Chapter 222 Ryan's Provocation

"You don't get to act superior just because you're an elder. I don't follow your rules, and I won't be held back by your expectations," Grace said firmly.

Amy clutched her chest, glaring at Grace. This new attitude of Grace's was really getting on her nerves. Grace used to be so compliant, but now she was a whole new person.

"Grace! A woman like you will never get married!" Amy snapped.

Grace sneered, "That's none of your business."

Just then, a voice came from outside. "Mom, what are you doing here?"

"Ryan, you're awake! My poor son, what have you been through? Does it hurt? How's your leg? What did the doctor say? Are you okay? This must be Grace's fault. Why wasn't she the one hit by the car instead of you?" Amy said, full of concern.

Turning to Grace, Amy spat, "Grace, do you want to ruin the Montgomery family before you're satisfied? We broke off the engagement like you wanted. What more do you want? Why can't you leave Ryan alone?"

Amy blamed Grace, shooting her a look that could kill. If only Grace had died in that car crash, things wouldn't be such a mess.

"Mom! Stop talking!" Ryan interrupted.

"Why should I? Isn't she always like this? You begged the Montgomery family for this marriage. Otherwise, with your status, how could you be engaged to Ryan?"

"Ryan is handsome and capable. Look at yourself, you can't even compare to his pinky finger. You don't measure up to the Montgomery family's standards. You might be a curse; maybe you even cursed your own mother to her death!" Amy continued to taunt Grace.

"Amy!" Grace's face turned icy, her eyes sharp. "I respect you as an elder, but you don't deserve it. I don't think I'm unworthy of Ryan. To me, he's nothing. And how my mother died is none of your business. You should pray your child doesn't curse you to death."

"You... Ryan, did you hear what Grace just said?" Amy was about to explode with anger.

"Mom! Grace saved me in the car accident. If it weren't for her, I might have been killed."

"What? She saved you?" Amy was stunned. Was Ryan making this up?

"Mom, Wendy, stop talking and leave. I want to talk to Grace alone." Ryan's gaze fell on Grace.

He remembered that when the car was coming, Grace pulled him. If it hadn't been for her quick action, he might have been a goner. And even if he had survived, it could have been a mere shadow of a life remaining.

"I have nothing to talk to you about. I've made myself clear before." Grace didn't think there was anything to say to Ryan.

"Mom, you all go out first." Ryan felt that some things needed to be said to Grace. When Grace pulled him and they rolled on the ground together, he suddenly realized he might have some feelings for her.

Amy and Wendy left first, and sensing the tension, the others in the ward also exited. Soon, only Ryan and Grace were left in the room.

"What do you want to say?"

"Grace, thank you," Ryan said, looking at her.

"No need. I didn't mean to save you," Grace replied. She didn't even remember doing it.

"Grace, in that moment of danger, you pulled me. Doesn't that mean you care about me? That you instinctively wanted to protect me?" Ryan's tone was urgent, seeking confirmation.

"You're overthinking it. I'd pull a dog out of the way of a car. I really didn't save you, so don't get any ideas," Grace said calmly.

"I don't believe it. Grace, is it really that hard to admit you like me?"

Grace was speechless, thinking, 'Did Ryan get brain damage from the accident? He seems off.'

"I know I was wrong before, Grace. I think I might have feelings for you," Ryan said sincerely.

Grace was puzzled. She was now certain that Ryan had brain damage.

"Grace, I'll cut ties with Kelly. Can I pursue you again? I promise to treat you well and never be like before," Ryan said emotionally, his voice loud.

Grace was genuinely scared. Ryan must be delusional. "Ryan..." She started to speak when the door suddenly swung open.

Xavier stood there, looking particularly cold. As Grace looked up, their eyes met.

Grace pondered, 'Why was Xavier here? Did he hear what Ryan just said?'

Grace couldn't shake off the strange sense of guilt, as if she were actually involved with Ryan and had been caught by Xavier. She couldn't understand why. She had been completely innocent with Ryan, and nothing inappropriate had happened between them.

"Xavier? Are you here to visit me?" Ryan, in his wheelchair, looked at Xavier at the door.

Behind Xavier, Amy and Wendy were still peeking inside.

"How are you?" Xavier asked, looking at Grace.

Ryan thought Xavier was asking him and quickly said, "I'm fine. The doctor said with good rest, I'll be better in a few days."

Grace stayed silent.

"Xavier, you don't know, Grace risked her life to save me. When she saw the car coming, she hugged me first. I've felt her sincerity, and I've decided that I'll treat her well and live a good life with her," Ryan said, trying to provoke Xavier.

Despite not knowing Xavier's relationship with Grace, Ryan wanted to assert his interest, making it clear to Xavier that Grace was his. He sensed that Xavier's presence wasn't solely about him. If Xavier wasn't here for him, then who was he here for? Was it possible that Xavier had come to see Grace?

"Is that so?" Xavier's eyes were cold and piercing. When his gaze swept over Ryan, Ryan felt a chill in his heart.

"Yes, after this life-and-death experience, I know that everything Grace and I have been through is God's arrangement. It's fate between us. Since she likes me, we'll get married," Ryan said.

"Do you like him?" Xavier asked Grace, his eyes even colder.

Ryan also looked at Grace, feeling a bit nervous. He hoped Grace liked him.

Grace's lips curled into a mocking smile, her words making Ryan's face turn ugly.
