightly. "Okay, I promise."

While Grace was talking with Chase, Xavier received a phone call outside.

"Xavier, help me, help me!" Brittany's voice came through the phone.

"Xavier, I don't know what I did wrong. Someone kidnapped me and wants to kill me. Please, help me."

Xavier frowned, ready to hang up. "The person who kidnapped you is Jared Peterson. You can go to him."

"Xavier, please, remember how I saved you before. You can't just ignore me. Have you forgotten what I did for you? If it weren't for me, you would have starved to death. I brought you food every day, meals I prepared myself. Without me, you wouldn't be here today!"

Hearing Brittany's words, something flickered in Xavier's eyes.

Prepared herself?

When she brought him food back then, she didn't say that.

He remembered the chatty girl saying, "Our cook made too much, and we can't finish it at home. You should eat it."

Xavier said, "You made it yourself? That's really thoughtful, even arranging the food in such cute shapes."

Thinking she had a chance, Brittany quickly agreed, "Yes, yes, I made it all."

After that, Xavier fell silent, making Brittany uneasy.

Would Xavier save her or not?

Brittany continued, "Xavier, I haven't bothered you all these years or asked for anything in return. Now I really have no other choice. I don't want to die. Please, for the sake of those meals, help me."

"Can you really watch me die? If I die, I won't let you and Grace off, even as a ghost."

Brittany's pitiful voice came through the phone, sounding extremely aggrieved.

She kept mentioning the past to make Xavier feel guilty, hoping he wouldn't be able to refuse.

"I did so many good deeds as a child, saved so many people, and this is my reward? What was the point of saving them?"

Something flickered in Xavier's eyes. "I'll go find Jared."

Hearing this, Brittany finally breathed a sigh of relief. "I'll be waiting."

If Xavier were willing to save her, Jared would have to get what he wanted first. That would mean her task was complete.

...

Visiting hours ended, and Grace left the room. She composed herself before coming out, not wanting Xavier to worry.

Seeing Xavier on the phone at the door, Grace, like Xavier, didn't interrupt.

When Xavier hung up and saw her, Grace walked over.

"How's your grandpa doing?"

Grace shook her head. "Not good."

It looked bad. Though Chase had said a lot, it was clear his condition was unstable.

Because of Chase, Grace had no appetite. Even though Xavier cooked dinner himself, she barely ate.

Xavier kept putting food in her bowl, and before she knew it, it was piled high.

"I can't eat that much." Looking at the overflowing bowl, she thought, even though she was pregnant, this was too much.

"Eat as much as you can." Xavier also served her some nutritious soup.

After the poisoning incident with Chase, Xavier didn't trust anyone else to cook. Only by doing it himself could he be sure the ingredients were safe.

Grace wondered if Xavier would start growing his vegetables if they had a garden.

After drinking some soup and eating half a bowl, Grace pushed the rest to Xavier.

After dinner, they washed up together and lay in bed, holding each other.

That night, Grace had a dream. In it, she seemed to fall into endless darkness. In that space, she was alone, with a large screen in front of her, showing scenes from her life, with her family and Xavier.

Grace reached out to touch them, but they shattered into pieces, like a dream. The darkness she was in felt like reality, an endless void where she was alone, falling endlessly.

There was no family, no Xavier by her side.
