Chapter 435 Grace and I Fell in Love at First Sight
Grace's room was specially set aside by the Coleman family, and it was the best room in the house.
Originally, it was always reserved for Grace's mother, but now Grace was staying in it.
The room faced the street, and from the window, you could see the other side of the road.
Xavier's figure on the street was clearly visible under the streetlight.
Xavier was leaning against the streetlight pole in the night breeze, dressed lightly, seemingly holding a cigarette, the faint glow of the cigarette butt making his figure look lonely and desolate.
Perhaps sensing something, Xavier suddenly looked up directly in Grace's direction.
Grace didn't know if Xavier saw her, so she quickly hid and pulled the curtains shut.
Grace turned off the light, trying hard not to think about Xavier. She needed to sleep.
When she woke up, it would be New Year's Eve.
But lying in bed, Grace couldn't fall asleep. She didn't know if it was because of jet lag or because of Xavier.
Grace sat up in bed and glanced out the window; Xavier was still there.
Maybe the baby in her belly sensed something, too, as Grace felt a movement inside.
She was determined not to soften, but what did Xavier mean by what he said?
Xavier said he had liked her for a long time and that he wasn't lying when he said he liked her before. Now, she couldn't tell which of Xavier's words were true and which were false.
But she felt it was better for them not to have any entanglements.
Grace didn't fall asleep until almost dawn. The next day was New Year's Eve, and the Coleman Mansion was particularly lively.
A girl had come over, short but cute. When Grace went downstairs, she saw her clinging to Steven.
"Are you Grace?" The girl bounced over with a cute face and big eyes.
"Hello." Grace extended her hand.
She also extended her hand and shook Grace's: "Hi, I'm Bella Boleyn, Steven's fiancée!"
"Steven?" Grace looked over at Steven: "You didn't tell me your fiancée was underage?"
She really looked very young.
Hearing Grace's words, Bella laughed: "I'm almost thirty!"
Grace couldn't believe it. She looked like a high school student, yet she was almost thirty. It was really enviable!
"Steven and I grew up together. I'm mixed-race; my mom is from Country C," Bella introduced.
Grace said, "Then I should call you sister-in-law!"
Bella blushed and leaned into Grace's ear: "I'll tell you a secret. I've been chasing Steven for many years, but he never looks at me."
Before Bella could finish, Steven pulled her away and handed her a glass of milk: "Don't lead Grace astray."
"I'm not; I fell in love with Grace at first sight, though that might not be appropriate to say?"
Grace laughed and added, "It should be 'hit it off at first sight!'"
"Exactly!"
Steven looked at her and Grace, a small smile forming at the corner of his mouth.
Steven sat there reading while Grace and Bella whispered: "See, Steven is so cold."
"Not really, I don't think he dislikes you."
"Really? But he always liked to tease me since we were kids as if he hated me. I followed him around every day, and he said he was annoyed. Maybe it's because I always asked him for help. When I got into trouble, I didn't dare tell my parents, only Steven. He would solve it for me. When I was bullied, I only told him, and he would deal with those who bullied me."
"I don't know if it's because I was always causing trouble for him, but he must think I'm a troublemaker."
As an observer, Grace wondered if this was what liking someone looked like.
"Stop showing off your love!"
"I'm not; I'm just stating facts. Although our parents arranged our marriage, I feel Steven is not very willing."
Grace thought for a moment: "So you haven't gotten married because Steven is unwilling?"
Bella said: "Actually, I delayed it. I feel he doesn't like me, but he never opposes anything his family arranges. However, he has always been good to me, even indulging me in this matter."
Grace nodded: "He does indulge you quite a bit."
If someone else had said what Bella did, Grace wouldn't believe it was Steven. Steven never said unnecessary words or did meaningless things.
But Bella was very troubled. She had been chasing Steven for over twenty years, and Steven still didn't like her.
Bella kept talking about Steven. It was clear she really liked him; her eyes were full of him, and her words were all about him.
Grace thought Bella was really nice and very suitable for Steven.
They grew up together and were well-matched.
Grace also wondered, if Evelyn and Xavier's mother hadn't had an accident, and Xavier hadn't left Skigeth, what would she and Xavier be like now?
Would they have already been married, or would they not have fallen for each other at all?
"Grace, Grace!"
Bella called out to Grace, bringing her back to reality: "What's wrong? What were you thinking about?"
"Nothing, just envying you and Steven growing up together."
"Right? I'm very lucky to have met him in this vast world. Even though he doesn't like me, I like him, and that's enough. Being his fiancée already makes me luckier than many who have unrequited love!"
Grace sincerely wished Steven and Bella well, and she thought Bella was really great, with a wonderful personality.
They talked a lot, and Bella asked Grace many things about Country C.
Today's New Year's Eve was particularly lively. The family stayed up until almost midnight. Steven took Bella home, Thomas went somewhere, and Scott seemed drunk, lying there.
Grace also called Angela. She felt a bit guilty for not spending New Year's Eve with Angela this year.
They wished each other a happy new year and chatted for a while before hanging up.
It was now 11:30 PM, almost the new year.
Grace's heart suddenly fluttered. Thinking of something, she went upstairs to her room and saw Xavier hiding outside, with only half his shoulder visible.
Xavier stood behind a big tree, quietly, seemingly not intending to disturb.
He knew it was New Year's Eve, a time for family reunions. The Coleman Mansion was very lively; he could hear it from outside.
He missed Grace very much but didn't want to disturb her at this time.
He had been spending New Year's Eve alone for many years, usually working at the company. It made no difference to him.
This year seemed luckier than previous ones. At least, he could be so close to Grace.
