Chapter 379 Grace, What Makes You Think I Would Be Interested in You?

Xavier, who typically abhorred the scent of perfume, had actually applied some.

But Grace didn't care about that; she was more worried about Xavier.

"Xavier, why was your phone off the whole time? I was freaking out, thinking something happened to you. Don't do that again! Even if your phone's busted, you gotta call me first, got it?" Grace's voice was full of concern.

Xavier's body went rigid. Behind Grace, his hand shook, and he had to fight the urge to hug her.

It was Grace's scent, the one he cherished. His heart felt like it was in a vice, making it impossible to push her away.

Grace noticed it too. Normally, he would've already reached out to hug her.

She looked up at Xavier's chin.

His eyes were bloodshot, but his hair was perfectly styled, making him look like he was in decent shape.

Only then did Grace feel a bit relieved. "I got a..."

"That wasn't a scam call; it was me," Xavier's voice was almost icy.

Grace's body went stiff, staring at Xavier in disbelief.

"Since you're here, I'll say it again. We're done." This wasn't a discussion; it was a declaration. Xavier's tone was firm.

It hit Grace like a ton of bricks. Even though she'd heard it over the phone, hearing Xavier say it in person left her stunned.

Grace was in a daze for a moment, then whimpered, "Why?"

Before coming back to Oakworth, everything was fine. How did one trip change Xavier so much?

Xavier steeled himself and pushed Grace away.

He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, not daring to meet Grace's eyes.

Xavier picked up a cigarette, took one out, and lit it. He bit down on the cigarette, trying hard to keep it together. "No reason. I'm just tired of it. I don't want to be with you anymore. Is that so difficult to comprehend?"

Grace looked at his back. He was wearing a custom-made suit, still looking mature and composed, exuding a certain charm.

Grace walked over to him. Turning her head, she could see his strong jawline, and through the swirling smoke, she could vaguely see his furrowed brows.

Xavier had smoked too much, and his body reeked of it, so he borrowed some perfume from Mason to cover it up.

"You're not like this. That reason doesn't make any sense." Grace bit her lip, her eyes red.

Grace's stubborn nature wouldn't let her cry, even though she was hurting.

"You said I could end things whenever I wanted. Last time I was joking. This time, I'm not," Xavier said, his words cutting deep.

"We shouldn't have started in the first place. You were just a tool for me to get back at the Montgomery family. I admit, I kept you around longer because you looked good. Now that I've achieved my goal, there's no need to be with you anymore. I just don't want any drama since you're getting too attached. You can ask for anything: a car, a house, money. I can give it to you." Xavier spoke coldly, not daring to look into Grace's eyes.

The compensation he mentioned wasn't just talk. If Grace wanted it, the company could give it to her.

But Xavier knew Grace wouldn't want any of it.

"Are you serious?" Grace clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms to keep herself calm.

Xavier asked, "Which part are you talking about? The breakup or being with you? If it's the breakup, then yeah, I'm dead serious. If it's being with you, well, there was some acting involved. Honestly, it was just your body that caught my eye. Any other woman could do the same, maybe even better, at least they wouldn't cling to me."

Grace's heart felt like it was being ripped apart. She thought him introducing her to his friends meant he liked her and wanted to be with her.

She thought him going to Aetheria to find her meant he genuinely missed her.

Now Grace realized Xavier was a great actor.

Grace faltered, "You think me coming here today is… clingy?"

Xavier stubbed out his cigarette. The bloodshot in his eyes seemed to intensify, and his heart felt like it was being pricked by needles. "None of this matters anymore. I should have made myself clear. Whatever you want, go to Mason. If there's nothing else, you should go back to Skigeth."

Xavier acted extremely heartless. His profile was stern, looking unfeeling to an extreme.

Only now did Grace understand how heartless he could be, just as the impression about Xavier.

But Grace still didn't believe everything before was fake. Xavier's eyes had clearly shown affection for her; he did like her.

Grace felt as cold as if she were in an ice cellar. Given her personality, she wouldn't cling. She would let go decisively.

But she had feelings for Xavier and didn't want to give up so easily; she still wanted to give it a try.

Grace rushed over and hugged him from behind. "I don't believe you. I don't believe it was all a lie! Something happened. Something made you change. Tell me. Whatever it is, we can face it together."

Feeling the warmth on his back, Xavier's hand tightened at his side, his chest trembling with deep breaths. He used all his strength to force himself to stay calm.

Xavier placed his hand on hers, and Grace felt the coldness of Xavier's palm.

Even colder than his palm was Xavier's action. He gripped her wrist and pulled her hands away from his waist.

Xavier pushed Grace away entirely, looking at her coldly, as if she were a stranger.

His thin lips moved, and his voice was low, but his words were incredibly cruel: "What could have happened? Do you think this is a TV show, or do you think you're the main character? Grace, what makes you think someone like me would be interested in you?"

Grace's pupils contracted, and she took a step back.

The gulf between their social standing suddenly felt immense.

Grace's eyes were red, but she still forced a smile, though it was filled with too much emotion.

She had been uneasy since last night, and now, hearing Xavier's words, she hadn't even had the chance to tell him about the pregnancy before their relationship was sentenced to death by Xavier.

"I understand," Grace's voice was very soft.

She used all her strength to keep herself from collapsing.

'It's just a breakup; there's no need to make it too ugly.' Grace turned to leave, but then she heard Xavier's voice from behind.

"Wait." Xavier said.

Grace's steps halted. She turned around sharply, her eyes seemingly sparkling, with a stubborn look and a hint of hope.

She hoped he would tell her to stay, that it was all a terrible joke.
