Chapter 576 Xavier Says the Cruelest Words in the Coldest Tone
Outside the hospital room, Robert was on the phone with Grace, while Jane waited anxiously. She couldn't calm her nerves, constantly worried that their secret would be exposed, her unease growing day by day.
Not long after, Davi finished the hypnosis session, and Dorian was asleep. The door to the room opened, and Davi stepped out. Jane glanced at Robert, who was still on the phone, and signaled Davi to speak quietly.
"I just tested him. Dorian Astor doesn't seem to remember anything. You can relax," Davi said.
Jane finally let out a sigh of relief. "Stick close to Dorian for now. If he starts to remember anything, you know what to do."
"Got it," Davi replied respectfully.
Jane nodded. "As long as you do your job well, your son and grandson will be safe. But if you let even a word of this slip..."
She didn't finish her sentence, but Davi understood the implication.
"Jane, what are you and Davi talking about?" Robert had finished his call and walked over.
Jane responded calmly, "Nothing much. Davi just checked on Dorian and was updating me. It's not serious, so we don't need to worry."
"I told you Dorian would be fine. You were so worried earlier," Robert said.
Jane forced a strained smile. "Robert, I want to go back to Aetheria. Can you arrange it? When can we leave?"
Staying here only increased the risk of complications. She couldn't trust Jared anymore and felt she needed to take matters into her own hands. But this was Vesperia, not Aetheria, and she didn't have the power to act here. She needed to return to Aetheria to plan her next steps.
"We should at least check on Dorian first and meet with Grace and the others," Robert said.
Jane clenched her fists. She didn't want to wait that long, but she couldn't leave alone. Dorian was the priority.
Robert returned to the room and found Dorian asleep. It was strange; he had been talking just a moment ago.
"Jane, is Dorian asleep?" Robert asked.
Jane pulled Robert out of the room. "Don't disturb Dorian's rest."
Xavier and Grace had already left. When Robert called Grace earlier, she felt a sudden, inexplicable pain in her heart. Grace and Xavier had stayed at the hospital until Robert and Jane arrived, worried about any emergencies. Grace had even postponed meeting an important client to bring Dorian to the hospital. As long as Dorian was okay, that was all that mattered.
Robert had called to ask when they would be available, as Dorian wanted to thank them in person. Grace didn't feel she had done anything deserving of such gratitude, but Xavier accepted the invitation, saying it was the right thing to do. Xavier, being a high-ranking figure, didn't see Dorian's status as anything special, perhaps viewing him as just another person. But for Grace, an ordinary citizen, meeting someone of Dorian's stature was unimaginable.
They arranged to visit in a couple of days, once Dorian was discharged. Grace looked at Xavier. "Do you think Dorian will be okay?"
"Are you really worried?" Xavier asked.
Grace couldn't quite put her feelings into words. She just felt a sharp pain in her heart when Robert called, but it had since subsided. She decided to visit Dorian the next day.
That night, Grace messaged Robert to check on Dorian's condition. Robert said Dorian had slept for a long time in the afternoon, but it was unclear what was bothering him. Grace lay in Xavier's arms, staring at the ceiling, her mind blank. Sometimes, the more you think, the more complicated things become.
The next day, Grace and Xavier went to the hospital, bringing fruit and flowers. Grace knocked on the door, and Robert opened it.
"Grace, Xavier? What brings you here?" Robert's golden eyes showed a hint of surprise.
"We came to check on Mr. Astor. Is he feeling better?" Grace asked.
"He's much better. Come in. Dorian is still resting. He's usually very busy, so he's taking this opportunity to rest and treat it like a vacation."
As Grace was about to enter, Jane's voice called out, "Wait!"
Jane walked over and pushed Grace back. "How can you just show up unannounced? That's so rude."
Grace apologized, "I'm sorry. That was our oversight. We didn't mean any harm."
Jane continued, "Who do you think you are? You're just commoners. Do you think anyone can see Dorian? Who knows what your intentions are?"
Jane's words were harsh. Before Grace could respond, Xavier spoke up, "So you think you're superior and can look down on ordinary people?"
"When you were in those people's hands, you weren't like this. Should I pull up the video and show the world how Jane of Aetheria begged for her life?"
Jane was shocked that Xavier had a video. This was too much!
"Are you threatening me?" Jane asked.
Jane was indeed afraid. She was very concerned about her image. If the world saw her, a dignified princess, begging on her knees, it would be not very comfortable.
"This isn't a threat. I want you to show Grace some respect. We don't expect you to repay us for saving your life, but don't use your noble tactics on us. If you want to talk about power, I can cripple Aetheria's economy, and you'll be the one begging me for mercy."
Xavier's cold tone delivered the harshest words. Jane had no chance to argue. She had learned recently that Xavier had immense power in Vesperia, a strong nation. His capabilities were terrifying, and his methods were feared.
Jane knew Xavier wasn't joking. He could do exactly what he said.
