Chapter 223 Confrontation Between Two Men
"Xavier, are you messing with me? I have better taste than that; I wouldn't go for just any guy," Grace said calmly.
"Grace!" Ryan yelled angrily. He thought, 'What did she mean by that? Did she think I was that bad?'
Xavier's expression softened as he looked at Ryan. "Do you want to stay in a regular ward?"
"I..." Ryan trailed off.
"Then let's move you here," Xavier decided.
Ryan thought it over. He hated the regular ward—it was cramped, old, no private bathroom, and he'd have to share with others. But Grace being here was a big deal. Staying would mean being close to her, and maybe she'd help him if he needed it.
Imagining Grace helping him with personal stuff, he made up his mind. "Alright! I'll stay."
Xavier then looked at Grace, who quickly said, "I'm fine now. Just some scrapes; I don't need to stay."
Grace got off the bed and looked at Ryan. "Ryan, since you like it here, it's all yours."
Ryan was shocked. "Grace, you!"
"Since you're fine now, can you stay and take care of me?" Ryan tried another angle.
Grace looked at him seriously, her eyes shining. Ryan felt like he'd seen those eyes before but couldn't place them. He'd seen so many women, and now they all seemed ordinary.
As Ryan struggled to remember, Grace said, "Ryan, if you got brain damage from the accident, get it checked. You're already pretty brainless; don't get any dumber."
Ryan was silent, thinking, 'What did she mean? Was she pretending because Xavier was here?'
"If you don't like me, then why did you save me?" Ryan asked.
"I didn't save you. Don't flatter yourself." Grace got off the bed. "I'm leaving, Ryan. Don't come near me again; I don't want to see you."
Grace didn't take Ryan's feelings seriously. She knew he fell for people quickly and remembered how in love he was with Kelly before.
Without dwelling on it, Grace left the ward, like she was avoiding something.
"Grace! Grace!" Ryan called after her. He wanted to wheel himself out to chase her, but something held him back.
Ryan turned to see Xavier's hand on his wheelchair. "Xavier, why are you..."
Xavier's grip was firm, controlling the wheelchair with one hand.
"You hurt your leg, and you still can't stay put?" Xavier warned.
"I'm not being restless. I just realized I might like Grace. She's different from other women," Ryan said. While other women tried to get close to him, Grace seemed different. If she was playing hard to get, then she had already gotten her way.
Ryan felt that, despite Grace not being conventionally attractive, there was something about her that drew him in. It wasn't just her looks. This feeling was new to him. He didn't notice Xavier's expression darkening behind him.
"Xavier, were you with Grace yesterday?" Ryan asked, thinking back to the previous day.
Xavier's eyes darkened, sending chills down Ryan's spine. "That's none of your business."
"Xavier, I'm Grace's fiancé."
"Not anymore."
Ryan's heart sank. What did Xavier mean by that?
Grace had used the shares Xavier gave her to call off the engagement. Was this Xavier's plan all along?
"Xavier, what do you mean..."
Amy and Wendy, who had been quietly observing outside, walked in. Amy interrupted Ryan. "Xavier, are you here to visit Ryan? He's fine."
Even though Amy didn't like Xavier, she knew he wouldn't compete for the Montgomery family's assets and might even help them. So, she always stayed polite around him.
But Xavier didn't even look at her. "Since he's fine, I'll leave. He seems to prefer this ward, so I'll have him transferred here. Consider it a wish granted by his dear uncle," Xavier said coolly.
"No! Xavier, I was just joking!" Ryan called out. He wanted to stay because of Grace. Now that she was gone, he had no reason to stay.
But Xavier left without looking back, ignoring Ryan's pleas.
"Mom, I can't break off the engagement with Grace. Go find Dad, please. Bring Grace back. I won't break it off!" Ryan turned to Amy.
"Ryan, what are you talking about? You didn't like Grace. The engagement is off, and I don't want her as your wife. Didn't you hear what she just said? A woman like that can't be part of the Montgomery family!" Amy rejected Ryan's request.
Downstairs, Grace was paying the bill since her injuries weren't serious.
She was about to hail a cab when she saw a familiar car parked in front of her.
"Get in," Xavier said from the back seat.
Grace got in and asked, "Xavier, you came down so quickly. Aren't you going to spend more time with Ryan?"
"Do you want me to?" Xavier asked.
Grace stayed silent. It didn't seem to matter to her. Why did she sense a hint of annoyance from Xavier?
Grace smiled. "So, you didn't come to visit Ryan. Did you come to see me?"
"You're overthinking it. He's my nephew; as an elder, I should visit him," Xavier said indifferently.
"Is that so? Then why am I in your car instead of Ryan?" Grace asked.
"He can't be discharged yet. I'm just giving you a ride since it's on the way," Xavier replied.
"I see." Grace nodded and leaned back in her seat.
After a while, Xavier spoke in a sinister tone. "You risked your life to save Ryan?"
Grace was momentarily speechless. "Do you believe what he says? Just ignore his nonsense. It's all a misunderstanding. I'm starting to think Ryan might have some brain damage. If you have the time, you should take him to see a doctor."
"Not my concern," Xavier said directly. Ryan's life or death didn't matter to him.
Grace looked at him, thinking, 'If he doesn't care about Ryan, then why did he come to the hospital?'
