Chapter 220 Who I'm With Is None of Your Business
"Ryan, do you even care about me? Grace hit me and shoved me to the ground," Wendy said, feeling hurt.
Ryan seemed unfazed. He only wanted to know one thing. "Wendy, you've been through a lot. Now, who was the guy with Grace?"
He needed to understand why Grace suddenly wanted to break off their engagement. He thought she used to like him and was just jealous. Now, it seemed she might be into someone else.
"It was Xavier," Wendy replied.
"Xavier?" Ryan was taken aback. "Is Grace with Xavier?"
Ryan had noticed Grace spending a lot of time with Xavier but dismissed it. Now, it seemed real.
"Are you sure you saw right?" Ryan asked.
The video only showed Wendy and Grace; it didn't capture the guy in the car. Ryan thought Wendy might be mistaken.
"How could I be wrong? The car window was down, Ryan. Why are you asking?"
"Nothing." Ryan hung up.
Wendy thought he was acting weird. Why was he so concerned about Grace? Was he planning something?
Ryan ended the call, still puzzled about Grace and Xavier's relationship. 'What's going on between them?' he wondered.
Grace drove off with Xavier. Glancing at him in the rearview mirror, she asked, "Xavier, are you not actually drunk?"
Xavier's sharp look at Wendy didn't seem drunk at all.
"Yeah," Xavier admitted, knowing he couldn't hide it.
"Why?" She didn't get why he pretended to be drunk.
"Nothing, just tired and didn't want to drink anymore," Xavier replied calmly.
Grace nodded, understanding. Victor's drinking habits were hard to keep up with.
"Should I take you back to the Bameran villa?" Grace offered.
"Okay," Xavier replied, rubbing his temples, looking genuinely uncomfortable.
Grace drove him back to the villa and briefly vanished.
Xavier thought she had left, but she returned with a bowl of soup, insisting he drink it to avoid a headache.
Xavier took the bowl and drank it without a word.
Seeing his discomfort, Grace asked, "Feeling nauseous?"
Xavier shook his head. Grace persisted, "Want to lie down and rest?"
Xavier stayed silent, just looking at Grace. His usually cold eyes were now softer, his long eyelashes hiding most of his emotions. His deep gaze was unreadable to Grace.
A sudden jolt ran through Grace, like a faint electric current, making her feel tingly. She quickly looked away, finding the lights too bright.
"You should rest. I won't leave. I'll wait until you fall asleep," Grace reassured him. Remembering how he had taken care of her before, she felt it was only fair to do the same.
"Okay." Xavier nodded. After a quick shower, he settled into bed.
Grace sat beside him, reading two books she had picked up. Fatigue crept up on her, and she dozed off, leaning against the bed.
As Xavier lay there, he opened his eyes and looked at Grace. After a moment, he got up.
A short while later, Xavier gently lifted Grace and placed her on the bed.
Xavier, struggling with sleep disorders, stayed awake the whole time.
Maybe it was the milk Grace had earlier, but a faint scent of it lingered around her. As Xavier held her, he felt a calm wash over him, clearing his mind. Eventually, he too fell asleep, finding peace in the moment.
Grace woke up the next morning, feeling something was off. She was alone in bed. How did she end up there? She remembered planning to leave after Xavier fell asleep but must have dozed off. Xavier must have carried her to bed.
She glanced at the bathroom, but Xavier wasn't there. Next to her were clean clothes in her size. After freshening up, she went to the front hall and found out Xavier had already left.
"Mr. Montgomery went to the office," Kieran informed her.
It was Monday, so Xavier had to work. Grace left the Bameran villa in a good mood and headed to work. She stopped by a pharmacy to get a morning-after pill since it hadn't been seventy-two hours yet.
With the engagement off, Grace felt free from the burden of leaving her company unattended. But she stayed cautious, knowing Patrick might still cause trouble.
Feeling lighter, Grace approached her work with joy. She was so happy she treated the whole company to a fancy dinner and an even fancier afternoon tea.
As the workday ended, Grace sent the restaurant address to her employees, telling them to start without her. She had a few tasks to finish up first.
Grace was different from other bosses; she didn't exploit her employees. Even if they worked overtime, they got triple pay and better benefits. Everyone liked her because she treated them like friends.
After finishing her work, Grace closed her laptop and left the office. The restaurant was nearby, so she decided to walk.
Just as she locked the door and turned around, she saw someone behind her, startling her.
"Grace, I need to talk to you," Ryan said, looking rough. His stubble was unshaven, and his clothes looked days old. If he kept this up, he'd start looking like a homeless guy.
He seemed exhausted, with deep-set eyes.
"I told you last time, we have nothing to talk about," Grace said coldly.
"We were engaged. Do you have to be like this?" Ryan asked urgently. "Were you with Xavier last night?"
"Ryan, we're not engaged anymore. Who I'm with is none of your business!" Grace's voice was firm.
Ryan felt a surge of indescribable discomfort.
"So, are you with Xavier? Did you betray me long ago?"
"Are you crazy? Get lost!" Grace didn't want to waste words and walked away.
Ryan caught up to her. "Just tell me, did you break off the engagement because you have feelings for Xavier?"
He was desperate. "Do you think he's any good? Do you think he really likes you? Grace, do you think you can marry Xavier? Look in the mirror. Xavier has lovers who are a thousand times prettier than you!"
Neither Ryan nor Grace noticed a white car parked nearby, its headlights flashing. The driver was watching them, taking swigs from a liquor bottle.
