Chapter 058 A Bunch of Despicable People
After Zach was taken away, Madison upstairs was too scared to make a sound. She had thought Grace foolish, but the truth, Madison was the one who was foolish. She quickly turned to Taylor. "Mom, what do we do now? Dad's been arrested, but we can't just sit back and let Grace get away with this, can we?"
Taylor had seen everything unfold, but she hadn't expected Zach to fail at such a simple task and be outwitted by Grace. "Grace is a little witch!" cursed Taylor.
"Mom, let's go to the Montgomerys, okay? I'll tell Wendy every detail. With the Montgomerys' influence, they can surely get Dad out," Madison suggested, believing herself to be Zach's loving daughter. Surely, he would thank her if he were released.
"Don't you dare!" Taylor snapped at her naive daughter. "This matter was never supposed to reach the Montgomerys' ears."
Although Taylor didn't like the idea of Grace marrying into the Montgomery family's fortune, she knew that if the Montgomerys found out about this, it could affect the Lewis family as well.
Taylor mused to herself, "Zach's such a fool; how did I ever fall for him? People, especially women, must look out for themselves. It seems I can't rely on Zach anymore."
Just then, Taylor's phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and her eyes shifted subtly at the sight of the name displayed. "Go to bed now. Leave this matter to me, I'll find a way to get your father out," she instructed.
"Okay," Madison replied, retreating to her room.
Meanwhile, Taylor quickly took her phone and returned to the bedroom she shared with Zach.
She finally answered the phone, her voice becoming soft and enchanting, "Hello, Daniel."
"Of course, I miss you. I miss you so much. I miss everything about you. Daniel, do you miss me?" Taylor flirted.
Meanwhile, Grace went to the police station with them and gave her statement.
Zach was already in custody, but he still showed no remorse, believing he had done nothing wrong. He kept cursing Grace.
Soon after, Tom was dragged in. He had been out with Laura, but as a prominent figure, she chose to hide as soon as Tom was apprehended, and it took her some time to follow to the police station.
Seeing Grace, Tom shared the same furious look as Zach. He looked like he wished he could kill Grace then and there.
But Tom's hands were cuffed, so there was nothing he could do.
When Zach was brought in as well, Tom lashed out, "Zach, for heaven's sake, what kind of job have you done? I paid you a heap of money. Didn't you promise to take care of this for me?"
"Mr. Reed, calm down. Grace just wouldn't listen to any of my reasons, all my pleading did nothing. Look, she's gone mad and had me arrested," Zach lamented, trying to quell Tom's anger.
Tom stated, "I gave you money, Zach."
Zach replied, "Mr. Reed, don't worry, I'll handle it."
Tom felt incredibly frustrated. Why was he being run ragged by this young woman? What enraged Tom even more was that Kelly was no longer answering his calls. She had previously agreed to help connect Tom with the Montgomery Group, so he had bought into her lie.
Unbeknownst to Tom, Kelly was now in a bind herself.
If Grace had only approached Kelly with Tom's video, it wouldn't have caused much of a stir. The most he could do was vent his anger on Kelly.
But Grace was clever; she made the most of the situation by showing the video to Patrick.
Patrick's approach was quite different. Even though Kelly had fled that night, she didn't get far before Patrick caught her, leaving her with no chance to take Tom's call.
Grace cooperated throughout the investigation. By the time she finished her statement and left the police station, it was the break of dawn.
Just outside the station, someone approached her. “Ms. Lewis, Mrs. Reed would like a word with you.”
“I don’t think I know of Mrs. Reed. If she has something to say, she should come forward in the open. We can talk at the police station, where there'll be witnesses. What if this private meeting is a setup to kill me?" Grace declared.
She wasn't about to meet without taking precautions.
"Ms. Lewis, I hope you won't scorn a well-meant gesture," said the person who had come for Grace, running out of patience.
Grace was attempting to scoot past the man when he reached out to block her path. She looked up at him, then over to the black car parked behind him. "What, are you planning to make a scene right outside the police station? You didn't even bother to cover the plates, afraid that someone wouldn't recognize that it's the Yule family's car?"
She spoke deliberately toward the vehicle, "If something were to happen to me right here, would the Yule family bear some responsibility?"
Sure enough, it didn't take long before the car door swung open. A woman stepped out; it was Laura, Tom's wife.
"Grace, I want to talk with you," Laura said, an air of wealth and assertiveness about her, her gaze piercing.
Grace proposed, "There's a 24-hour coffee shop over there. Mrs. Reed, if you don't mind, we can talk there."
"Do you know who I am?" Laura challenged.
Grace just smiled, answered, "Mrs. Reed, with your booming career, who wouldn't?"
Both sharp minds, they understood each other very well.
At the coffee shop, Laura was direct. "Let's get to the point. You're suing my husband because you want more money, right? Just tell me how much, and I can give it to you."
To Laura, money seemed a viable solution to suppress the issue. Tom was known for playing around, and once got another woman pregnant, all tidily handled by Laura. She believed with enough money; it seems any issue could be taken care of.
Few people could withstand Laura's intense gaze. Yet Grace looked calmly into Laura's eyes. "So, Mrs. Reed, do you think if the roles were reversed, you could solve it with money?"
"I know my husband is at fault, but it was a momentary lapse. I assure you he won't do it again. Ms. Lewis, isn't it a humane thing to forgive?" Laura said, trying to make Grace feel guilty.
"I thought my grievances with Mr. Reed were settled, but since he harbors resentment and aims to retaliate, how can I be sure he won't come after me again? Besides, justice is always fair. If Mr. Reed is indeed innocent, no judge would wrong a good person," Grace answered, firmly.
Laura's expression soured. "So, you're set on suing him no matter what?"
"Not everything can be resolved with money, and not everyone is afraid of you, to be coerced into submission," Grace responded firmly. "We are adults and should be accountable for our actions."
