Chapter 226 Calling Xavier
Grace finally submitted her fragrance sample just before the deadline, ticking off a big task.
Lately, the Montgomery family had been pushing her about the stock transfer. Not knowing much about it, she left it to the experts.
Xavier had said Mason could handle it, so she trusted Mason with the job.
It was past midnight, and Grace was about to freshen up and sleep, planning to visit her mom tomorrow. She hadn't seen her in a while and wanted to update her and reassure her.
Just as she was settling in, her phone rang. It was Patrick. "Grace, I sent out the engagement cancellation notice like you asked. Why haven't the shares been transferred yet?" he asked.
Grace was confused. It had been a few days. Why hadn't Mason started the transfer? Mason was usually quick with these things. She didn't care much about the Montgomery Group's shares. Given the delay, she figured Mason must have his reasons for holding onto them for so long.
She told Patrick, "I'll check on it and get back to you soon."
Patrick was impatient. "Hurry up, or let me handle it. Don't try any tricks, Grace!"
"Don't worry. As long as your family stops bothering me, I'll return the shares. But Ryan keeps harassing me. If he doesn't stop, I might reconsider," she said, annoyed.
What was Ryan's deal, sending her gifts every day?
Patrick's tone turned dark. "Grace, don't play games. I'll see you tomorrow, and we need to sort this out."
Grace had suspected Patrick might have been behind her car accident, but since Ryan got hurt and Patrick seemed clueless, she doubted it was him.
Even though she had Mason handling the shares, Patrick didn't know Xavier was involved too.
With Patrick coming over tomorrow, she needed to check on the progress.
After hanging up, she tried calling Mason, but he didn't answer.
Her eyes landed on Xavier's contact. She hesitated. They hadn't talked much since their hospital encounter, though he had visited her at home.
It was late, but she figured Xavier might not be busy and could be resting.
As she thought about it, she accidentally called him.
Xavier was still awake, in an international video conference. The DG Group was a big player both locally and abroad, and Xavier was ambitious, with many overseas branches.
Because of the time difference, it was daytime abroad. Xavier couldn't sleep anyway, and now he was even more awake.
When his phone buzzed, he noticed right away. He rarely took calls during meetings, but seeing Grace's name, he paused the meeting.
"Grace?" he answered, walking out of his study.
Hearing his deep voice, Grace's heart skipped a beat. "Am I disturbing you?" she asked.
"No, I'm still working," Xavier replied quickly.
Grace couldn't help but ask, "You're working this late?"
"I'll rest when I'm done," Xavier said, knowing he'd probably only get a couple of hours of sleep before dawn.
"Okay."
"Why are you calling so late? Is something wrong?" Xavier asked.
Grace explained, "I tried calling Mason, but he didn't answer. The Montgomery family is pushing for the stock transfer. Patrick's really anxious and said he'd come see me about it tomorrow."
Xavier chuckled coldly. "What are your plans for tomorrow?" He had reminded Grace to visit her mother.
"I plan to visit my mom. I haven't seen her in a while."
"Then meet Patrick after you visit your mom," Xavier suggested. If Grace could find out anything, it would be better if she went to Patrick, not the other way around.
The stock transfer delay gave Grace some leverage. How she handled the divorce and used this leverage was up to her.
"I was planning to go in the morning," Grace said.
"Is your injury fully healed?" Xavier asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
"It was just a scratch, nothing serious," Grace replied. She didn't think much of it.
"By the way, Xavier, if you're not in a hurry to sleep, I have some financial questions," she added.
"Go ahead."
They ended up talking for a while, losing track of time.
Meanwhile, Xavier's employees were waiting for him to return to the video call. They thought he'd be back in two minutes, then ten, but he didn't return. Xavier had never taken such a long break during a meeting. It was over an hour before he came back, but he seemed in a good mood. "Let's continue the meeting," he said warmly.
The next morning, Grace took a bouquet of white roses to the cemetery. It was quiet and almost empty, with only a few visitors.
She found her mother Evelyn's grave and placed the roses down.
"Mom, I'm here. Sorry I've been so busy. I miss you so much," she murmured.
Evelyn loved roses, but Zach had never given her any. Even though Evelyn was buried here, Zach rarely visited. It had probably been five years since he last came.
Grace didn't understand why her mom chose Zach. He seemed to have forgotten her. Was it worth it for her mom to marry him? Did she ever regret it?
Evelyn didn't talk much about her family. Grace didn't know her maternal grandparents. Evelyn used to stare at a bracelet, lost in thought. When she noticed Grace, she'd hide it. Grace once asked if she missed home, but Evelyn just shook her head.
After Evelyn's accident, Grace's maternal grandparents never showed up.
Grace hadn't seen the bracelet since the accident. When she went through Evelyn's things, it was gone.
