Chapter 610 Brittany Suddenly Hugs Xavier
"My phone's over there. I've got surveillance footage. If you don't believe me, check it out yourself," Jared pointed to his phone.
Grace scoffed. "You think you can mess with me? Do you really think I'd trust you over my own family?"
"Grace, you..." Jared's plan was solid, but he didn't count on the strong bond between Grace and Xavier.
If Grace didn't believe him and refused to watch, his plan would fall apart.
Jared's eyes darted around as he scrambled for another tactic. "What, are you scared? Afraid to watch? If you trust Xavier as much as you say, why not take a look?"
"Nice try, but reverse psychology won't work on me," Grace shot back.
Seeing Jared getting desperate, Grace knew he was bluffing and just putting on a show.
She knew Xavier well enough not to need anyone else's word, especially not Jared's, who was notorious for lying.
He was clearly trying to drive a wedge between her and Xavier. Who knew what his real intentions were?
"I'm not using reverse psychology. I want you to see what kind of person Xavier really is. My phone's right there. Don't you want to know what kind of relationship Xavier has with Brittany?"
Grace didn't believe the earlier claims that Xavier liked someone else and didn't care for her. But Jared's last comment piqued her curiosity.
Brittany had called Xavier that morning, and they sounded pretty familiar with each other. Xavier had promised to explain later, but she still didn't know how they knew each other.
Could Jared's phone really have something?
Grace picked up the phone. Jared hadn't locked it, and the surveillance footage was already on the home screen.
...
Xavier went to the place Jared mentioned. It wasn't cramped or a cell; it looked more like a hotel room with a bed and a bathroom.
There was no one else around. As Xavier entered, a woman immediately threw herself at him.
Xavier didn't have time to dodge and was caught in Brittany's embrace.
Brittany wrapped her arms around Xavier's waist, crying, "Xavier, you finally came. I've been waiting all night."
From the surveillance angle, it really looked like a hotel rendezvous.
Brittany's strong perfume made Xavier uncomfortable. He tried to push her away, but she clung to him tightly.
The surveillance video on Grace's end cut off at that moment.
This was all part of Jared's premeditated plan.
He knew Brittany couldn't hold on for long, so he only showed Grace a few seconds of footage.
That was enough.
"I wasn't lying, was I? The rest of the footage might be too much for you to handle," Jared said.
"It's broad daylight, just the two of them in a hotel. What do you think they're doing?"
"Grace, you're not stupid. Do you really think you can control a man like Xavier? Sometimes, I almost feel sorry for you, betting everything on Xavier. It's a losing game."
"You didn't know about Brittany and Xavier, did you? Of course not. They kept it from you. Xavier is too smart to let you find out."
"You remind me of myself back then. I was head over heels for your mom, gave her everything, and what did I get? She turned around and fell for someone else. They were together behind my back."
Grace calmly put the phone down. "So, what's your point?"
The footage was unsettling, but Grace wasn't naive enough to take Jared's word at face value.
She and Xavier had been through too much together to be easily swayed.
"I just want you to know the truth. I don't want to see you get hurt."
"Well, thanks for that. Anything else you want to say?"
Jared couldn't read Grace. Her eyes were as calm as Elizabeth's had been.
He and Jane had conspired to set up Dorian, creating all sorts of compromising situations, but Elizabeth never believed it.
Elizabeth's trust in Dorian was unshakeable.
He couldn't believe Grace was the same.
"Don't you believe me?" Jared asked.
Grace replied, "Isn't this what you wanted me to see? I've seen it. Why do you care if I believe it or not? Do you really want me to believe you that badly?"
Jared, worried about seeming too eager, said, "You misunderstand. I want you to know the truth. Grace, even though I'm not your father, I still have some feelings for your mother. I want you to be happy."
Grace saw through Jared's facade. He really could say anything without shame.
"Should I thank you for helping me see the truth about a man?"
Jared's face lit up. "Grace, how about this? You let me go, and then..."
Before he could finish, Grace turned and walked away.
Jared wasn't angry. He was confident that the seed of doubt had been planted in Grace's mind. Even if Xavier explained, without evidence, it wouldn't matter.
Even if Grace believed Xavier now, later on, Brittany could say something to her. A woman's heart is sensitive, and he didn't believe Grace wouldn't fall for it.
Outside, Scott was waiting.
"Grace, what did Jared say to you?"
Grace shook her head. "Nothing much, just some attempts to sow discord. I didn't take it to heart."
"He's really stubborn. I've tried everything, but he still won't hand over the antidote. The hospital said Grandpa..."
Scott didn't finish his sentence.
Chase's condition was dire. The hospital had issued a critical notice. Despite all the emergency treatments, his condition wasn't improving.
"Scott..."
"Don't worry, Grace. Think about something happy. Aren't you getting married to Xavier in a few days? Are you ready?"
Grace nodded. "I'm ready."
"You're going to be a bride. Cheer up."
Grace forced a smile. "I'm very happy."
"Forget it. Your smile looks worse than crying!"
Grace held her phone, her finger hovering over Xavier's name, debating whether to call him. After a moment's hesitation, she decided not to.
She wouldn't believe Jared's words. She'd wait for Xavier to explain himself.
If Xavier couldn't explain, she'd make him kneel on a keyboard!
