Chapter 313 Xavier: "I have a girlfriend now."
At that moment, Xavier's phone buzzed again.
Xavier glanced at it and said, "Gotta bounce, catch ya later."
He coldly hung up on Stephanie and picked up the new call, his tone shifting. "Still up this late?"
"Aren't you doing the same, Mr. Montgomery? So, who were you chatting with?" Grace's voice chimed in.
"Stephanie," Xavier replied without a second thought.
Grace chuckled, "Mr. Montgomery, you're brutally honest."
Xavier shrugged, "She called me. No point in hiding it. So, you got any secrets you're keeping from me?"
Grace laughed, "Nah, just checking in to see what you're up to."
"Working," Xavier said, fingers flying over the keyboard.
Grace could hear the clacking of keys. "Still grinding at this hour? You're a machine."
"How's stuff on your end?" Xavier asked.
"All good," Grace replied.
"The Montgomery family giving you any grief?" Xavier inquired.
Grace sighed, "They're too wrapped up in their own drama. You wouldn't believe it; Amy and Kelly's parents had a blowout. Kelly's dad ended up in the hospital. Total chaos."
Grace eagerly spilled the tea to Xavier, thinking Kelly would be quick to send Samuel and Julia packing, so she could get her hands on Evelyn's ashes.
Meanwhile, Stephanie was fuming after Xavier cut her off.
She slammed her bed and tried calling him again, but the line was busy.
She hung up and tried again later, still busy.
An hour later, she tried once more, still no luck.
Stephanie thought, 'Who the heck is Xavier talking to for so long?'
Knowing Xavier was at the office, she left the hospital.
She knew the DG Group like the back of her hand and could waltz into Xavier's office anytime.
It was late, and the place was pretty empty. Stephanie had always had free rein at DG Group. The security guards knew her well since she often brought them treats. They thought she might be Xavier's future wife, so they let her in without a fuss.
The DG Group was smack in the middle of the financial district, owning a whole building in this pricey area. The place was huge, fancy, and had a killer work environment. And that was just the HQ. In Oakworth alone, there were several branches, and even more in other cities.
Stephanie quickly reached the DG Group building entrance. She'd already ordered food for everyone burning the midnight oil.
She went all out, ordering the good stuff.
The employees were stoked, thanking Stephanie and calling her Mrs. Montgomery.
Hearing that, Stephanie couldn't stop grinning and even handed out extra red envelopes.
Xavier was busy upstairs, clueless about the scene downstairs.
Stephanie grabbed some food and headed up.
Xavier's office was on the top floor, where only he and Mason worked. The exec offices were one floor down.
Xavier was still on the phone with Grace, mostly listening and throwing in a word here and there.
Just then, there was a knock on the glass door. Xavier looked up and saw Stephanie standing there.
But Stephanie didn't wait for an invite and strolled right in. "Xavier, I knew you'd still be grinding."
"What are you doing here?" Xavier's face went ice-cold when he saw her.
Stephanie said, "You hung up on me so fast, I figured you were swamped. Thought you might not have eaten, so I brought some grub. Ordered for the night owls too. They even joked I'm a top-notch Mrs. Montgomery."
"Stephanie! Watch your words," Xavier snapped, glancing at his still-connected phone.
Stephanie shrugged, "What's wrong with that? They used to call me Mrs. Montgomery behind your back, and you never complained."
Grace heard Stephanie's voice through the phone. She thought, 'Stephanie's here late at night, calling herself Mrs. Montgomery? She's got so many options, why's she acting so desperate?'
Xavier said, "DG Group has a lady of the house, but it ain't you, Stephanie. You and I..."
"You should eat before it gets cold. Your stomach's not great," Stephanie cut him off.
She eyed Xavier's phone. Even though the screen was off, she knew the call was still live.
She deliberately said, "My grandpa's asking when you'll come over for dinner again. My uncle's birthday is coming up; how about I be your date? Why the face? We've known each other forever; we're besties. We've done all sorts of close stuff before, right?"
Worried Grace might get the wrong idea, Xavier picked up his phone and moved to the side. "I didn't know she'd just show up. Don't take her seriously."
Grace said, "I get it. She's doing it on purpose. I'll hang up; you deal with it. Call me when you're done!"
"Okay." Xavier quickly ended the call.
He turned to Stephanie. "Get out!"
Stephanie said, "I'm not leaving. Xavier, who were you talking to for so long?"
Xavier said, "That's none of your business, Stephanie. I have a girlfriend now, so you better watch your words and actions."
This hit Stephanie hard. "What... what did you say?"
Xavier actually admitted he had a girlfriend. Was it Grace?
For years, Xavier had kept every woman at arm's length—distant and cold, never getting too close to any of them.
Even though many women tried to get close to Xavier, Stephanie had always handled them for him. But now, Xavier admitted he had a girlfriend!
Stephanie's hand clenched, nails digging into her palm. She forced a smile. "Xavier, is this just your excuse rejecting me? Or are you just messing around? I know guys can be impulsive; I can forgive you."
