Chapter 391 I'm Pursuing Grace
Grace had no clue what Sterling wanted from her, but since she had nothing better to do, she figured she might as well thank him for bringing her home last night.
She reheated the hangover soup, gulped it down, and felt a bit clearer, but her stomach was still doing somersaults.
Even though she hadn't thrown up after all that drinking last night, now she felt like she was gonna hurl. She rushed to the bathroom and let it all out.
After a quick wash and a shower to make sure she didn't reek, she got a message from Sterling telling her to come downstairs.
Downstairs, Sterling's car was parked right by the elevator. He got out and straightened himself up a bit.
Sterling had barely slept last night, dealing with the mess Xavier had caused. He glanced at a car parked not too far away and smirked.
In no time, Xavier got out of that car and walked up to Sterling. "What are you doing here?"
Sterling wasn't surprised to see Xavier at all. "Has our knight errant not departed yet?"
Xavier frowned deeply, and Sterling continued, "I'm here to pick up Grace. Just because you've struck out doesn't mean I can't try my luck."
"Stay away from Grace!" Xavier's eyes were bloodshot, filled with warning.
Xavier hadn't actually left; he had been sitting in his car since coming downstairs.
He hadn't expected Sterling to dare show up!
"And what if I don't?" Sterling met Xavier's gaze without a hint of fear, extremely arrogant.
"What are you playing at?" Xavier asked with anger.
Sterling said, "As you see, I'm pursuing Grace."
"What did you say?" Xavier's eyes were sharp, his gaze icy cold.
Sterling wasn't afraid and smiled, "You can be with Grace, so why can't I? To be honest, I'm not particularly interested in Grace herself, but seeing you so obsessed, yet unable to have her, piques my interest. Besides, marrying Grace comes with significant financial benefits. Who'd turn down that kind of money?"
"How do you know that?" Xavier said in shock.
"It's not exactly a secret." Sterling showed a smug smile.
"I'm warning you, don't have any designs on Grace, or you won't be able to handle the consequences." Xavier huffed.
Sterling, however, was not one to be easily intimidated. "Sorry, but you don't get to decide that."
Sterling glanced at his watch. "It's time that Grace should be coming down now. Are you sure you want to keep standing here talking to me?"
Sterling was extremely arrogant, almost fearless.
Internally, Sterling rejoiced, for witnessing someone as lofty and dismissive as Xavier experience a day of such anxiety and humility was a rare pleasure.
He had thought Xavier would always be rational, without vulnerabilities, but it turned out Xavier had fallen for a woman.
Sterling was different; he had no weaknesses and wouldn't end up like Xavier.
The elevator was indeed about to reach the first floor. Despite his reluctance, Xavier had no choice but to leave.
Seeing Xavier distressed, Sterling reveled in an indescribable satisfaction.
Soon, the elevator reached the basement level, and Grace stepped out. She hadn't expected Sterling to be right at the elevator door.
"Mr. Wallace, thank you for bringing me home last night and for making me hangover soup." Grace said with a faint smile.
Sterling smiled and deliberately leaned close to Grace's ear. "You're welcome."
As he spoke, he raised his hand and heavily patted Grace's face.
With this, Xavier clenched his fists, sensed that last night's trouble wasn't enough.
Sterling glanced at the car with a smirk.
He then looked down at his hand, noticing a layer of dark substance.
He knew a bit about makeup; usually, women went for lighter shades. But Grace's makeup was way darker.
A glint of something flashed in Sterling's eyes, but he didn't show it. "Let's go, get in the car. I'll take you somewhere."
Grace was puzzled. "Mr. Wallace, is there something you need?"
"You'll know when we get there," Sterling said, keeping it mysterious.
Grace started walking, but Sterling intentionally tripped her. She stumbled, and Sterling quickly caught her, his hand naturally landing on her waist.
Xavier was shocked.
If looks could kill, Sterling would be dead.
Xavier picked up his phone and called Mason. "Get rid of Sterling now!"
"Sorry," Grace thought she had tripped because she wasn't watching her step.
"It's okay," Sterling responded, holding her. But once Grace steadied herself, she quickly stepped back, keeping her distance from him.
Sterling suspected there was a secret behind Grace's face. He had originally planned to take her to breakfast and then set up a scene to see what she looked like without makeup.
Grace's recent stumble also substantiated Sterling's hunch.
Sterling and Grace got into the car, and as they drove off, Xavier immediately followed.
Sterling took Grace to a restaurant. Grace hadn't expected Sterling to take her out to eat.
Sterling smiled, "You probably haven't had breakfast yet. Neither have I. Let's eat together."
With that, Sterling led Grace inside.
It was past breakfast time, so the restaurant wasn't very crowded. There was a couple arguing in the corner.
Sterling led Grace past them, with Grace walking behind him.
The couple continued arguing. The woman held a glass of water. "You lie to me every day. We're breaking up. Go find your lover!"
With that, she threw the water.
The man dodged, and the water splashed all over Grace's face.
"I'm sorry," the woman quickly apologized.
Grace remained silent, puzzled by the strange smell of the water.
Sterling signaled to the arguing couple, and they quickly left. He took out a handkerchief and handed it to Grace. "Wipe it off. Your makeup is smudged."
Grace blinked. She'd used waterproof makeup. A little water shouldn't…
What she didn't know was that Sterling had arranged this, and the glass wasn't filled with ordinary water but with makeup remover.
Grace wiped her face with her hand, finding it covered in dark makeup.
Her face was a mess, and Sterling couldn't help but laugh.
Grace quickly took out a mirror from her bag. Seeing her face, she almost choked. "Mr. Wallace, please wait a moment. I'll go to the bathroom to fix this."
Sterling stopped her. "No need. I brought you here; it’s on me. I'll have someone bring clean clothes and a makeup artist to give you a fresh look. I promise you'll look beautiful."
Grace met Sterling's deep, enigmatic eyes and sensed that Sterling had likely discerned something.
Grace wondered if he had seen her face when he brought her back last night.
