Chapter 350 Buying a Gift for Xavier
Grace was racking her brain, trying to figure out what gift to get.
But she had no clue what Xavier needed; and he didn't seem to have any specific interests.
Just when she was about to give up, her phone buzzed. It was Angela calling.
"Angela!" Grace answered quickly. They hadn't talked in days.
Angela was always swamped with her business, and Grace was in the same boat, so their chats were usually short and sweet.
Angela's voice came through, "Grace, what are you up to? When are you coming back to Skigeth? I'm so bored here. How about I come to Oakworth to see you? Maybe I should move my studio there, and we can start a company together."
"Sure, when are you thinking of coming?" Grace replied.
She'd be thrilled if Angela came over.
"In the next couple of days?" Angela suggested.
"Then you'll probably be alone in Oakworth," Grace said.
"Why?" Angela asked, puzzled.
"Iris just sealed a deal, and I have to go abroad. I'll be gone for a few days," Grace explained.
"Grace, that's awesome! You landed an international contract so fast!" Angela was genuinely happy for her. As a good friend, she wanted to see Grace succeed and then maybe help her out too!
"Honestly, it's all thanks to Xavier. He helped me with the project proposal. I'm still trying to figure out how to thank him properly," Grace added.
She was still stumped on how to show her gratitude.
Angela joked, "That's easy. You are the best gift. Just clean yourself up and get into Mr. Montgomery's bed!"
"Stop it," Grace blushed.
Angela was getting more and more outrageous. Grace wanted to thank Xavier in a proper way.
Angela said, "I'll take care of the gift. I guarantee Mr. Montgomery will love it. Send me your address. I'll place the order right away!"
With that, Angela hung up before Grace could ask what the gift was. But since it was from Angela, Grace still wanted to get her own gift to thank Xavier.
She planned to pick out a gift for Xavier later and then cook him a nice meal.
Living with Xavier, Grace noticed that although he wasn't picky about food, he barely touched takeout.
But if she cooked, he'd eat a bit more. His stomach wasn't great, and he needed to take care of it.
Grace left work early to hit the mall in search of a gift.
She immediately liked a pair of cufflinks and a tie. The salesperson came over and said, "Miss, are you buying this for your husband? This set pairs exceptionally well and is particularly fitting."
The word "husband" made Grace a bit embarrassed.
She and Xavier weren't in that kind of relationship yet. She said, "It's for my boyfriend."
"Then this is perfect. This set is simple and elegant, with a deep color that's quite sophisticated. It's a global limited edition, and we only have this one set in our store. Many people like it, but it's a bit pricey."
Grace liked it and didn't care about the price, saying, "Wrap it up for me."
The salesperson was surprised by how straightforward she was. She didn't even ask for a discount or the price.
The salesperson, still a bit shocked, reminded her, "Miss, this cufflink and tie set costs five hundred thousand dollars."
Grace nodded, "That's fine, put it on my card."
After buying the gift, Grace felt like she was starting to understand Xavier a bit better.
It wasn't about paying him back; she just genuinely wanted to get him something nice.
She realized she might have been wrong before.
Like, if Xavier didn't accept her gift, she'd be really upset. And last time on the yacht, she didn't accept his gift either.
Grace's heart ached a little. She missed Xavier.
He was probably busy, but she called him anyway, just to hear his voice.
At the DG Group, the conference room was tense. A project Xavier hadn't closely monitored had gone south, and today's feedback was terrible. Xavier was furious.
No one dared to speak or even breathe loudly.
The project was important, and Xavier valued it highly. But he hadn't been in Oakworth recently, so he hadn't kept a close eye on it.
Now that Xavier was pointing out their basic mistakes, no one dared to argue.
Xavier didn't speak, and neither did they.
At this rate, the meeting would probably drag on for hours, well past quitting time.
Then, a phone started ringing.
Everyone tensed up. They all knew Xavier's rule about meetings; the biggest no-no was a phone ringing and interrupting the meeting. Now that a phone was ringing, it was a big deal.
As everyone sat upright, cold sweat on their foreheads, looking at each other, waiting for someone to admit whose phone was ringing, they saw Xavier pick up his phone.
It was Xavier's phone ringing!
"Sorry, I need to take this call." With that, Xavier walked out of the conference room with his phone.
His phone was usually on silent because he didn't like being interrupted during meetings.
But Grace's number had a special ringtone, set to ring no matter what.
So when he saw Grace's name, Xavier stepped out to answer, "Grace, what's up?"
His voice was still so deep, and hearing it through the phone made Grace's heart flutter.
When others called her name, it didn't feel special, but when Xavier said it, it felt different.
Grace said, "Nothing much, just wanted to ask when you'll be off work. Let's have dinner at home tonight!"
This conversation made Grace feel like a wife asking her husband when he'd be home.
A warm feeling spread through Xavier's chest; he responded, "Okay, I'll come home early."
"Then I won't keep you. Go on with your business. Bye!" With that, Grace hung up.
For some reason, her heart was pounding, and she was blushing.
Just a few words, and Xavier's mood had lifted significantly.
When he returned to the conference room, there was a faint smile on his lips. The others thought they were seeing things. Was Xavier smiling?
Xavier apologized, "Sorry for the interruption. I'll dock my salary for this month as a penalty."
The others were silent.
Xavier was tough on himself, docking his salary just like that.
