Chapter 616 Chase's Death
Thomas's eyes were a bit misty. "Grandpa, you gotta hang in there. Watch me get a girlfriend, watch me get married."
"Alright, alright," Chase said, tears glistening in his eyes. "It's wonderful. Our family is growing so much. Grace is gonna have a baby, and you all will have your kids."
Unfortunately, he knew he wouldn't be able to see it. He was aware of his health condition. Having lived half his life, finding Grace was the fulfillment of his last wish.
Everyone else had tears in their eyes too. Chase spoke a lot, and it was clear he was especially happy today.
Chase gave many instructions, covering every detail.
They stayed with him, feeling a sense of foreboding.
Later, Chase looked extremely tired and pulled Grace close.
"Grace, you and Xavier stay. I want to talk to you two alone. Everyone else, please step out," Chase said, trying to endure his physical discomfort.
"Grandpa," Grace said, wiping her tears. "Grandpa."
Seeing Chase like this was truly heartbreaking.
She held Chase's hand tightly, shaking her head repeatedly.
No one else wanted to leave either, but Chase said, "I'm fine. You all go out first and come back in a bit."
Steven, being the eldest of the Coleman family, took care of the others and led everyone out.
Even though they were all worried, Chase's condition was dire. If it were his wish, they would fulfill it.
Everyone left, leaving only Grace and Xavier behind.
Chase held Grace and Xavier's hands tightly, placing their hands together.
He looked at Xavier. "I'm entrusting my granddaughter to you. If you ever treat her badly or make her suffer even a little, I won't forgive you, even as a ghost!"
"Grandpa, Grandpa, why don't you rest for a bit? Are you feeling uncomfortable? I'll call the doctor," Grace said, tears streaming down her face.
Chase's behavior felt like he was giving his final instructions, and she had a terrible feeling in her heart.
Accompanied by immense fear, she felt like Chase was about to leave her.
Xavier placed a hand on Grace's shoulder and nodded firmly. "I will!"
"I will take good care of Grace, but not just because of your request. She is the person I love, my wife, my partner. So, I will protect her well. It's my duty as a man, something I should do."
Xavier's words made Chase very satisfied. Chase nodded. "Good, good."
A smile appeared on his lips, as if he had no more worries.
Grace said, "Grandpa, Xavier and I are going to get our marriage license the day after tomorrow. I'll show you the certificate then. The wedding will be soon after. Grandpa, you promised me you'd hold my hand and walk me down the aisle."
Grace wiped her tears and continued, "Grandpa, when the baby is born, they'll call you great-grandpa. You'll help me raise the baby, Grandpa, Grandpa..."
Grace's heart felt like it had a hole in it. She and Chase had just reunited, missing so many years. The future was supposed to be filled with happiness.
She didn't want Chase to leave, but she was so scared.
Grace hated the idea of separation by death, just like when her mom left her. She didn't understand anything and couldn't do anything.
She could only watch as God took her loved ones away, watching them leave.
She didn't want this. She wanted Chase to live well.
Chase said, "Our Grace is getting married. It's my fault for missing so much time with you."
Saying this, Chase moved and took out a black card, placing it in Grace's hand. "This was originally meant as a wedding gift for your mom. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance. I've been saving it for her all these years. Now that you're getting married, I'm giving it to you."
"Grace, be happy, be joyful."
As Chase said these words, it seemed to drain all his strength.
He looked exhausted, his eyes slowly closing.
"Grandpa, Grandpa, Grandpa, look at me again, open your eyes and look at me!" Grace panicked.
Her tears flowed uncontrollably, like a broken dam.
She held Chase's hand tightly, but Chase's hand loosened at that moment. The heart monitor beside him turned into a straight line, emitting a piercing sound.
"Grandpa! Grandpa!" Grace couldn't believe it. Her grandpa had just left her.
She threw herself onto Chase, crying out loud. "I don't want anything else, I just want you back, Grandpa!"
"I just found you, how could this happen? Grandpa, you promised you wouldn't leave me. You said I finally found my family, and you'd be with me forever..."
Grace was extremely emotional, unable to calm down.
Why do good people always leave this world so easily, while those who do evil live so long?
"Grandpa!" Grace's voice was torn. She held Chase's hand tightly.
This must be fake. Chase couldn't have left her.
Chase must be asleep. When he wakes up, he'll open his eyes and look at her.
"Grace, I'll go get everyone."
Birth, aging, illness, and death are natural parts of life, something everyone must go through.
Even Xavier, with his tough exterior, felt heartbroken seeing this scene.
They had done everything they could, bringing in experts from around the world. Jared had also sent people to search, but found nothing.
Though hard to accept, everyone had a premonition. Chase's brief improvement might not have been a recovery, but a final burst of energy.
Maybe even God was mourning, as the sky suddenly darkened, like a huge storm was coming.
Everyone entered with heavy hearts, their eyes moist.
Angela immediately went to Grace, hugging her. "Grace, don't be sad. Grandpa..."
Angela couldn't continue. Chase was a good person, treating her well too.
She couldn't bear to deceive him. He probably considered her his granddaughter-in-law even in his final moments.
Angela felt sad too. She had intended to comfort Grace, but ended up crying with her.
Chase had left so suddenly. From the discovery of the poisoning to the rapid decline in his health, it had only been a few days.
The unexpected event came too quickly, leaving everyone unprepared.
Grace felt even more guilty. If it weren't for her, Chase wouldn't have come to Skigeth. If he hadn't come to Skigeth, this wouldn't have happened.
She also resented Jared. Jared was the real culprit, not only killing her mom but now her grandpa too!
