Chapter 319 Placed Evelyn's Ashes at the Montgomery Group
Patrick leaned in, "Hey, listen up. Hand those shares back to me, and the Montgomery clan's got your back from now on."
Grace almost burst out laughing. Patrick's BS was absolutely ridiculous; he wanted those shares back without coughing up a single cent.
"Thanks for the offer, but nah. If you want the shares, here's the deal." Grace flashed her fingers.
Patrick narrowed his eyes. "No way."
Grace smirked, "Mr. Montgomery, you might wanna think that over. But hey, my time's precious. If you don't decide by today, I'm selling them off. Plenty of folks would jump at the chance."
Grace suddenly acted all surprised. "Oh, and I heard some big shot's in Skigeth. Bet he'd be interested in the Montgomery shares."
Grace dropped Sterling's name right when it mattered most.
She got up to leave, but then the office door swung open. The secretary trailed behind a flustered Kelly.
"Mr. Montgomery, Ms. Simmons insisted on coming in. I couldn't stop her," the secretary said.
Patrick waved her off.
Grace, seeing Kelly, turned to Patrick, "Ms. Simmons, perfect timing. I was just talking about you. By the way, Mr. Montgomery, I think..."
"Grace!" Kelly cut her off, "What are you doing here, bothering Dad? Get out!"
Grace stayed cool. "I wasn't done talking."
"Who do you think you are?" Kelly snapped.
Grace's eyes turned icy. "What did you just say?"
Kelly froze. Grace had dirt on her. Damn, Grace was using it to her advantage.
"I... just get out!" Kelly couldn't let Patrick catch on, so she shot Grace a look and shoved her.
Grace said, "Mr. Montgomery, think about what I said."
With that, Grace walked out of Patrick's office.
Kelly turned to her dad, "Dad, she wasn't causing trouble, was she? I heard she was here and got worried."
"What are you doing here?" Patrick glared. "Get out!"
Kelly had been scrambling for an excuse. Now, with Patrick telling her to leave, she was relieved. She didn't need to lie. She left his office and the Montgomery Group.
Downstairs, Grace got into her car but didn't drive off. She checked her phone and saw a message from Xavier.
Xavier: [Not done yet?]
Before meeting Patrick, Grace had talked to Xavier about selling the shares. Xavier had told her they were hers to deal with.
Grace: [It's done. Kelly showed up. She probably didn't come empty-handed.]
Xavier: [She won't make it easy. Watch out.]
Grace: [Got it.]
Meanwhile, Xavier got another message from Sterling.
Sterling: [You dragged me here just to stand outside the Montgomery Group?]
Xavier: [Patience.]
Sterling: [Xavier, I'm here cuz I lost that pool bet & owe u. U sure u wanna waste this favor here?]
Xavier had used this favor to have Sterling tail Grace. From the moment Grace went upstairs to when she came down, nothing had happened.
Xavier: [You're just a bodyguard now. Do your job and stop asking questions.]
Sterling went silent.
Man, Xavier was still a pain. Sterling was a big deal in Oakworth, and now he was stuck playing bodyguard for Grace.
If it wasn't for that promise to Xavier, he wouldn't be here. Sterling might be a jerk, but he always kept his word.
Sterling kept his eyes on Grace's car, which hadn't moved. Once he made sure she got home safe, he'd be done and free of Xavier's debt.
Soon, Kelly came down too. She spotted Grace's car and knew Grace was waiting. Kelly pointed to her phone and got into her own car.
Grace saw Kelly's message pop up.
Kelly: [You said if you got your mom's ashes, you'd keep my secret forever and get my parents to leave the Montgomery family for good.]
Grace: [I said it, and I mean it.] All she wanted were her mom's ashes.
Kelly: [Fine, I left your mom's ashes inside the Montgomery Group. Go get them yourself.]
Kelly sent a photo and a vague location. It was somewhere inside the Montgomery Group, but not exactly where.
Grace's heart sank. What was Kelly playing at?
Grace: [Kelly, is this a joke? You should hand them to me personally. How do I even know if it's really my mom's ashes?]
Kelly: [You can check once you get them. If it's fake, you can expose me. I was gonna give them to you myself, but since you went to see Patrick, I left them inside as a little punishment. Once you're in, I'll tell you the exact floor.]
Grace frowned. Why was Kelly making this so hard? Why not just hand them over? Something felt off.
Kelly: [What's the holdup? There are tons of people in the Montgomery Group. You think I'd try something? You still have my secret, don't you? You can control me easily.]
Grace: [I'm not going in.]
Kelly: [Suit yourself. The ashes are there. If you go in, I'll give you the exact spot. If not, that's on you.]
Basically, if Grace didn't go in, she'd never find them.
The Montgomery Group was huge, and it was their turf. She couldn't just send someone in to search blindly.
Grace: [Aren't you scared I'll go to Patrick now?]
Kelly: [If you do, I'll scatter the ashes. We can both go down together. You willing to risk it?]
Grace was stuck. She didn't know what to do. She thought of Xavier. He might have a plan.
Grace shot a message to Xavier, and he called back fast.
Xavier: [Got your earpiece in?]
Grace: [Yeah.]
She grabbed the wireless earpiece from her bag and popped it in.
Xavier said, "Good, stay on the line with me. Go up, don't worry. I got you."
Xavier's voice calmed her down. She got out of the car, shot a look at Kelly, and walked into the Montgomery Group building.
Kelly quickly texted Grace, saying the ashes were on the eighteenth floor.
Grace took the elevator up. Her heart was racing; she had a bad feeling about this.
