Chapter 627 Sorry to Disappoint You, I Am Not Xavier
Why didn't she stop him? Why didn't she hold him back from going after Jared?
If she had known what would happen, she would never have let Xavier go.
Even if it meant letting Jared escape, she didn't want anyone to get hurt.
If the cost of killing Jared were so many lives, she would rather nothing had happened at all.
The others who died in the accident were also someone's family. Their families would be suffering just like hers.
...
Sterling had taken Grace to the pier again. It was night now, and the sea was pitch black, nothing visible.
Steven had already come ashore, Angela was there too, and Scott and Thomas had also arrived.
Seeing her cousins, Grace said, "Steven, why don't you take a break?"
Steven replied, "It's okay, we're all here, Grace."
Angela stepped forward, "You all should rest if you need to, or go about your business. I'll stay here with Grace."
Everyone knew Grace needed some space, so they dispersed but stayed nearby.
Angela said, "Grace, just because we didn't find anything today doesn't mean it's bad news. Maybe Xavier has already been rescued. Isn't that how it always goes in TV shows? The main character never dies, they drift somewhere and get saved."
Grace nodded. She knew this wasn't a TV show, and she wasn't the main character.
She had been alone since she was a child. God took her beloved mother, then her grandfather, and now, even Xavier was gone.
"If you want to cry, just cry. I'm here! We're best friends, aren't we?"
Grace shook her head. "I don't want to cry, Angela. You should rest too. You've been worried all day. Look at those dark circles under your eyes."
"Don't worry, I'll just sit here for a while. I want to look at the stars."
Grace looked up at the sky.
Tonight wasn't as bad as last night, but there were no stars.
She stared at the sky. It was so dark, everything around seemed black.
Grace suddenly remembered a dream she had before, where she was falling into endless darkness, a bottomless abyss.
Now, it felt like she was in that abyss, the same darkness, the same fear.
Was she dreaming?
Yes, she must be dreaming.
This was just a terrible nightmare. When it ended, she would wake up, and Xavier would be by her side, telling her it was just a bad dream.
But why hadn't she woken up yet?
They still had so many things to do, so many plans.
He had promised to take her to many places, to leave work behind and travel the world with her.
Xavier had said he was hers, that he would listen to her. If she called him to her side, he would come.
Why didn't he want her anymore? Did Xavier not want their baby either?
Grace sat there, her mind filled with memories of Xavier.
So much had happened in the past year, they had been through so much. She believed he would come back.
I'll wait for you three more days. If you don't come back, I'll take our child and marry someone else. Then our child will call someone else dad.
I'm a tough person, I mean what I say.
Xavier, why haven't you come back?
Waiting is the worst feeling, especially when you can't do anything.
By the next morning, Mason had returned.
He had searched the sea for two days and found nothing, not a trace of Xavier.
The yacht had been found, but the water was too deep for divers. They had to rely on machines.
The yacht was just a shell, the hard parts blown who knows where, let alone any people.
When Mason faced Grace, he felt helpless.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Lewis."
They had tried their best, but it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Grace nodded. "I know, thank you, Mason."
Her expression was stiff. She knew it wasn't anyone's fault, not Mason's either.
"Mason, you believe he's okay too, right? He must be hiding somewhere, resting."
Mason opened his mouth but didn't know what to say.
He wanted to believe it too, but with nothing found, the chances were slim.
An explosion and a tornado, Xavier couldn't have survived.
"He must want to see us all doing well. Don't worry, I'm fine now, Mason. You take care too."
Seeing Grace like this, Mason's eyes grew misty.
Not just Grace, but Chase's family too. They had planned to take the ashes to Aetheria in the next few days.
But with this situation, Grace wouldn't go. If she stayed, the Coleman family wouldn't leave her alone.
So, Grace's uncle and aunt, along with Thomas, took Chase's ashes back, leaving Steven and Scott to stay with Grace.
Losing two loved ones at once is unbearable for anyone.
For the next two days, Grace continued to search with the rescue team.
Holding onto a sliver of hope, Grace persisted.
Even though everyone believed Xavier was dead, Grace was convinced that without a body, he was still alive.
A person's stamina is limited. Eventually, Grace couldn't hold on and fainted.
Grace was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, she and the baby were fine, but the doctor said she needed to rest and recover emotionally.
After so long without proper rest, Grace slept deeply.
She felt like she had a long dream, where there was an explosion and Xavier disappeared.
"Xavier!" She woke up calling his name.
She knew it was just a nightmare.
She saw a man's silhouette. Sterling stood up. "Sorry to disappoint you, I'm not Xavier."
"Sterling? When did you get here? Why are you here?"
"You still recognize me, so no memory loss."
"Where's Xavier?" Grace asked.
Sterling replied, "Do you want the truth or a lie?"
Grace was silent.
"The truth is, Xavier hasn't been found, and your body can't take it anymore. The doctor said if you don't rest, you might lose the baby." Sterling made it sound serious.
"Xavier's baby, you want to keep it, right? If you don't want anything to happen to the baby, you need to take care of yourself. You believe Xavier is alive, right? If you don't take care of yourself, how will you be able to wait for him to come back?"
