Chapter 054 She Seems a Bit Intrigued
Would a normal person or father say the words that Zach said ?
Throughout her life, no matter how she was bullied, Zach never cared.
He always favored Madison, and he might not even have wanted to acknowledge that Grace was his daughter. He always showed bias towards Madison, which Grace could understand. But how could he expect her to forgive someone in a situation like this?
She had never held any hopes that Zach would eventually help her, but he just kept letting her down, exposing his true, ugly nature.
His daughter was almost assaulted, yet Zach didn't show any concern; instead, he pushed her to forgive a violent offender.
He even said she was fine now and should forgive them. It felt like a knife was being twisted mercilessly in Grace's heart with every word, a knife called family. Though she had no delusions, it hurt her nonetheless.
She took a deep breath and asked, "How much money did Tom give you?"
He denied, "Don't talk nonsense, Grace. I've already drafted the apology letter for you; you just need to come back and sign it."
"I will never forgive him. I want him to rot in jail!" With that, Grace ended the call.
She had managed to keep her emotions hidden during the call, but now that she had hung up, her eyes turned red against her will.
She wanted to ask Zach if it had been Madison who was almost bullied, would he have let Madison forgive those men so easily? Or would Zach, like a father who loves his daughter, fight those men to the end?
It was probably the latter. In Zach's eyes, Madison was always the only one that mattered.
Grace stayed in place for a long time, biting her lip, not allowing herself to cry.
However, shedding tears for Zach felt utterly unworthy. As Grace was collecting herself, her phone rang again, and this time it was a call from Xavier.
She quickly pulled herself together, answered the phone, and tried to sound cheerful. "Hello, Mr. Montgomery?"
"Where are you? I'll send someone to pick you up," Xavier's cold voice came through the phone.
"Pick me up? Is something wrong?" she asked, worriedly.
Xavier paused for two full seconds, and if it weren't for his breathing, Grace might have thought he had hung up.
"Have you been crying? Were you bullied?" he asked.
Grace's eyes widened, surprised that Xavier could so easily sense her unhappiness.
"No, why would I cry? I've secured two new store contracts today; I am quite delighted."
Grace forced a smile, and to convince Xavier of her cheerfulness, she even let out a laugh.
But it didn't sound quite right, which made Xavier say, "Stop laughing, it sounds terrible."
Was her laughter truly that bad? Surely not.
"Are you at a hotel?" Xavier continued.
She replied, "No, I'm just at the entrance to my neighborhood now."
"If you have nowhere to go, you can come to the Bameran villa."
Grace paused, surprised. Was Xavier concerned that she had nowhere to stay? She felt a warmth she hadn't known before. No one had ever cared whether she had somewhere to live or about her safety.
Except for Xavier!
Comparing the two phone calls, one person was blaming and pressuring her while the other was showing concern for her. Sometimes, Grace felt that, disregarding the awful things he had done, Xavier was a good person! In that moment, she felt slightly attracted to him.
"I have a place to stay; it was all a misunderstanding, don't listen to Mr. Hastings rambling on. But could you stay on the line and talk with me a little longer?" she asked.
Grace wasn't sure if Tom was still waiting for her. Originally, she had planned to ask a security guard to accompany her upstairs, but with Xavier there, she felt an even stronger sense of security than if a guard were by her side.
"Talk about what?" he asked.
"Anything," she replied.
Hearing Xavier's voice seemed to lift the mood that had been soured by Zach. The world wasn't all bad people, she thought, and Xavier seemed to be a decent one.
Searching for a topic, Grace said, "I'm about to get on the elevator. Have you had dinner yet?"
"No," he replied.
"That's a coincidence, I haven't eaten either. But if you have a sensitive stomach, you really need to eat on schedule," she chided him lightly.
Xavier seemed busy and didn't respond much to Grace.
Muttering to herself, Grace soon stepped out of the elevator, relieved to find no one waiting outside her door. She checked the fingerprint lock's access log, and seeing that the door hadn't been opened, felt safe to enter.
She thought about installing a camera at her front door so she could see if anyone had been there.
Once home, Grace locked the door and said into her phone, "I'm home now. Thank you, you're a truly good person!"
A good person? Xavier smiled. Not many had called him that.
It had been two years since the DG Group established a branch in Skigeth. It had a different legal entity and manager and didn't even carry the DG name on the surface, seemingly unrelated to the famous DG Group. The reality, it was just a subsidiary Xavier set up in Skigeth.
Someone else managed the company, so Xavier never needed to visit.
This time, in Skigeth to avoid raising Patrick's suspicions, Xavier hadn't gone to the company but had secretly met with the person in charge.
The Skigeth branch manager had just left, and upon recalling what Victor had said about Grace was staying at a hotel, Xavier called her. If Grace truly had nowhere to go, he could offer her a stay at the Bameran villa.
Mason was by Xavier's side observing…
Upon ending the call, Mason noticed Xavier still smiling.
Ever since Xavier arrived in Skigeth, he seemed to have changed quite a bit. Although he was as cool and impassive as ever, now he was showing concern for others.
But Grace was officially engaged to Ryan.
"Do you have something to say?" Xavier looked up, noticing Mason seemed hesitant to speak.
Mason shook his head and replied, "No."
Xavier demanded, "Out with it."
Mason had no choice but to say, "Mr. Montgomery, are you perhaps concerned about Ms. Lewis?"
"Why should I care about her?" Xavier remarked.
Mason stated, "You have never invited anyone else over to stay at your place."
Indeed, Xavier had never invited anyone, man or woman, to stay at his home before, yet Grace was the exception.
"Is that so?" Xavier said, nonchalantly.
Mason, dared to speak his mind, "Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I can't help feeling that Ms. Lewis is special to you, different from other girls."
"How so?" Xavier lifted his gaze to meet Mason's.
Mason had never heard Xavier speak highly of a woman, in the time they’ve known each other..
"To me, Ms. Lewis looks just like any other girl, but you don't like women getting close or touching you. Back in Oakworth, even when Ms. Park touched you, you'd go wash your hands."
But Grace was different—she not only touched Xavier but also slept with him, and Xavier didn't seem to mind.
Hearing Mason's words, Xavier felt perplexed. He didn't see how Grace was any different from other women.
Just then, Xavier's phone began to ring; it was Stephanie calling.
