Chapter 380 Return the Hand Chain to Him

"I got something for you," Xavier said, pulling a box from his coat.

Grace reached out, but Xavier set it on the table instead.

She had no clue what was inside.

As Xavier leaned over, she noticed his watch. He still wore it, just like she still wore the hand chain he gave her.

Grace picked up the box. It was small but beautifully made.

When she opened it, she was floored.

It was Evelyn's crystal!

"How… how did you get this?" she stammered. "I thought Patrick had it. Was he telling the truth?"

"What did Patrick say?" Xavier's gaze was icy, but he couldn't look away from her.

Xavier didn't know when he'd see Grace again. They had no real ties, and they might never cross paths again.

This crystal was hers, so he had to give it back.

"How did you get this? Are you after the money too?" Grace looked at him, stunned.

Patrick had warned her not to trust Xavier, claiming he was not a good man.

But Grace hadn't believed him.

She thought Xavier wasn't like that. He didn't need money; he could get whatever he wanted.

"So, you know everything," Xavier said.

His words startled Grace. "So, you knew all along?"

Xavier nodded. "Yeah."

"You were with me to… to marry me, get this crystal, and take everything my mother left?" Grace asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Xavier opened his mouth but finally nodded. "Yeah, you're not entirely clueless."

"Why? What's so special about what my mom has? If you wanted those things, why didn't you go all the way? Why didn't you marry me?" Grace was baffled. She had trusted Xavier deeply. If he had asked her to marry him, she might have said yes. He was so close to getting what he wanted; why did he stop?

Xavier said, "I never planned to marry you. Patrick told you a lot, didn't he mention your mom might have killed my mom?"

"What?" Grace was stunned.

She had no idea about this.

Xavier continued, "When my mom died, the last person she saw was your mom. She died by the sea, and your mom was there."

Grace was speechless, unable to believe it.

"When did you find out?" she asked, eyes wide with shock.

So, she was the only one in the dark.

Xavier had been hiding so much.

"Just when I got to Skigeth," Xavier admitted.

Grace faltered, "So, from the start, you thought my mom was involved in your mom's death. You thought she was the killer. You got close to me for revenge?"

Xavier was silent, his hand clenched behind his back.

He didn't want to treat Grace this way, but if he didn't, she wouldn't leave easily.

If Grace still liked him, seeing him with Stephanie would break her heart.

Only if she hated him might she feel better.

And she needed to know these things. He couldn't hide them.

Xavier had never really thought this way. Even if Evelyn was connected to his mom's death, he never blamed Grace.

Because he knew it had nothing to do with her.

He had just told himself he couldn't keep going with Grace, but in the end, he couldn't fight his own heart.

Xavier pressed his lips together, his face tense. He didn't say a word, but Grace got it.

She smiled, but it wasn't her usual smile.

"I understand," she said.

Holding the box, Grace started to take off the hand chain from her wrist. "My mom could never be a murderer. She was a kind person. Maybe you won't believe it, but there must be some misunderstanding. Here, take it back."

She placed the hand chain where Xavier had put the box and walked out of his office.

Grace heard something fall behind her. She turned around; the hand chain had broken, and the beads were scattered on the floor.

Her heart wrenched with sudden pain, as if even the hand chain was a sign that her relationship with Xavier, like the broken chain, was destined to end.

Xavier moved slightly. He wanted to hold Grace, to embrace her and ask her not to leave.

But in the end, he could only watch her walk away.

Grace didn't know how she got into the elevator or how she left the DG Group building.

She wasn't very familiar with Oakworth. She had nothing here and had come directly from the airport by taxi.

Grace ran into an alley, and in a secluded spot, she finally couldn't hold back. Tears streamed down her face.

Xavier was the first person she had ever loved, a love that was deeply ingrained.

As Angela had said, someone like Xavier should never be taken seriously. He wasn't from their world, but she had been drawn to his kindness, even believing that Xavier liked her too.

It turned out it was all a lie. Perhaps she was the only one who had truly fallen in love.

Grace couldn't understand why Xavier hadn't told her earlier; why it had to be precisely at this moment.

Grace tightly gripped the box with Evelyn's crystal. She had wanted this crystal badly, but getting it under these circumstances didn't make her happy.

The weather today was actually quite bad. Oakworth had already started to get cold, and snowflakes were falling.

Skigeth enjoyed a temperate climate, like a perpetual spring, and rarely saw snow.

She had once eagerly anticipated winter in Oakworth, dreaming of watching the first snowfall with Xavier.

Grace looked up at the falling snowflakes. From now on, she would watch the snow alone.

At that moment, Grace's phone rang. It was Lily calling.

Grace composed herself and answered, "Lily."

Lily said, "Ms. Lewis, the house you bought has been transferred. When will you and Mr. Montgomery go see it? A housewarming party is in order, right? I'll gather some friends to make it lively for you!"

The house Lily mentioned was the one Grace had wanted to buy when she decided to shift her work focus to Oakworth.

Grace wanted a place of her own, not just living at Xavier's, so she had asked Lily to help her find a house.

"Sell it." Grace didn't need that house anymore.

"What?" Lily thought she had misheard. "Didn't you just buy it? Why sell it now?"

It had been hard to find the perfect house, in a great location, spacious, beautifully decorated, and it had cost Grace a lot of money. It could be said that Grace had spent all her savings on it.

Lily asked, "Ms. Lewis, what's wrong? Did something happen? You don't sound right."

Grace replied, "Nothing, it's just snowing."

Lily responded, "Does it snow in Skigeth? Wait, Ms. Lewis, are you back? You..."
